SHEP STOP READING(YOU WILL BE BORED)
Story about student is this in a nutshell. This is from the original teacher. The students were required to do some community service. The amount of hours that were done determined a grade worth 30 points. An A was 11-13 hours. They could do this over a 6 week period. The essay they were to write had this prompt:
Persuade the reader about the importance of community service to be an active member of the community.
They were given a web explaining what was required in each of the 6 paragraphs. The students had two weeks to complete this essay. They brought in their drafts during two classes and did peer editing. I honestly did not see everybody's essays. I have 120 students in 5 classes. Now I feel bad. When I graded this student's paper he preceeded to rip apart the teacher, the assignment, community service and the whole community service unit. Once I got my emotions in tact I realized that the only grade that I could give this student was a F which is worth 65 points. He strayed off the prompt and didn't complete the 6 paragraphs with the needed information. Other students were graded by this standard also. I called the teacher and she agreed with me about his disregard to the assignment. We also feel that his mother wrote the paper. We have a CBE(Writing Assessment) coming up in the next two weeks and if he does this then he will also receive an F. This parent is a trouble making parent and has been complaining the whole year about how hard 7th grade is and that it is too challenging. Fast Forward----- I shared this paper with the team and they told me to go administration before I give the paper to the student. Want to give them a head's up.
This is their decision--- Because mom has been a pain in the butt all year, if she complains then they will let the boy rewrite the essay for a better grade.
This is my decision---My objection is that it is not fair to my other students who honestly and innocently strayed off the prompt and paragraph requirements and they have received the grades that they earned with no second chances. So I told them that if this happens that I would honestly have a hard time regrading a paper by him and don't think that I would be fair. Therefore, if this happens, I will leave the paper for the returning teacher to grade. The 7th grade principal seemed OK with my response but then again I don't care. I have very strong feelings about accountability, fairness, and educating a child. I also know that the teacher will probably rip his paper apart because of what he did. It was very disrespectful and totally uncalled for.
