Sharpton Doens't Like this!

So ... those who did view this cartoon as possibly racist are not intelligent? Honestly, I think the cartoonist left it ambiguous for a reason. We're all talking about his cartoon, right?

Yep, I like your explanation even better.

The website went on and on about how blacks are monkeys.

Let me ask you this....Do you think "blacks are monkeys"?

I don't:confused3

So, shrug and walk away. Maybe give an eyeroll  , perhaps breathe a sigh of relief that normal people don't think that way and go about your life.

There are freaks on the internet. Some like to make fun of fat people, some dislike Jewish people, some despise Asians and some liken blacks to monkeys.

They are not the norm. They are idiots.

Don't look to be hurt by random websites. You can find offensive matter for any race/religion/human being out there.

People like to make fun of other people that are not like them:guilty:

That is life.

I know blacks aren't monkeys, policemen aren't pigs, the Welsh aren't cheap and Indians aren't givers that take back;)

I will hold my head high and laugh and anyone that says differently.

Sticks and stones.....:flower3:

This cartoonist, Sean Delonas, also drew a few anti-gay cartoons that were published in the New York Post. I am about to leave my office, I will link from home.

My point is it would not surprise me if he knew the possible implication and didn't care.

Everything is not about race. I hope Obama has thicker skin than that. I didn't read it that way at all.

How about instead, you just don't throw things in the mix that ARE racist. Why do we now have to be careful of how someone else interprets these things? It seems like thats their own personal problem, not the problem with whats written or illustrated, or said.
(you, us, we, them meaning all/any people)

As far as the single chimp the only thing I can think of is that the cartoonist wanted to include 2 of the biggest news stories in his satire. I don't think he should have had to worry about the backlash of Al Sharpton but maybe he could have been more conscientious of the poor woman who was mauled and her family :sad2:

No, how about we are careful in general and not try to interpret other feelings. What might be offensive to one might not be to others. Some men and woman use the B-word all the time, many are not offended by that - others are. When people (usually woman) are offended I wouldn't try to convince them why she/he shouldn't be. It is a mute point. Some people are highly sensitive to racism. Especially older African-Americans – like there are a lot of older racist. If you don’t agree with their assessment you’re welcome to give your opinions but to argue about it is silly to me.

Well sorry but not everyone is highly sensitive of racism
and do not interpret every little thing that could possibly be racist AS racist. If a person feels offended then that is their own personal feeling, it however does not mean it was the intent. Like I said if you are looking for it, you will find it, if you aren't then you won't see it. In this case its in the eye of the beholder. If its offensive to you, don't look at it but don't expect ALL people to feel the same.

On a personal level if I am offended by something, I just ignore it. If its music or a cartoon or a TV show I just don't bother with it. Everyone can be offended by something, especially if they are looking to be. The great thing is everybody can also choose to close their eyes.

FTR I wasn't arguing, I was disagreeing

I agree with everything you wrote in this post, but that isn't what this thread is about. It's about Sharpton's thought that this might be a racial slur toward Obama. It might be or it might not be. In truth I don't know. But based off history it's not farfetched to believe it was racist. AND coupled with posters trying to act as if referring to Bush and Obama is the same. History doesn't say it’s the same. Sorry double standard.

Again, I don't have a problem with ANYTHING you wrote. It's YOUR opinion. Sharpton is entitled to his. The problem with YOUR statement is YOU don't think Sharpton SHOULD have HIS opinion (of the picture being racist) - I do. Everyone deserves their opinion - YOU and Sharpton.

You are mistaken, nowhere did I say Sharpton was not entitled to his opinion.
All I was doing was disagreeing with you when you said we shoudln't throw things that can be seen as racist into the mix. I said we shouldn't throw things that are (blatantly) racist into it. How that turned into me believeing that Sharpton or anyone else but me isn't entitled to an opinion is beyond me :confused3

I agree Sharpton like everyone else is entitled to their opinion, but I do believe Sharpton does like to stir the pot sometimes and it gets people worked up.

It is a mute point.

No, it isn't. It's a moot point.

(Sorry - couldn't resist! ;))

People can choose to be offended by this all they want, but frankly I'm offended by the double standard. Either it is okay to compare a president to a primate or it is not. There should not be a double standard. And of course this cartoon was not about Obama - it was about congress, so the whole thread is moot anyway. :)

Shouldn't people be worked up at the folks who create the problem instead of the person who points the light on the problem?

What you see as blatantly racist and what THEY see as blatant racism is based off the life they lived. To Sharpton that picture is. I was offended at first glance. I keep looking at it, now I'm like, I don't know. Believe it or not, different people (even in the same race) have different life experiences. Saying to N-word is blatant racism to me, but young black people don't see it that way. They even have an explanation. I can't make them see different. What I can do, is hope they keep on living, grow mentally and one day they will understand. That's all I'm saying.

That picture is a chance for him to spout off.

It's not OK to compare African Americans to primates due to the historical racism involved in the comparison. What is so hard to understand about that?

I'm not agreeing nor disagreeing with you; but I did read your post with interest especially the bolded part. How do they explain it?
