Shooting at Va Tech

I have a question (excuse my ignorance as I know nothing about buying weapons). I thought I heard the shooter was here legally on a VISA. If true, how does that qualify for the purchase of a gun...shouldn't you have to be a citizen?

Per CNN:

No visa, he had a green card. Which made it legal for him to purchase guns in VA. He bought the guns legally and had a full state and federal background check.

He showed his green card which showed him as a legal citizen, his check book which showed an address, and I want to say a DL which confirmed the address on the check book. He then paid for everything with a credit card. Now this is only for the glock that was used. I haven't heard where or how he got the other gun.

I live in Virginia, and have many colleagues who teach with me who are alumni of VT, and they are urging everyone, to NOT give any money to any organization who is offering to collect donations on behalf of the families. There are many people out there who will take advantage of the good intentions of all those good hearted people who would love to help in any way that they can. Unfortunately, the VT families will likely not see any of the money that you send to these types of groups. If you are wishing to make donations to these families, try to send it directly to VT Alumni Association and make sure they are aware that the money is to go to the families of those killed, or you could send it directly to the school itself, they will find a way to help.

The crack pots are out and trying to dupe the innocent!!!

Anyway...I feel terrible. This is absolutely terrifying for everyone...especially for those of us who send kids off to school. I pray for all those poor kids and their families and I wish God speed to those we have lost!!

Apparently, unless I heard wrong, all he needed in VA was his INA card, drivers license, and a credit card. Instant check came up clean, bingo, he could buy the gun and all the ammo he wanted.

I posted a link to the fund the school has set up.

:thumbsup2 ..and the fed/state clearance took all of 4 minutes!:sad2: It shouldnt be sooooooooo easy!
Also the Ammo shop that sold him it (all legally) has sold 5 other guns that were used to murder people.

The NYC police department went undercover to this shop and filmed just how easy it is to get one. Most all illegal violent gun crimes in NYC are committed from guns purchased legally in VA!

Thanks. I used the school's spirit fund.

I'm still in such shock. It's such a shame. Thanks for the link.

Thank you!!! I was looking for it and you found it first!!! I'm glad that people want to help. Here, everyone is still walking around in a state of disbelief. My school where I teach, we have many teachers who are alumni and now have their own children there, and I have only seen this kind of raw emotion two other times and that was Columbine and 9/11. We had teachers panicking trying to reach their children. My school is still just shaken by all of this. I live here at William & Mary and we are all so aware that it could have happened here.

I attend another Tech campus in TN and it was odd on campus to say the least. I found it through that facebook group. I don't know if my school is doing anything visual vise but on the front page of our website it has the black ribbon with the saying today we are hoakies.

I would agree with this. If you wish to give, choose an established and official fund or charity.

I think that's really cool. And thanks to whoever I just stole my avatar from.

Where did you get that fact from? According to the Brady Campaign, it's not only VA being problematic. It's a national problem : http://www.bradycampaign.org/xshare/pdf/research/AGS-delears.pdf and for more info: http://www.bradycampaign.org/action/trafficking

Anyway, thanks for the link to the school fund... :guilty:

Yup, we have a lot of those fertiliser bombs over here. I forgot. Oh hang on, he's a man, .. so it was men and women he shot, and not college kids?

Spontaneous killings are MUCH easier with a gun as opposed to ... oh, let's kill someone today - i know I'll make a fertiliser bomb.

What is it that a lot of people in the US think the rest of us have to gain by suggesting that your gun laws are questionable? It's because we see this time and time again and yet nothing changes.
Isn't it great when people overseas wag their fingers at the US when something like this happens and says it's because of the US's "gun laws" or its "cowboy culture"?

Hello? Dunblane? The Johann Gutenberg school in Germany? Dawson College in Canada? The Aramoana massacre in New Zealand? etc., etc., etc. Believe me, we have far from cornered the market on this type of mass murder.

Want to do away with guns?... Fine, how about the 2004 High school attack in Ruzhou, China that left 8 students dead? Google "UK school knife attack" and see page after page of stories about fatal UK school knifings. I don't see people wagging their fingers about the lax "knife laws" in the UK and going on about the "Jack The Ripper Culture". (Ooops, I take that back here's one!)

On more thing... The VT shooter bought the gun last month and there appears to be mounting evidence that this wasn't a "spontaneous" plan.

And as for poo-pooing the notion that a bomb might be deployed in this sort of madness... The largest mass murder at a US school still was due to a home-made bomb in 1927!

Absolutely mind boggling! In 4 years 55,000 guns sold in shops which were later used to commit a crime. The time has come. Stop the saturation of our communities with guns!
