Sharpton Doens't Like this!

What you see as blatantly racist and what THEY see as blatant racism is based off the life they lived. To Sharpton that picture is. I was offended at first glance. I keep looking at it, now I'm like, I don't know. Believe it or not, different people (even in the same race) have different life experiences. Saying to N-word is blatant racism to me, but young black people don't see it that way. They even have an explanation. I can't make them see different. What I can do, is hope they keep on living, grow mentally and one day they will understand. That's all I'm saying.

No what you said is that I stated Sharpton was not entitled to his opinion.

I agree with you 100% that it could be seen as racist. I do not believe that was the intent but I'm not naive to think that nobody would be offended by it. My point is that if something is offensive, we have the right to ignore it, thats all.

It's not OK to compare African Americans to primates due to the historical racism involved in the comparison. What is so hard to understand about that?

I understand the historical racism but it is still a double standard. Its ok for the white president to be compared to a monkey but not for the black president to be compared to a monkey? That IS a double standard.

Shouldn't people be worked up at the folks who create the problem instead of the person who points the light on the problem?

I hate to break it to you, but Al Sharpton is not the light-shedder in this instance. ;)

But what exactly is the problem?

I know the answer to that. The problem is people like Sharpton who cry "Racism!" like the boy who cried wolf. He makes everything about race, whether it is or not. Racism still exists and always will (by every race and against every race), but people who cry racism at the drop of a hat lessen the impact of real racism. Sharpton and his faux outrage over racism make it much harder for the people who are actual victims of racism to be taken seriously.

No, it isn't. It's a moot point.
(Sorry - couldn't resist! ;))

People can choose to be offended by this all they want, but frankly I'm offended by the double standard. Either it is okay to compare a president to a primate or it is not. There should not be a double standard. And of course this cartoon was not about Obama - it was about congress, so the whole thread is moot anyway. :)

No actually I meant mute (ie it's falling on deaf ears - your point is not being heard).

Shouldn't people be worked up at the folks who create the problem instead of the person who points the light on the problem?
Yes, and I thought it was inappropriate, but I still think Sharpton likes to get people all worked up, so that he can be in the limelight.

In regards to our President either he can be treated differently than any other president because of his race or he can be treated the same as every other president regardless of his race. Can't have it both way.

If something is ok to say to or about a past president and is not ok to say to or about our present president than it is a double standard no matter what.

Thank history for that.

Exactly!

You know, it's NOT FAIR that a white person can be compared to a chimp and a black person cannot. Frankly I find the "double standard" argement is a red herring and an attempt to sweep the possible racist implications of the cartoon under the rug.

I understand what you are saying, I just disagree. Either you can compare a president to a primate or you can't. Now if the cartoon was actually about Obama (which it isn't) I would think it was poor judgement of the artist to compare him to a primate because there is a history of racists comparing black people to monkeys. However, just because there is a history of that does not mean that every instance of such a comparison is racist. There is an established history of it being acceptable to compare the president to a chimp. I don't think it was racist to print those pictures of Bush's head on a chimp, and I don't think it should be any different to print the same exact pictures with Obama's head on there instead. Realistically it would be extremely poor judgement because some people will scream "Racism", but that doesn't make it racist.

News flash - he is different. You don't think concessions would have been made for a woman president. Remember the pig and lipstick threads. Although McCain and Obama used that phrase prior to the WORLD even knowing who she was, it was interpreted as being about Palin. Regardless if Obama meant that toward her or not (I don't think he did), he sure didn't use that phrase again.

Let's work on NOT giving him a reason. :thumbsup2

I think that alot of the disagreement boils down to Sharpton himself. This man used to be a leader for civil rights but has become such a sensationalism that he is almost as equal as Anne Coulter. It's become that no one really wants to listen to him because he is always onto someone about something that has nothing to do with him. Instead of speaking up often about this, that or the other he needs to speak up and pick battles that are important.

I'm not trying to lessen people's opinions about this cartoon. I think that the only thing this cartoonist wanted was to create a stir and he did so he got what he wanted. He is no better than the Anne Coulters and the Al Sharptons.

My gran used to say look at the source before getting all upset. This is one of the times the source should be looked at.

Lets first find out what the picture actually represents. We all have our opinions, at this point none of them right and none of them wrong. If there is a reason why Sharpton should be spouting off, more power to him, but if there isn't even better.
He couldn't possibly feel that it is still racism if it came out that the chimp represents Congress, right?

I still don't see how the chimp could represent anyone but congress. They wrote the bill. Obama didn't.

I agree, but I don't think others realize that or even care.

That isn't true.

There are plenty of people who listen to Sharpton. There are plenty of people that seek him out when things go wrong. When Sean Bell was killed, his family went to Sharpton and asked for his help.

People don't agree with his tactics so they want to push him to the side.

It's like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X - WEB Dubois and Booker T Washington.

All of these men were working for the same goals. However, people were more comfortable with King and Washington. So they praised the actions/ words of two while condemning the others.

The outcry over New York Post cartoonist Sean Delonas' dead monkey cartoon today is growing louder. But he has such a rich history! We assembled ten of his all-time classics of hate:

Al Sharpton's favorite cause is Al Sharpton.

I think the monkey represents Congress.

And by the way, blacks were not the only people refered to as monkeys- Irish immigrants in the 1700 and 1800's were too.

It was and is wrong no matter what race is being insulted.

But that is not the case with this cartoon.
