An automatic weapon doesn't kill people. It's the person pulling the trigger that does. This guy could have had any type gun and pull this off.

Yes, you are right, but he might not have been able to pull it off with a knife. I feel sorry for everyone including the guy who did the shootings, but it's the gun culture that is the problem. You tell me how you could pull the same thing off without a gun and I'll sign to keep guns legal.

Okay, are you talking a bomb? Gosh, let me think, how many of you know how to make a bomb that effective? Hmmmmm. You know, the sad fact is that no matter how strongly you want to defend your gun laws, the rest of the world has this perception that you are trigger happy/gun happy, and at risk of being very controversial, you are reaping what you have sowed.
Very very very sad, and because of pride and frankly arrogance I can't ever see the US changing its stance on this.

You are missing the point (i'm just quoting your's as an example). .. this is a college-aged kid... not a terrorist. He doesn't have access to terrorist supplies/equipment planning. It's a KID for pete's sake. Is it me, or is everyone wearing blinkers??

Yup, we have a lot of those fertiliser bombs over here. I forgot. Oh hang on, he's a man, .. so it was men and women he shot, and not college kids?

Spontaneous killings are MUCH easier with a gun as opposed to ... oh, let's kill someone today - i know I'll make a fertiliser bomb.

What is it that a lot of people in the US think the rest of us have to gain by suggesting that your gun laws are questionable? It's because we see this time and time again and yet nothing changes.

Did anyone else think it was a little too soon for a memorial service the day after (when there are kids ... men/women ... in hospital who may yet lose their battles for life).

My impression is that the lesson learned from Columbine was how to put in place plans for a very quick memorial service if another massacre arrives.

The Rwandan Genocide was mostly carried out by Machetes. While there was guns and grenades, it was the machetes that did most of the estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 deaths.

Yes, these were not kids killed, these were men and woman he killed. My college age children are children in my eyes only. Everyone else sees them as young men and women.

This was no spur of the moment "i think i will go postal" decision. This was a well thought out and premeditated action. My belief is it started over 36 days ago in the planning. Had he not gotten a gun, he would have made other choices to reek the havoc and destruction he did. He had a mission and would have followed it through to his own death, which he did.

It just seems that so many of you are missing the overall point, and I can't tell whether it's deliberate - that you don't want to back-pedal on your views for one reason or another - or if you are simply too myopic to see the grand picture beyond these shootings... the picture that the rest of the world seems to see. Maybe you are all so close to the culture that you can't see the overall picture - and it's not a criticism but more of an observation on my part.

Thanks, did not catch that on the news. I just surmise it would take a bit to file the serial numbers off 2 guns, get chains and locks for the doors, and know enough to not carry an ID on you and shoot yourself so you are not easily recognized. This guy had it all planned out weeks ago.

Hmmm for someone who isn't wearing blinkers, you might want to look into a few things. Seung-Hui was only 4 years younger Timothy McVeigh, who was a terrorist, had access to supplies and did blow up a building.

Frankly do not care what the rest of the worlds opinions are on our gun laws.

My opinion only: We need less government in our lives not more.

BUt, again my opinion only, this is not the thread for this debate. This is about the victims of the VA Tech killings.

Or it could be that we know, know matter what if someone is this unstable they will find a way to do what they want. Be it shooting up a school, bombing a building, subway or what ever target they pick. It's going to happen.
