Seven Summers Ago

If he has the N-word in his vocabulary to the point where it would just come out, he needs to be more than just embarrassed. He either has a drinking problem or a racism problem, or, most likely, both. What a bunch of BS. This guy needs to check his heart, as they say.
Lol. Either? What is it like, “I’m not racist, but when I drink I say racist things”.

That’s not a thing. Let’s not give him an excuse.

I thought that too for just a moment, but if he's poison no one will want to record his music because then the artist joins the loser's circle. Maybe if it's credited to an alias? For the record I'm not fond of the cancel culture, I'm just predicting the outcome. Maybe he can go to rehab and get another shot, I don't know.

I don't know much about country music, but I remember when the Dixie Chicks made some controversial comment at a show in England and they were banned from radio for I don't know how long. Were they ever able to come back? Of course that was long ago when radio had much more of an effect on sales of product & tickets.

I grew up on country music, &, as a Tennessee girl, I’m also very familiar w/ the type of persona in Wallen’s songs like “Seven Summers Ago” & “Talking Tennessee.”

I had never heard of him until this latest story & just now looked up the lyrics to a few of his songs. Country singers have been singing those type of songs for decades, & many have done it better, in my opinion. For a while there was a trend in country music for the music to be more pop & urban, & ”bro country” became very popular. I think, as someone who isn’t as current on country music as she used to be, Wallen returns to a more traditional country sound w/ his songs- which may sound “new” to people who aren’t as familiar w/ country music over the decades, if that makes sense.

Anyway... in country music, patriotism & love for one’s country is HUGE.

Years ago, the Dixie Chicks were in a foreign country & said to their audience, “Just so y’all know, we’re ashamed that the President is from Texas.”

And the repercussions were instant & incredibly long-lasting.

(In country music, you don’t mess w/ God, the USA, or your momma.)

My brother-in-law was stationed in the Gulf fighting the war at the time they made their statement, & my husband still refuses to listen to any of their music. And there are many like him.

So, no, the Dixie Chicks, so far, haven’t been able to really return to country music radio. Today, the overall climate is different, & they’ve gained some popularity - but not in traditional country. However, that said, country music & its climate *is* changing too, so you never know - case in point how swift the cancellation of Morgan Wallen has been.

But, in the eyes of country music & its fans what Morgan Wallen said is in a completely different ballpark. And, while there will be many who stop listening to him, there will be lots of others who won’t... whereas, w/ the Dixie Chicks, it was universal... it wasn’t just country music radio that cancelled them but every single country music fan as well. People were burning their CDs.

Edited to add - Also, too, the Dixie Chicks made a public statement at one of their concerts. Morgan Wallen was drunk, not in a public venue, & was recorded by a bystander. Morgan Wallen is not the first country music star to get himself in a mess while drunk. For some, it’s just part of the genre & will add to his legend/celebrity.

While I think his racial slurs were and are totally despicable, I also am not sure he should lose his entire career over it. When you look at the lyrics of some of the words to songs from other genres and artists that are actually being broadcast all the time on the radio, I think it is hypocritical his career is destroyed.

None of these people singing, writing about, or performing music with these slurs should be given any music contracts or have these songs played. Until that happens, (which it won’t), I don’t think he should be punished that severely by having his entire career destroyed.

I will also say, however, that he is obviously not the brightest bulb on the tree. Seems to make bad decisions quite frequently.

I love so many of his songs (7 Summers, More Than My Hometown, Chasin You, The Way I Talk, Talking Tennessee, Whiskey Glasses and more). He is a really talented singer and songwriter. He’s had a string of incidents lately, and all seem to involve alcohol, so I think you all might be right about the drinking problem. Between that and his sudden success, he’s a hot mess.

So the big question is do we hold this against him forever? Is it possible for him to be schooled on racial sensitivity, truly change his perceptions and make amends - real amends, not just lip service - and perhaps grow as a human being? Our whole prison system is based on rehabilitation. If we believe a criminal can be rehabilitated, can racists be rehabilitated? I’m not defending MW at all - the N word is very hurtful and never allowed. Just wondering where we go from here as a society. If we believe that people cannot grow and change, then why all the activism, protests and marches to get people to grow and change?

Were you for or against the Dixie Chicks being cancelled?

So on Tiktok there are countless videos made by African Americans who think this whole cancel culture thing is ridiculous and are not in the least bit offended by what he said. In fact, it seems like most of the people who are up in arms about it are white people. Most of the videos I have seen are sticking up for him and saying this should not be ruining his whole career. Just putting that out there.

I didn’t/don’t have an opinion one way or another about the Dixie Chicks. I never listened to them before they said what they said, couldn’t tell you one song they sing and didn’t hear about their banishment until very recently. They’ve just never been on my radar.

He is that after radio dropped him. Interesting.
I think it is a combination of his being right on the cusp of skyrocketing to "Kenny Chesney Level Fame" when the incident happened PLUS many folks who did not know who he was are checking him out out of curiosity and probably liking what they hear-his songs are amazing.

If he is genuinely remorseful and puts in the effort to change,I wish him the best.

I think one more bad move could end any hope for a complete return.

There are a ton of people supporting him. They announced nominees for a country music awards show and the majority of the comments were people saying he should have been nominated after he was deemed ineligible for this years awards. Every post I read about anything country music related has people posting photos & memes of Morgan and making comments in support of him.
