Sick kid 3 days before cruise -- HELP

Thanks, he is doing much better. Yes, they were and yes they are!! He got bit over 20 times on one foot, five or so on the other and then on his hands when he wiped them off. He was at camp when it happened and I was not at all prepared for what he looked like when I got to him.

Oh
agggggggghhhhhhhhhh!
I'm so glad your son is better and that sounds really horrible what he went thru!
I'm kinda freaking out here though- I didn't need to hear that when my son went to Boy Scouts camp yesterday (first time camping without us) and I'm really concerned he won't put on sunscreen, won't put on bugspray, etc. The troop leader (new troop he's in- now that he's crossed from cubscout to boyscouts DH is no longer the "den leader") was all we don't remind the boys- they are big boys now blah blah blah and I'm thinking well yeah.... but he's an 11yr old boy and this is the first time camping without us there to remind him of everything!

I figure if he comes home not sunburned, not covered in bugbites, no broken bones, and not dehydrated we'll count ourselves lucky. But we have a lot of fire ants here in Texas. I'm going to pretend I didn't read this so I won't have nightmares tonight of that happening to my son --right now--- where I can't do anything about it (and he won't be home till Saturday!) ahhhhhh I had no idea the ants could cause a reaction like that! That had to be so scary for him to react like that to it. I"m so glad your son is okay!

pixiedust:If it is a virus that will run it's road in 24 hours then you are okay; because you still are within the 24 hr no fever no GI distress.

The question from CMs at check-in is "Have you or anyone in your party had any vomitting or diarrhea in the last 72 hours?" However, since the swine flu, CMs no longer ask this question, but instead have guests fill out a public health questionairre (one per stateroom). If you answer yes to either of the two questions on the form (which now includes symptoms such as runny nose and coughing), then the ship's nurse or doctor is called into the terminal to evaluate the guest for seaworthiness. Not only does Disney want to keep the whole ship healthy, they also don't want the guest exhibiting symptoms to get worse while they are out in the middle of the ocean!

geesh! my ds's nose has been running just about every day since he was born! and the crazy part is that he doesn't even go to daycare!

He had a horrible allergic reaction to red ant bites last week, that ended him in the hospital. His entire body swelled and his throat started closing. His foot, where he was bit was so swollen that he didn't have any blood flowing to it. He has been wheezing and coughing since then even on the steroids, so we are heading back tomorrow. But I am nervous with so many of the kids sick at camp that he will pick something up being on the steroids.

YIKES!! :scared1: I'm so sorry for him! What you are describing sounds like an anaphylatic reaction. My son has suffered with that three times in his life (food allergy, shot reaction, and wasp sting). Did your MD say anything about him carrying an epi-pen?

Anyhow, while I wouldn't want to torture the child (don't know how old or how fragile) dose up the child with whatever medication he/she needs...hide him/her in port as best as possible....and get on the ship.

That just seems soooooo dishonest to me.

I mean, I feel for the OP, though not to sound nasty, as someone mentioned before they gambled with insurance and lost.....let that be a lesson to the rest of us here.

But, to say point blank to hide the child in the terminal, I don't feel is the right thing to do.

Where is the original poster? What did the doctor say yesterday?

Yes..... Where is the OP. We have had a couple of other people chime in with things going on with them, but I am checking in to see how her DF's son came out.... What did the doctor say?:confused3

Yike! Do they seriously ask if you have had a runny nose or cough in the past 72 hours? We would never be able to get on the ship. DS and I both suffer from allergies and asthma, so we are frequently battling a runny nose and/or mild coughs, but it is not from an illness.

I hope the child in question is feeling better.

My son has allergies and runny nose just happens to one of the symptons. I don't like the idea of a ship's nurse or doctor deciding our vacation fate on minor symptons such as colds. Fevers I can understand but not just a cold.

ps...i hope the OP son's is better. I feel for them and completly understand!!!

Hi All! I'm the OP. My Friend (Mom of the sick child) lives in another State and I was waiting for info...
The Doctor diagnosed him with Strep-throat - The kid has been in amoxicilin from the minute he got to the Ped and thankfully fever free since last nigth - Based on the doctor's assesment, non contagious by tomorrow - The doctor gave him the OK to go anboard on Thurs as he would have been on antibiotics for about 72 hours
...But still his Mom is "wait and see how he feels" to go to the cruise....

Thanks for all the advise and well wishes. My DH, DD and I are definitively going... we really hope our friends come with us, since we always have a great time with them....

A suggestion for ALL, including OP. If you or a member of your party has a medical situation that is either treated and determined to be not contagious or a chronic situation such as allergies, bring a note from your doctor with you.

Don't offer it up unless you need to, but have it "just in case." Answer all questions honestly, but do not offer information that could get you in trouble. Do not try to hide a sick member of your party--that's not going to be good for you, the sick individual, or your fellow cruisers.

The powers that be are going to be a lot more responsive to a "seasonal allergies" note from the doc than they are from your mouth.

KCashner, you read our minds! my friend and I spoke about that. We are going to take all the documentation from the doctor (given she decides to do the trip after all)

We are definitively -- NOT -- Lying or hiding anything, as you should not do to other what you wouldn't like others to do to you.... I'm a veteran cruiser (just this second with DCL but multiple ones with existing and long-gone cruiselines) and the worst thing that can happen to you is to be sick in a cruise... specially if you are 3yo... just second after knowing that other people got sick and didn't enjoy their cruise and it is all your fault.

I thank all for the advise and the shared experiences from others... I just wanted to know what our options were (without having to read the boring and complicated text in the DCL contract.) I know the "official" answer is there, but if you see my other post about costume's pirate props... I know the letter and the facts are some times different.

Also, THANK YOU!!! atinkerbellmom!!! I think your pixie dust may be working well for us :cheer2:

mmackeymouse -- I whole-heartedly agree with your assessment. Dishonest and not considerate of others with children onboard that may get sick due to "hiding a sick child" and ruin other families vacations. That mentality happens in schools and daycares everyday and as a parent it is very frustrating.

On a lighter note, glad OP found out it was strep and got antibiotics. No need for anyone to worry at that point. 24-hours on antibiotics and you are no longer contagious!! Happy cruising OP!

So glad he is feeling better. I have to say that two of my children had "the flu" probably swine per the pedi and there is no way they would have been capable of standing in line or even being upright for a long period of time. The problem is going to come in where they get sick on board. I can tell you from experience that my son was perfectly fine the day before he got sick and then he was violently ill 3 hours from the first symptom (headache). I have no idea how they are going to keep it all under control. Only two in my household got it because I am a germaphobe...lol.
