Day 2 – 5/6/05 – “Get up! Get up! We need to go play!

Plan: 6:30am wake up call, EMH at MK, lunch at Kona’s Café, Dinner at Artists’ Pointe, Wishes.

Actual: I had quite a day planned, and knew it would be a lot for Shell to take…but still…the 6:30am call comes, and I’m up and bouncing on the bed like an overgrown kid trying to get Shell up…it almost works…. A few tries later, we’re both up, showered and dressed. Off to the cafeteria for some breakfast, we both decide on a plate with eggs, bacon, sausages, potatoes and a biscuit. The food court comes again shows it’s lack of understanding of plurals when we each get one sausage (yes I checked and the ‘s’ was on the menu, no big deal though). It’s ok, but we decide to forgo the food court for the rest of the trip. We finish up and are off to the bus stop.

Great weather today, cloudy most of the day, a little sun, but temps were in the low seventies. Shell couldn’t believe this was Florida (memories of mid-august haunted her). We get a seat on the bus and enjoy the relatively short line, get to the park, go through security (this is new to us, but shell only has her tiny purse with the digital camera in it), and I’m off the guest services to activate my AP (this was supposed to be down last night at downtown Disney, but we got in too late). That done, we use our tickets, and aren’t even asked to do the star trek spock finger scan thing…. Weird… we walk down main street around 8:25, ok, so it’s extra magic half-hour, I can deal. Castle looks great, although the giant Americas funniest video stage was annoying…one stop for a pic is all I can stand, as I drag (literally) Shell towards tommorowland.

We grab a fastpass for stitch (why I don’t know, we never ended up using it, and I’ve heard only horrible things about it), although standing at the exit of Alien Encounter watching screaming kids used to be one of my favorite pastimes during the college program (hey, you have to do ‘something’ to offset all the good magic I created while working), I know, I’m evil…. Then it’s on to Buzz… I love this ride, it’s a ride, it spins, you get to shoot, and it’s a competition… Shell’s not big on the spinning (spinning in general makes her sick) but I get few in. Absolutely NO line, our scores were horrible (but mine was twice hers :P ), we almost do it again, but run off… peoplemover is a favorite, but wasn’t open yet. We considered Space Mountain, but Shell chickened out, and I have memories of my legs being squished into those little cars, so we pass… off into fantasy-land, a place we didn’t dare venture on our past trips (even on my college program the lines were always nuts in the afternoon and nights). We ride Pooh with no wait, Shell gives it a thumbs up, I think it’s cute, has some good effects….next is snow white and peter pan w/out any wait either. We hop into Philarmagic, which is new to both of us… we get right inside, but wait 10 mins or so for the next show. I loved it, one of the best 4d movies I’ve seen yet, although it may have been my eyes and it being the morning, but the 3d seemed kind of blurry, this was Shells favorite so far…

Out of Philarmagic, the park is now open, but we barely notice… on to Small world, just to see the new paint and such..I should’ve passed, it looked nice, but the boats have no leg room, and my knees started hurting…then the boats backed up… finally we get set free and head over to Big Thunder Mountain….. I try to explain to Shell that space mountain is a kiddie ride compared to thunder (she’d done thunder before, but not space), but she wont hear it (something about not telling her that rock n roller coaster went upside down last trip I think)… no line again, I forgot how great this coaster is, the themeing, as well as the three separate lifts. I guess I was spoiled during my college program, riding the fasted coaster at Disney two times (at least) a day numbed me… we almost did it again, but I wanted to ride my favorite…splash mountain.

Whenever a group or myself would go to MK during the college program, no matter how chilly (I did the program January through may), I insisted we go on splash… no wait here either. I loved the ride, although we did get stuck mid-way through, in-between two of the scenes where the song is different… and after that the logs were a little close for Shell’s comfort (explaining the computer and brakes doesn’t work with Shell). The stops made Shell not like the ride, me, I got over that quickly, especially after being soaked (sitting in the front row). Getting a little hungry, we go looking for dole floats… me being an idiot, forgets where they are, and instead find the place next to the tiki room, we end up getting coke floats, then go on jungle cruise with a 20 minutes wait. We couldn’t decide what to do next, Pirates, Mansion, and others were an option, but then we realized it was almost noon... time for our PS at Kona’s café, boy time flies when there’s no lines!

