Shooting at Va Tech

Now we just have to wait til August to see if it's going to be Virginia Hope or Bruce Smith or how about Frank Beamer, you don't run across many Franks these days.

We just got back from a memorial service done by our alumni chapter. It was sad but felt good to be with fellow hokies and cry and pray for hope. I have always joked about if I had a girl naming her after my grandmother, Virginia, and of course the middle name would be Tech. Today when we were releasing 32 balloons the name Virginia Hope came to me. What do you think?

Sounds GREAT to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Course, I'm biased......I went to Va Tech AND am named Virginia. But, still , I  it and I'm sure she would too.:cloud9:

GO HOKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We went up to VT on Saturday. Very nice day. Saw the memorials, did our hands for the art project (a large "poster" of hand prints--I think they said it was going to be in Burruss.), went to the Chapel and walked by Norris.

They had a picnic on the Drill Field and had A TON of food there, it was all free. That was very nice.

I think going up really helped DH feel better. (He is an alumni) We took some flowers and the kids decided to put them at the War Memorial.

There was a sign on Burruss saying "DIS loves VT" (or something like that). Anyone here put that up? I didn't get a close look at it.

Someone had chalk outside of Burruss and people were making sidewalk drawings and messages. DS did a large VT and DD drew a stick figure crying and said "We are all sad". I think it was good for them too.

We didn't get to see the girls SB team playing b/c the ended the game early due to the slaughter rule. However, DD did get their autographs on the back of a t-shirt.

We got some very cool free t-shirts. They say "We are Virginia Tech" on the front and "We Will Prevail" on the back and the sleve has a black circle w/ VT and "we remember" and 4-16-07 on it. Unfortunately, when we got there, they only had mediums left and there is no way DH could wear that. He was really disappointed, but was glad the rest of us got one. If anyone ever sees one like this in XL or 2XL (or even a large)...we have a medium we would trade for it!

I hope all the students going back today do O.K. Good luck to all of them!

In one of the articles I was reading, this cracked me up!

After a few chants of "Let's Go, Hokies," they headed off to class, where Provost Mark McNamee reported at least one sign of normalcy: "The same students who sit in the last row are still nodding off in class."

And as the mother of an incoming Class of 2011 VA Tech student,

The rampage does not appear to be having an impact on prospective students, who must decide by May 1 whether they will enroll this fall. Admission has been offered to 12,848 new students, school spokesman Larry Hincker said. As of Monday, only five had declined to enroll because of the shootings.

Yesterday & today I couldn't help but watch the clock & think...this time last week..... I am inspired by the students that returned to classes on campus today. Whether they are doing actual academics in classes is irrelevant. The fact that they are there speaks volumes. I have always said that our kids won't be going to VT...we would probably be out of state at the time...and they can get a great education anywhere. I have cheered for the Hokies football team ever since meeting DH in 1994 and proudly worn the colors and flown the flag outside our house during the football season. Last Tuesday morning I put it up on the flagpole. The past week has made those bonds with VT deeper. Now I think that having the kids graduate from VT as the 4th generation in DH's family would be a wonderful thing. :)

welovedisneyx4, it sounds like a great day. Dh and I need to get down there soon. Our boys 4 and 6 are Hokies through and through, and we've been talking about taking them down and showing them around for a while now. Unfortunatly we have this little Disney trip that we have to do first. I've really got to start packing for that.

When we went to the memorial on Sunday the pastor was a VT alumni. He said "most of you like me did not know the victims personally, but we knew them better than we think. He are all Hokies. We attended classes in the same buildings, skipped the same lectures, floated down the same river and probably even tipped the same cows." It was cute and true. Virginia Tech has changed alot since we were there, the football team was trying to prove that they belonged on the main stage and now they have arrived. But after the past week it appears that the true spirit of being a Hokie is still the same.

Lisa, you can come live mith us their senior year in HS, and then get in-state tuition....:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Actually, they have a much better chance of admission from out of state. So many kids from Fairfax County (right outside Wash DC) apply that it is very hard to get in.....

One of Daniel's friends had 1300 SAT and a 4.0 average and was wait listed because he did not have many extra items and he never took an AP class.

He will find out on June 1st, if he will be admitted.

:lmao: Actually, my ILs live an hour from VT. I am sure they wouldn't mind us taking over their electric bill so that we could have a residence in VA. ;) NO! I wouldn't do that...but DS could go live with them while in college. He will turn 19 his freshman year so maybe something could be arranged? Who knows where we will be in 10 years. :confused3

I'm looking through one of my facebook groups and some of the pictures of what other schools have done for VT is amazing. Penn state formed the VT logo in the crowd.

Does anyone else have anything to say on this.....

I hope the kids at VT are getting back to normal......exams start very soon...
Can you imagine going to sit for an exam now in Blacksburg.....

