Server envy

Any idea how long servers stick around? Or whether they stay on the same ship or move around?
(We had someone I loved. But it was a couple years ago on a different ship than our next cruise. Seems like it would be a little crazy to think he'd be there...)
Servers generally work 6 months on, 2 months off. And yes, the certainly do change ships on occasion.
They work upwards of 16 hours a day, sometimes a few hours off in the afternoon or some days they get the morning off but work on the pool deck in the afternoon. Getting more that 4 hours of sleep in one stretch is rare! They work exceptionally hard and are responsible for every aspect of your dining experience... Even the food. They beg for those excellent ratings because anything less than excellence is considered failure.
Our last 2 cruises we have had the same server. He has become a close friend who I talk to several times a week. The stories he tells of his 5 years on DCL have really changed my perspective. It's not all fun and games, that's for sure. I respect them so much more now.

Yep...the American Dream.. My grandfather slept above his shop and worked 16 hours a day...Grandma was the asst, home keeper, child care person. THAT'S the traditional path to bettering your situation and/or family.
Good for them!
