Welcome Deena and Doug!!!! Congrats on the anniversary you'll be celebrating.

Hi everyone! Just popping by to say I've just finalised another part of the September trip!!! :yay: We've changed our existing pre-cruise DVC ressies for 3 nights in a BLT Lake View studio!!! :woohoo: I actually forgot all about phoning as I've been studying but just called, got thro' straightaway to a very helpful CM and was able to transfer my existing September booking with ease... :worship: Oh I love it when a plan comes together... :cloud9:

Congrats on nabbing a BLT ressie. You'll have to give us a TR on BLT. We've got a 2 bdr MK view for our trip in Nov./Dec. and I can hardly wait.

I'm going to be making you and Cheri clean the lentils out of the fireplace, and only then, may you go to the ball.

We have a fireplace? :lmao:

BTW....WHY didn't someone tell me I would like lentils? I can't remember ever having them (though possibly I did in a soup at some point or another in the last 59 years). I had a great hot lentil and garbanzo bean 'salad' and it was sooooo yummmmy.

My dear, there are TWO fireplaces at the Villas at the Wilderness Lodge. One in the main "lodge" and one in the DVC section.

OK, trivia challenge ...

1. What is the "backstory" on the DVC building and the main lodge.

2. According the the backstory, which came first in time, the main lodge or the DVC section?

Ahhhh, she is so sweet Jan :cutie: :lovestruc Thanks for posting this! I can't believe she is more than 2 months old already!

Kathe

Neither can we. Seems like yesterday we were there, holding her and she was 2 weeks old and at the same time it feels like it was 2 years ago.
::yes:::sad2:

I have added you to the list of cruisers on page 1 post 1. The * at the beginning of your entry (alphabetical by DIS name) means we know you are coming. Those with no * are the ones who we have not heard from since New Years or before.

As you have questions, post them. We have some DIS activities planned and explanations can come as you ask.

Am I the only person around here who knows the original Grimm's version of Cinderella, before Disney got their hands on it?

"They took her beautiful clothes away from her, dressed her in an old gray smock, and gave her wooden shoes. "Just look at the proud princess! How decked out she is!" they shouted and laughed as they led her into the kitchen.

There she had to do hard work from morning until evening, get up before daybreak, carry water, make the fires, cook, and wash. Besides this, the sisters did everything imaginable to hurt her. They made fun of her, scattered peas and lentils into the ashes for her, so that she had to sit and pick them out again. In the evening when she had worked herself weary, there was no bed for her. Instead she had to sleep by the hearth in the ashes. And because she always looked dusty and dirty, they called her Cinderella.

Ian, I don't know the Wilderness Lodge/DVC backstory. Sure would like to hear it though. Please enlighten us.

I haven't been in the DVC section over there (as I have been for Beach Club and Boardwalk) and don't know what it looks like.

Silver Creek Springs: A History

The history of Silver Creek Springs, a valley of exquisite beauty and amazing natural wonders, located in America‘s great Northwest, can be traced back to one rugged individual who embodied the frontier spirit of that long ago time. Colonel Ezekiel Moreland first discovered this majestic landscape in the early part of the 19th century, and then later, along with his daughter Genevieve, and soon to be renowned artist Frederich Alonzo Gustaf, returned to settle the area and make it their new home.

Their story is all the more remarkable in that it never really happened. Silver Creek Springs exists neither in the history nor geography of this country’s great western frontier. The area that Ezekiel Moreland described as “a tranquil valley along the shores of a splendid lake,” is in reality located in the heart of Walt Disney World, just minutes from the Magic Kingdom theme park. It is Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort.

The story behind the Lodge has been related to guests via The Silver Creek Star, a faux newspaper given to guests at check-in. Mixed with guest services information are a number of articles that relate the stories behind the Lodge’s creation and its many points of interest.

Ezekiel Moreland was a veteran of the War of 1812. Recently widowed and inspired by the accounts of Lewis and Clark, the retired colonel mounted a westbound expedition in 1823. His party of fifty or so intrepid adventurers however, quickly met with disaster. A buffalo stampede, some ten thousand animals strong, destroyed nearly all their provisions a mere eighty miles up the Missouri River from their starting point. They limped back to St. Louis, and all but Moreland gave up on the expedition. In a letter to daughter Genevieve he wrote:

“I take to the wilderness alone. The good earth will provide me with everything I need to survive. I have my gun. I have my courage and I have my determination. What need I of anything else, especially of cowardly scoundrels who turn ashen in the face of the smallest adversity.”

Two years later, Moreland would emerge back out of the wilderness and send for his daughter, engaging her with news of the paradise he had uncovered. Moreland had also become a wealthy man, having brought back from his travels a substantial collection of beaver pelts and other furs. Intrigued by her father’s good fortune and unbridled passion, Genevieve, a young art curator, took a leave of absence and set out for St. Louis where her father was waiting. Joining her as a traveling companion was the young Austrian artist Alonzo Gustaf who desired to capture in painting the new frontier he had been hearing so much about.

Upon arriving in the valley of Silver Creek Springs, Genevieve and Gustaf found their destinies newly defined. According to the Silver Creek Star:

“Using the small fortune her father had raised from the fur trade, they brought out a crew of men from St. Louis and had a small lodge built near the fresh water spring. Jenny would remain in Silver Creek Springs for the remainder of her life. She established a preservation area in her father's honor, where others could enjoy the natural beauty of the wilderness. The Wilderness Lodge welcomed artists, scientists and nature lovers of all kinds over the years. As the number of visitors grew, the Lodge expanded to accommodate them. Eventually, they added rooms that grew around the spring, making it part of the Wilderness Lodge.”

The Villas at the Wilderness Lodge

The Villas at the Wilderness Lodge, "predate" the main building in the story. This was housing built for the workers who brought the railroad to Silver Creek Springs, hence is is slightly more rustic than the main lodge, and has a railroad theme, and memorabilia.

Other Stories

There is a legend that a young Indian boy was transformed into a bear cub. But is it a legend? "Proof" can be found if you look down. You will see human boy foot prints in the path that start to transform in the prints of bear paws. The prints trail off into the woods.

The Wilderness Lodge, I believe goes much further than any other resort in creating an elaborate environment that goes beyond the exterior theming. Little touches of the "legends" and "history" can be found all over the property.

Is anyone interested in doing either the Snuba or the Swim w/ Sea Lions at Coral World with me??

I may make my reservations this week.

Thanks for sharing the story, Ian. I can't wait to explore the Villas area too.

Monica, I may be doing the dolphin thing at Tortola with Dianne...I'm sure it will be May before any discussions will commence.

Are your reservations linked together? If they are I believe you can make a res at Palo for a table that holds all of you.

No, they are not linked with us. Do you think there be a way when we get onboard to have them have a dinner with us? How can I link them with us?

Thank you!

Nicole

You would have to call DCL reservations and request that the reservations be linked in the system.

ALSO, they will have to be paid in full at the 90 day mark (as you will need to be also). Otherwise they wouldn't have to pay up till 75 days.

As stated, linking is easy, just call DCL (or your TA if you used one) and have them link the two reservations. They will need the full name of the lead person and reservation # for both cabins (...and maybe the birth date of the lead person...can't remember that part for sure...)

I dare say you are the only one who knows the original. They are too grim for me. I like DISNEY!! :)

You are so right. I would have loved to see Disney do what really happened to the ugly stepsisters, or what really happened to the evil queen in Snow White.
