Shame on Wal Mart

Wal Mart seems to set the standard. It seems that once they started opening earlier and earlier, others followed.

Kmart has been open all day on Thanksgiving for years. And my local Walmart has always been open 24/7 including Thanksgiving. It's not like this is the first time.

I definitely understand where you are coming from, OP, but at the same time, I don't think it's actually all that bad. My brother worked at an AT&T store for the past few years, and he used to have to leave our Thanksgiving festivities right after dinner so that he could go to sleep, since he had to get up at 3:00AM to go work all day on Black Friday. I think he probably would have preferred staying with us until going to work for a shift starting at 8pm.

And then there's the fact that plenty of Disney employees will be spending all day at work on Thanksgiving (and Christmas!)...

Geez if you're gonna be mad for the employees, be mad at Family Dollar, Dollar General, Waffle House.....list goes on. They are all open here on Thanksgiving Day. So are most stores like Walgreen's, Rite Aid, CVS.....all day.

Seriously. Is the OP going to be mad at Disney? After all, it's open on the holidays.

Not everyone spends the entire day with their family, heck some people are probably pretty eager to get away by 8 PM :)

I agree with the above 100%!

If you dont like shopping on thanksgiving, then dont shop. Pretty simple solution.

Some people dont celebrate the holiday. my family could care less about thanksgiving. We dont always celebrate. If we do, we usually have lunch together. not dinner. Id be happy to work and get time and a half pay. To each their own.

If you gonna hate walmart then hate all the other companies that are open that day too. Like Disney, restaurants etc.

And please, if you do go shopping, don't tell them it is a shame that they have to work.

I couldn't agree more! I'm a retail worker and while I get Christmas off, I usually work a short shift on Thanksgiving. There is nothing consoling or nice about having someone tell you anything along the lines of "Ohh, it must be terrible that you have to work today". I do understand a lot of people probably think they're being friendly or sympathetic, but believe me, we know we're working and it stinks.

I used to work at CVS so I worked Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. I would actually rather work an overnight Thanksgiving into BF because we are usually there til 4am Thur mourning setting up for BF and then you go sleep for a few hours, get up and eat and then try to go back to sleep by 8pm to get up and work at 4am. This way you can sleep til dinner and then go work an over night and be sleeping by 4 or 5 am

I'm not sure why you're saying "shame on them" because Walmart is not in the minority. I had to work during the day at Old Navy on Thanksgiving and then they closed for a few hours and reopened again. 8:00pm is pretty late, there's plenty of time to enjoy your family and friends before then.

Our Walmart is 24/7, as is Meijer. Movie theaters are open on Thanksgiving as well.

I don't see why anyone is angry or shocked by this. Thanksgiving has basically become a speed-bump holiday. It exists mainly as a eat as much as possible to prepare for the consumerist shopping extravaganza that occurs the next day. Much as runners carbo-load before a marathon, shoppers everywhere dose up on turkey and pumpkin pie, in order to nap early and have them ready to wake at 1 am to stand in line for impossible deals and a side order of fist fights.

Jeez, plenty of places are open on holidays and lots of folks have to work that day. My ex was a cop. I can create a holiday any day of the year. We were happy for the double time and had a full Thanksgiving dinner on a different day. We've been working around my BIL's shifts as an EMT and my nephew who works for the water treatment plant for years. We find a time when everyone can eat and have the holiday then. Not a big deal at all.

Hardly the same as those poor employees working so all those people can get a jump on Christmas shopping.

My DH worked holidays also, unlike you I wasn't happy for the double time, and his regular time was a fantastic rate. I am not driven by the all mighty dollar. To some of us it is a VERY big deal.

If people didn't show up, they would close the next year. Not going to happen though. Our family usually enjoys going to the movies after our Thanksgiving lunch. I guess we are contributing to the problem. Still won't stop us from going though. I avoid Black Friday (Thursday night) like the plague though. I hate shopping with crowds.

I remember when........many years ago (I will refrain from putting a number on myself) I worked at Walmart through high school/college. At that time, we didn't even open until 1:00 on Sundays. I would go to church, grab a quick lunch and then go to work. Of course, we also closed at 9:00 pm. We were definitely closed major holidays. Times change. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

So are you upset that Disney is open

Last year I went on Thanksgiving. There were fights and absolute chaos! I got stuck in the infant dept. for 45 minutes because the clerks blocked us in with carts. I almost had a panic attack!

No way I'm going this year! I would rather pay more. I probably will stick with online sales this year. So much safer!!!!

Oh boy!! Now people can trample each other to death for their $30 blue ray player 2 hours earlier.

I remember last year, there was a video of ppl fighting over a $2 toaster... I think i rather just sit home and watch ppl go crazy. :P

I loved working Holidays... its 2x the pay so why not! Disney does try to be nice and close the park a bit early but it doesnt really make a big difference... Its probably more beneficial to make park hours longer...

The thing is black friday isnt like what you see in the videos and on TV everywhere... its very low key in my location.. Its pretty fun. Everyone usually helps each other. There is no rushing around no pushing, no shoving. People help each other find stuff. I usually wait in line and my brother "runs around" looking for other deals while I wait for the "big stuff" (Ipods, xboxes) he also runs around and gets stuff for other people.. We go early scope out where everything is and then get in line.. I can not wait to go... its become a family thing since we dont eat together we shop together. By 6pm I'm ready to get away from the kids for a few hours anyway... ;)

Just once I would have loved to have been able to say "well, if it wasn't for people like you having to come in and shop I wouldn't need to be working".

I worked in a grocery store for 17 years. For many of those years I did late nights or overnights. I had to go in Thanksgiving night many many times..and yes people were in grocery shopping.

If people would stay away from the businesses that are open on holidays those businesses wouldn't keep being open. As long as they are making money on those days they'll open and expand hours to accommodate the consumer demand for it.

Do you realize that there are thousands of college who are forced to work at Disney 10-16 hour shifts Thanksgiving, Christmas eve, Christmas day, new years eve, AND new years day? Unable to see their families, and getting paid minimum wage, with no holiday bonus or floating holidays?

I'd rather start work at 8pm..

My son works at a movie theater . They are open Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day and every other day. He will be working at least one of the holidays

Kmart has been open all day on Thanksgiving for years. And my local Walmart has always been open 24/7 including Thanksgiving. It's not like this is the first time.

Yes, I thought Kmart started it all with retail stores. :scratchin

Not all employees dislike working on the holidays. :confused3

I have 2 friends that are concierges at hotels, they LOVE to get away from their dysfunctional families on holidays and volunteer for the holiday shift.

Grocery stores are open for people who forgot last minute ingredients.

My cousin does catering and gets holiday double time pay for catering Thanksgiving dinner.

Pretty much all restaurants are open on Thanksgiving here. Where do you think all the tourists go to spend their Thanksgiving after seeing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade? :confused3 Their hotels are open & staffed for them to go back to. (They had even put up workers to stay overnight, the night of Hurricane Sandy, as subways were down, so that the hotels would be fully staffed for the guests.)

Not to mention, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade float workers & police are on duty that day.

There are probably extra emergency room staff at hospitals as people choke on turkey bones or have allergy problems because the cook forgot someone is allergic to some ingredient they put in someone's food.

Buses, trains, taxis, toll booths & airlines & gas stations are all open or running.

The movie theatres are open here all day on Thanksgiving - again for those escaping families or going with their families. Les Miserable is set to open Christmas Day. :cool1:
