Show me your garden!

Last night I picked five pounds of cucumbers. This morning, 6.4 pounds! I have picked 24 in less than 12 hours. We have had lots of rain, and this year we propped them up off the ground with tomato cages. I think that is helping a lot. I am going to have to make refrigerator pickles tonight.

I wish some of our other stuff was producing. I should be able to pick green salad bowl lettuce tonight for dinner. I think our radishes are done. The zuchinni has beautiful blossoms but no fruit. All the bees are in the cucumbers. Next year I will have the bee friend wildflowers planted first to bring them all in. My peas and beans are sad. My melons plants are two inches tall. Boo.

Here are this morning’s pretties. 7CCDA717-406A-415F-875E-BF0383638A18.jpeg

Does anyone have a refrigerator pickle recipe they love? I’m not in the mood the make traditional pickles and I still have about 15 jars left from my last marathon session.

I use this classic recipe from pickyourown. Depending on the size of the cukes I do them whole or in spears. I also do at least one jar of slices for sandwiches. http://pickyourown.org/pickles_easy.htm

My pickles are always crisp. We're just finishing up the last jar from last summer!

Would you share your recipes? Those both sound really good!

Refrigerator Pickled Peppers

It's 1cup vinegar, 1 cup filtered water, 4 tbsp sugar, 2tbsp pickling/canning salt.

Boil, add to peppers, let sit for 10-15 mins. Stuff jars, put lids and rings on, allow to cool to room temperature, and refrigerate.

Thanks for the recipes everyone. Last night I made three quarts and one half gallon of the garlicy dill cold pickles. I’ll do sweet next.

My zuchinni has big blossoms that are just falling off. My plants are huge. Does anyone know why I don’t have any zuchinni?

There are male zucchini flowers and female zucchini flowers :) You need both types for the female flowers to pollinate. The female flowers are the ones with a bulge at the base that looks like a teeny zucchini. Do you have that type yet? One year I only got male flowers from one of my plants which really ticked me off lol

If you have both types of flowers but no zucchini, you can pollinate the female flowers with a small paintbrush. Swirl the paintbrush around the single stamen inside the male flower, then transfer the pollen onto the stigma inside the female flower. You can also hand-pollinate by snapping the stamen off the male flower and rubbing it inside the female flower.

I will do that this evening, thanks! I guess all the bees in the cucumbers are happy and don’t want to fly six feet to my zuchinni bed.

In 12 Days we have picked over 45 pounds of cucumbers. I’ve made pickles and we eat them for about every meal lol

I have five zuchinni growing. My plants were full of male flowers, I had no clue. I have 12ish beautiful plants out there so hopefully I’ll get tons of veggies once the female flowers decide to make their appearance.

We have two tomatoes that are yellow. I can’t wait for the first red, takes the skin off the roof of your mouth acidic tomato!

How are your gardens doing?

Almost done with the lettuce and spinach (zone 6b/7a here). I think we're a few days away from ripe cherry tomatoes and much longer for the other tomatoes. Jalapeños are the first of the peppers ready to start picking. I picked the third picking of rhubarb last week and I should get another picking to add to the freezer stash. have 2 3" zucchini growing on 2 plants. My goal is to eat zucchini for several weeks until we go to WDW (late July) before the blasted squash vine borers kill the plants. I'll pull the plants right before we leave and replant after.

Cukes are just setting fruit. No pole green beans. yet.

I have nothing so far except a few strawberries here and there. Lots of different things growing, but going to be a while before anything is ready. I went on vacation at the end of May so it pushed back my planting later than usual. Tomatoes and peppers are coming in good. I planted a few small raspberry vines a year or two ago and those have taken off this year. My squash and cuke plants are tiny, they usually do well eventually.