The kids on TV really did VT proud...they were so well spoken and calm.

The two kids from Westfield HS (where my son goes) we buried this week. Reema was buried on Monday and Erin Peterson on Tuesday. The Limos on Tuesday were all over Centreville....

I am so sad for all the families,

Jarrett Lane, a civil engineering major from Narrows, Va., was in Dr. G.V. Loganathan's classroom in Norris Hall when he was shot and killed. A senior and recipient of a special scholarship for engineering students, he had just celebrated his 22nd birthday in March.

His former teachers at Narrows High School spoke of him today in glowing terms, remembering him as a talented student, four-sport athlete, and valedictorian.

"He was an exceptional young man," said the school principal, Robert Stump. "Very quiet and humble, and very popular."

Mr. Stump said the small school of 330 students and the close-knit community of Narrows, which is 25 miles west of Blacksburg, was in shock over Mr. Lane's death.

"He was always one of the hardest workers," Mr. Stump said. "One time, after he'd had a good basketball game, he went up to the coach, and said, 'Coach, what do I have to work on so that we can be better. '"

Here is a wonderful story of Gods Grace to share with your congregation. Please share it as you see fit. This is Mark Cox, (Gay's Son, and Wanda's Brother).

This story will get no press in the main stream media. It's a story a little too religious. It's a story that might be a little too politically incorrect in certain editor's boardrooms; nonetheless it's a story that must be heard. It must be told.

On Sunday morning on April the 15th 2007, Jarret Lane was attending services at the First Baptist Church of Narrows, Virginia. It might have been a Sunday service like any other Sunday morning service: Sunday School followed by opening comments followed by Praise and Worship, followed by the Sunday sermon, followed by an altar call, followed by the benediction and dismissal.

But on this particular Sunday, during the altar call Jarrett Lane responded to a stirring, to a still small voice in his heart telling him to go forward. He stepped out of his seat, walked down the aisle to the front of the small Church and prayed with the pastor to receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

Jarret Lane had doubtless heard many times in his lifetime the admonition "this might be your last opportunity to accept Christ." It might have been easy to override the still small voice and leave for Sunday lunch, but instead he listened, No! He heard. He heeded. He obtained forgiveness. He experienced the Love and Grace of the Son of God. It was a glorious day for Jarrett.

Less than 24 hours later Jarret Lane was killed along with 31 other innocent victims by depraved and angry shooter Cho Seung-Hui on the campus of Virginia tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.

At my place of employment, the news of Jarrett's salvation came to me via E-mail. With tears in my eyes, I spread the news to several more friends who also wept with joy. Then I told some other friends from my Church in Pearisburg, Virginia. We all wept together! I watched very undemonstrative people become demonstrative and utter "PRAISE GOD!" as tears filled their eyes. There was something very special about this story, for you see this entire community has heard nothing but darkness, sadness, and news of despair and despondency. The repetitive scenes and endless discussions of death, injury, and insanity kept appearing on our television sets.

This blackness was followed by conversations, E-mails, phone calls and endless debates at work, home and play of the same darkness, which has so pervaded our community. This tiny pinprick of light, this story about Jarrett Lane has helped roll back the clouds, which have been hanging over us. It has brought us a ray of hope. Brought a smile to our faces. Replaced tears of sorrow and horror with those of joy and inspiration. May all of Christendom read this Story. May all Christians everywhere hear and rejoice. Grace, Grace, Sweet Grace!

Some one mile from the tiny town of Narrows, Virginia (where Jarrett was from), I along with about 100 other parents and friends had gathered at 9:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 18 2007 to send our High School kids on a 5 day Symphonic Chorale trip to Orlando Florida. The Virginia Tech shootings were still fresh and raw in every mind. I was moved beyond words to watch the students, faculty, and parents slowly form one huge circle, hands enjoined, in the Parking lot for prayer. Later I noticed that parents were hugging their kids a little tighter, a little longer, a few more times. They said, "I love you" and looked their kids in the eyes. I think Jarrett smiled. The darkness is lifting from our community. My prayer is that Parents and their Children everywhere will come to know Christ so that in the event that they send their Loved ones out one day, and it turns out to be the last day, that they will have obtained that beautiful hope that says "We shall embrace again one day". Jarrett Lane's dear mother has that hope. She has that assurance.

Jarrett is home now. He's home. Thank God almighty He's home.

Please pray for our community.

I posted last week that we have a friend who was injured at VT. He's still in serious condition in the hospital and has bullet fragments near his spine and in his head. There have been improvements and hopefully he will recover fully. I believe he will graduate in 2 weeks, although he won't get to "walk" with his class. :sad1: The family has been keeping all his friends and family updated on a daily blog. If you want to read it it's http://www.seanmcquade.faithweb.com
