Silly question about what type of food can travel well on a plane...

I hope this is in the right spot ;)

Last summer DF and I took crackers in our suitcase on the plane... the kind with peanut butter in the middle, etc... and honestly, neither of us really like them, so the effort to save money didn't help at all because we didn't eat them and spent money on other snacks! :confused3

SO... what other types of snacks could I carry in a suitcase on a plane? Would chocolate melt? Pop tarts?

TIA :thumbsup2

For safety reasons, you might not be allowed to bring snacks that have nuts in them as some passengers might have an allergy.

Chocolate doesn't travel well at all which is a shame! Doritos (the snack sizes) leave you with "Doritos breath" for the rest of the flight so that's not a good choice either. Same is true with potato chips.

I like granola bars, they are surprizingly filling and come individually wrapped. You can also get snack size cookies like Chip Ahoy and Oreos.

They will not stop you from bring nuts/nut products on the plane; however, they may ask that you not consume them onboard, due to an allergy.

An exception to this would be peanut butter, as it is considered a liquid/gel. You can bring a pbj sandwich (already made), but cannot bring the individual components to make the sandwich on the plane, except for the bread.

Any non-gel/paste/liquid food can be brought through security. Any such nonperishable food can travel safely for hours. ANY food can be brought on the plane.

Therefore, any food you like that meets the above conditions... ;)

Thank you! I wasn't planning on eating the snacks on the plane, so I must of been unclear for other PP - I'm sorry! We like to pack snacks to eat while on our vacation - things we can take into the park in a backpack or something...

Our flight is only 1 hour and 45 minutes, so it's good that acceptable nonperishable food can travel safely for hours.

Thank you so much for your help!

I am traveling with a group of friends this year. We are bringing along the 100 calorie snacks and crystal lite to go. The oreo thin crisps and the lorna doones are my favorite.

Pringles can go. Just about anything. I wouldn't pack fruit or something like that, but what you like can go with you. Be mindful that it might get crushed so pack accordingly if it might be crushed. Also, bags, such as potato chips or doritos, that type of thing may burst because of the pressure.

Here's a question - on the subject of bursting.

I was thinking of packing some of those Horizon Milk individual cartons - the ones that don't need to be refrigerated. Do you think they'll bust in my checked luggage?

I plan to bring snacks too - so this is an interesting subject - not silly at all!

They might, they might not. If you do choose to pack liquids* in your checked luggage, please double- or triple-protect them. Place inside zip-top bag, zip. Place that inside another zipper bag, zip. Place it all in a sturdy, resealable plastic container (e.g. Rubbermaid, Tupperware, etc.). Wrap well. Place in middle of suitcase, surrounded by fabric such as clothing.

*Please consider not packing any liquid, but especially one with the potential to damage other passengers' belongings, either by stains or odors.

I used to take water bottles and freeze them. Then the morning of the flight fill a soft sided large cooler with the water bottles to keep my food cold. Food has included : frozen lunch meat/cheese/broccoli/milk in sealable containors/broccoli/feta/hard boilded eggs (peeled)/anything in my fridge.

Last trip my husband made me get the meal plan.

I am traveling with two other friends this year. We are getting the dining package, which has the unlimited soda package. We are each bringing a bottle of alcohol to set up a little bar in our room; you place it in a ziplock bag and then a bubble wrap envelope and it will be okay. I haven't lost a bottle yet.

I also take a jar of peanut butter and a spoon; I always laugh when I think of my baggage going through the screening process. Some guy in a back room somewhere is having a pretty good laugh about seeing my bag go by with a spoon and a jar of peanut butter.

On a not so funny note, one Thanksgiving I was in line near a woman that was bringing three of her famous homemade pecan pies to her son - they were confiscated because they were "gel." Boy, was she hot; she accused the TSA of just wanting to get some homemade pie for having to work over the holiday...

FWIW, there's a new (to me, at least) pack of PB, I think it's something like Justin's brand, that is a 2 oz size. Just in case we had delays, I brought a couple of those in our quart size baggies (to eat in the airport, NOT in the plane, I'm not bringing peanuty snacks to eat ON the plane anymore after last month's epic thread) along with some half oz things of jelly, and then simple crackers. NO one cared that it was PB, they just cared that it was in the right sized packet and in my baggie.

OP, as a "just in case" measure, along with the above, I actually had a carryon filled with food. :) DS can't have a common ingredient in today's food, and I can't always know if something is safe for him, so we brought our safe brand of bread, crackers, some cookies...just all sorts ot things. I think I also brought bagels! :)
