I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention this topic on this forum yet. It seems what some Disney shareholders want the Disney company to acknowledge "ex-gays".

I think it's ridiculous as Disney doesn't discriminate against anyone and if you are an "ex-gay," doesn't that just make you straight? :confused3

I for one am voting against this.

I thought there was a thread but maybe I'm just imagining it. And nope, being "ex-gay" doesn't make you straight, it makes you pretending to be straight! :lmao:

As I said before, I believe this is a way to allow bullying and harassment of gays but "ex gays" with out punishment. I will vote against it. I hope all shareholders that notmally don't vote will vote and vote against it.

I am trrying to figure a way to get to the meeting. It will be in San Antonio, at a fabu new Marriott Resort and Spa. I think I will have to stay somewhere less expensive and get a ride to the meeting, but I feel this issue is so imnportant and those who know better need to take a stand.

Ex gays my butt. You are or you aren't. There is no switch. Does anyone personally know someone who was gay that decided they were not? I know a lot of straights who have struggled against their feelings, knowing they were gay yet trying so hard to deny it. All my gay friends, they never seem to have those feelings, trying to stay gay for appearance sake or what ever.

Anyone else going to the meeting?

I actually do, an ex boyfriend of a good friend of mine, when he was gay, he was very active in the gay community and from what I hear now that he is ex gay, he is very active in an ex gay organization, I can't think of the name, but it is in NY or NJ. I think he's been ex gay for about 8 years now

Me. I'll be flying up a two days before the meeting as I've never been to San Antonio before.

I haven't been either, but I doubt I will be able to get away for more than the evening before and then scooting out as soon as the meeting is over to get back.

I might go. I've never been to a Disney stockholder meeting, and it is only 40 miles from home.

I don't usually vote but this year I definitely will. I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet. When is the meeting? I go to San Antonio a few times a year for work so if the time is right I'll go to the meeting.

March 10th at 10:00 AM at the JW Marriott Hill Country.

Thanks. Unfortunately that's a couple weeks too early for me to make it.

Happy Afternoon.

I received my proxy vote request electronically on January 27th (I have all my financial stuff sent electronically). If you receive by mail, I'd bet it went out at same time.

If you vote with the Board's recommendations, you are voting against the ex-gay provision. It was one of only two "no" votes on the slate.

I know of 2 individuals who used to have lesbian relationships. One is a close friend of mine and ex-co-worker. The other is a client of mine. They are no longer in lesbian relationships and are living stright lifestyles. They both have shared with me that they seem to be shunned by both the heterosexual/homophobic community and the gay community as well. They find help and support in a group called First Stone Ministries. It's a ministry for ex-gays.

Anyways, I hope you don't see this post as an attempt to stir the pot or cause contention. I am just presenting a factual example of why some may feel that "ex-gays" are being discriminated against. My friends feel like there is no where they belong, no one who understands and no one who accepts them. These are real people with real feelings who feel discriminated against.

Wow that's great!

But I gotta ask a few questions about them......if you dont mind.

Now that they are straight, is anyone telling them they cant get married?

Is anyone telling them they cant adopt Children?

Can they be fired for being straight?

Oh and can they serve in our military, you know.... to help defend our country?

I've been curious about this for quite some time..........

An interesting post, my question for your friends would be just how they feel they are being legally discriminated against, and as this thread has to do with the stockholder proposal, what do they think such a proposal would accomplish?

I guess I'm asking, just how, exactly, they feel there is discrimination against against them...social discrimination is quite different from legal workplace discrimination. Everyone, all races, beliefs and orientations face a certain amount of social discrimination in daily life, but legally defined discrimination the workplace is another, and completely separate thing. I truly just can't comprehend that happening today at a corporation as large and diverse as Disney, especially one in the entertainment business. And how would people they work with know their dating history?

That's a good point. Social discrimination does happen all the time. Heck, I was a geek, so I know.
Legal discrimination is a totally different thing. thanks for pointing that out. I'm pretty sure my friends have only been socially discriminated against. I guess the only way they could be legally discriminated against was if their boss or co-workers were gay, and someone got fired after they came "out" as an ex-gay. That's highly unlikely to happen, but I wonder if that is what the stockholder proposal is about, since Disney has a large representation of the gay community. Again, highly unlikely, but possible?:confused3

I was curious to know if there were any specific instances of "ex-gay" discrimination at Disney, so I looked up that PFOX website, and this is all I could come up with--nothing at Disney though

I can't remember how to post a link, so I just copied and paste:

Presidential candidate Barack Obama was criticized by gay activists for allowing ex-gay gospel singer Donnie McClurkin to sing at a fundraiser. They insisted that Obama drop the African-American singer from the program. Gay singers did not receive this treatment.

Harvard University conducted two separate investigations against employee Larry Houston because he discussed his former homosexuality on campus.

Equality Virginia demanded that Washington DC Metro remove PFOX’s subway billboards advocating tolerance for ex-gays.

An ex-gay volunteer staffing PFOX’s exhibit booth at the Arlington County, Virginia Fair was physically assaulted because he refused to recant his ex-gay testimony. Wayne Besen, a former spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, falsely reported that the assault had never occurred.

After speaking at an ex-gay conference, Michelle McKinney-Hammond lost her programming on a broadcast station because gay activist Wayne Besen had complained to the station.

Again I'm not trying to cause anyone to be upset, I'm just presenting a different point of view. Eventhough I am a minority female, I have never felt the level of discrimination and intolerance that the gay community has experienced, so I cannot say I understand how you feel. However, I can try to empathize. Perhaps we should all try to do the same for "ex-gays" because apparently, they do exist. Please don't be upset with me. I apologize if I have caused any offense.