We make our way to the hub, then down main street, quite a few people were just arriving, we were two fish going against a giant sea of people going the other way. We made it out and decided on a boat ride to Poly. We wait for awhile, finally the boat comes, we stop at the Floridian, then into Poly. Poly impresses Shell very much, “now this is my idea of a vacation” comes out of her mouth… well, it would’ve been nice, but a little too pricey. We find Kona’s almost empty, no need for the PS..oh well, better safe than sorry. I order the drink that comes in the giant pineapple, makes for some interesting pictures (boy it was strong too, the bicardi 151 gave it some bite). I couldn’t decide on what to eat, Shell ended up with a chicken/bacon sandwich (excellent), and I ordered the wontons (ok, I meant to order the crab cakes which I had seen, but had a brain fart and ordered the wonton’s instead), and the appetizer salad. The salad was very good, lots of greens, nuts, blue cheese, and strawberries…interesting combo, but it must’ve been good, it disappeared quickly…

Since I promised Shell time each day to relax, we headed back to French quarter (via monorail to MK, then bus), Shell decides she doesn’t really like busses, or lines… Ha! Wait till tonight….. Back at the hotel, we wander around, the grounds are very nice, we walk along the river, then up to the room for…a nap…. A shower, change of clothes later, we were off to our 5:30 PS at artists point. I decide the boatride to downtown Disney would be neat, then a bus to MK. The boatride was very nice, I liked seeing the treehouses for the first time, even if they aren’t used anymore, we get to the dock…then continue to float by it, with some awful noises coming from the back of the boat… turns out the boat lost reverse… the solution, let the boat go all the way into the corner between the dock and rainforest café, then get out and walk it back..funny to watch…

We decide to do some shopping (correct that, whenever shopping is involved, it’s Shell doing the deciding, me, the paying). Into World of Disney (ten percent off after all) we look around, and around, and around…. The prices are nuts to me, especially since I used to do all my Disney shopping at Property control (75% off baby!), I love the Disney beanies, but $13??? I was paying $1.99 from property control back in 2000… Shell decides she’s not really hungry, and doesn’t want to ride another bus…ummm..ok..then what? More shopping? Ugh… a few stores later, she agrees to go to dinner…but I’m not about to blow $150 on a dinner that she doesn’t even want… but we hop onto the bus for wilderness lodge anyways, turned out to be a good choice.
Shell loves the lodge as soon as she sees it. She didn’t ‘get it’ from the pictures. She now says she wished we stayed all four nights there…doh…. We look at the artist point menu… but nothing jumps out at Shell, I thought she liked salmon, turns out she hates it… ok… decide on Whispering Canyon, 10 minutes later we are seated in the corner. Our server is nice and quiet (which is fine w/us), but we enjoy watching everything else going on. We watch the horse race, order the bar-b-que platters, which were great. The family next us eventually asked for ketchup….but only ended up with two bottles….kind of depressing after what I’d read… we finish up around 8:20, and head out to MK for wishes.

We run down to the docks, and get a boat with 25 minutes to spare. The weather is very cloudy, windy, and cool… it take the boat driver three tries to dock. We get on, then go to fort wilderness, three tries to dock, then to mk, three more tries to dock… we make it into the park and are right in front of the train station when wishes starts. Turns out it’s the exact same spot we saw the fireworks from back in 99. I almost get run over by an electric wheelchair, again… Wishes was amazing, although I think it’d be much better from the hub, with all the fireworks around you. Wishes ends and we make a mad dash over to the right to the photo center…. We find some rocking chairs on the porch and camp out. It’s absolutely overwhelming the amount of people in the park, all leaving at once. They never seem to end, we enjoy people watching, and looking for crying kids (yes I’m evil) we don’t see many, just lots of tired ones. We wait a good hour or so, then browse the candy store (mmmm, candy) then head out to the bus stop, which is still packed, much to the disappointment of Shell. 3 or 4 busses later, we end up standing for the ride back. Shell doesn’t grasp why people have to stand, she thinks its very inefficient… back to the hotel and we walk the half marathon (I tend to exaggerate) back to our room. We find the express checkout stuff on our door (ok, since we didn’t charge anything) but we also find the magical express letter, telling us we should check our bags for our flight tomorrow….yea…right….. off to bed… tomorrow, it’s epcot, soarin, le cellier, and some bar hoppin!
