Seven Summers Ago

I don’t think he should be punished that severely by having his entire career destroyed.
He’ll go to rehab, try to make amends and after awhile this will be forgotten. Other artists have said and done worse and still had careers after.

Didn't know a thing about him but vaguely recall the SNL sitch. There's no coming back from this, he can't even work at Costco because he's famous/infamous. His best bet is to move to change his name, move to another country where he isn't so well known, and hope to get some bar gigs. Maybe there's a Costco in Tokyo where he could work his day job.

He'll find work as a songwriter, living off the royalties from other performer's renditions of his work. It's been done before, particularly in country music.

I never heard of him until I saw the news this morning. Now I'll always remember him as a racist, not an artist or musician.

I love so many of his songs (7 Summers, More Than My Hometown, Chasin You, The Way I Talk, Talking Tennessee, Whiskey Glasses and more). He is a really talented singer and songwriter. He’s had a string of incidents lately, and all seem to involve alcohol, so I think you all might be right about the drinking problem. Between that and his sudden success, he’s a hot mess.

So the big question is do we hold this against him forever? Is it possible for him to be schooled on racial sensitivity, truly change his perceptions and make amends - real amends, not just lip service - and perhaps grow as a human being? Our whole prison system is based on rehabilitation. If we believe a criminal can be rehabilitated, can racists be rehabilitated? I’m not defending MW at all - the N word is very hurtful and never allowed. Just wondering where we go from here as a society. If we believe that people cannot grow and change, then why all the activism, protests and marches to get people to grow and change?

I think he will return to his early days of performing live bar nights. There will still be folks that want to hear him.
He likely lost his "big" break opportunity. Too many talented folks without the baggage.

It's a reap what you sow, that's how life goes thing.

I think the problem with him saving his career is he’s had a history of controversy. May 2020- arrested for public intoxication. Oct 2020- the SNL debacle, where he went to bar and partied it up a week before his SNL appearance, so SNL pulled him from that week. And now it’s Feb 2021 and we have a drunk Wallen using the n-word casually. So it’s not a one-off, it’s a pattern.

And all are alcohol related. Maybe he needs help.

First country artist to top the Billboard 200 for 4 straight weeks since 1999, I'd say he's pretty big. Right now he's almost the entire itunes Top Ten for songs, and 3 of the top 4 for albums, this is for ALL genres.

I thought that too for just a moment, but if he's poison no one will want to record his music because then the artist joins the loser's circle. Maybe if it's credited to an alias? For the record I'm not fond of the cancel culture, I'm just predicting the outcome. Maybe he can go to rehab and get another shot, I don't know.

I don't know much about country music, but I remember when the Dixie Chicks made some controversial comment at a show in England and they were banned from radio for I don't know how long. Were they ever able to come back? Of course that was long ago when radio had much more of an effect on sales of product & tickets.

AGreed. Of course it must be allowed for him to change and grow and be/do better. So now he has to do the work. He has to actually rehabilitate himself and change. Otherwise, he is likely to lose everything. He has to prove himself.

ETA: I can't stand country music (the exception being "One Margarita" by Luke Bryan...it makes me smile) so other than his SNL idiocy and this I have no idea about any of Morgan Wallen's songs or anything and don't particularly care.

I love his songs but always thought he needed a new stylist...he always looks grungy to me...hate the mullet. Might not matter any more.....As mentioned this is not his first incident and many other country artists are not giving him a break either as it puts all of country music in a bad light. He was just in People magazine mid January talking about how he has to be an adult now and realize everything he does is in the public eye....that is what comes with fame. I guess he didn't take his own advice. His latest, Seven Summers Ago is a really great song....sad it won't be played anymore. For those that think he is a nobody....his sophomore album, "Dangerous" bumped out Taylor Swifts "Evermore" in the all-genre billboard chart. His career started on the Voice...he was part of Adam Levine's team. People Article link below. What a waste of a talent and future career......

I didn't know he started on The Voice...that's interesting! I stopped watching a few seasons back. I loved his songs and am so friggin' annoyed at him for being so stupid and bigoted. You're right: what a waste of talent.

I don't condone what he did and suspect there's def a substance abuse problem here, but it will be interesting to see if he's given a chance to make amends/come back.

I have seen quite a few reality stars/celebs/athletes/musicians say or do disgusting, despicable, discriminatory things...some even tortured innocent animals, (Michael Vick with his dogfighting ring,) yet they suffered few or no repercussions with respect to their lucrative career. We won't even talk about politicians who break serious U.S. laws yet never face repercussions.

Others do or say far less serious things - or maybe even speak what turns out to be the truth, yet have lost their careers way beyond any reasonable scope of what they said or did.

It's not equitable at all - and far too subjective. Just like our justice system.

Yep,he went from being the hottest Act is all genres to the coldest Act in all genres in 5 seconds.

Guess "you can't fix stupid" applies.

I agree. I liked his music just fine, but hate the late 70's/early 80's look he was trying to do.
He saw a picture of his Dad with a Mullet and decided to grow one himself just to see how it looked much to the chagrin of his Publicist.

One thing led to another and he decided to keep it sort of as his "trademark look".

The NAACP Nashville has extended an olive branch to Morgan Wallen. They want to meet with him.

“So, NAACP Nashville's inviting Wallen to have a conversation about what went down, and help him learn why his actions are hurtful. Guinn says the meeting would not be about condemnation ... but about love.“

This would be a good first step.

And there is precedence for him regaining some sort of career.

NASCAR and Country Music are probably the 2 entities with the worst reputations for "inclusiveness" and after being in a similar situation to Wallen,NASCAR driver Kyle Larson has been reinstated.
