School Hours

My daughter is currently in kindergarten in a k-8 public school. The school hours are 8:10-2:10 for kindergarten, 8:15-2:15 for 1-6 and 7:45 to 2:20 for 7&8. I believe high school is 7:45 to 2:20 as well. The school district is trying to make the school day longer. The current rumor if everything passes is that her school will go 7:45-3:30. It will not go in effect until she is in 2nd grade and still needs to get the official approval etc. I personally think that is too long for kindergarten which my one year old would then have in a few years. Also the purpose is to help improve the academics to get us up to par with the rest of the world. However they are adding 8 minutes to core academics and the rest of the time will be for a second "special" per day. A special is a class like gym, music, art, computers, Spanish though those may just be for the younger grades.

I'm just curious what others think and what their local public school hours are.

Your school day is an hour shorter then our day. Our kids go from 8:05-3:05. They switched to all day kindergarten here about 7 years ago. The kindergartners love it. They do have a rest time after lunch for kindergarten, some kids sleep but most don't.

Elem is 9 to 3:20 - rest are an hour behind that. We have a half day K though.

We have a lot of elementary schools here in Virginia Beach so we have "A" schedule schools and "B" schedule schools (due to bussing issues).
"A" schools go from 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
"B" schools go from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

As for kindergarten:
Morning Kindergarten (A Schools) 8:00 a.m. - 11:10 a.m.
Morning Kindergarten (B Schools) 8:30 a.m. - 11:40 a.m.
Afternoon Kindergarten (A Schools) 11:20 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Afternoon Kindergarten (B Schools) 11:50 - 3:00 p.m.

Middle school: (Grades 6 - 8) 9:10 a.m. - 3:40 p.m.

High school: (Grades 9-12) 7:25 a.m. - 2:20 p.m.

My girls elementary is 8 to 2:30 appoximately. My sons Jr high is 7:30 to 2 pm appoximately. They only have half day K here and I can't remember the hours but it always seemed like to short of a school day for me. I wish they would of had full day K.

Pre K and Kinder 8:00 AM - 3:10 PM
The rest of the school district goes from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM

I live a really small town, but our district covers an ungodly amount of area. The high school and middle school kids are bused in, then those same buses have to make a 2nd trip to pick elementary kids up and then it's a repeated process in the afternoon.

High school and mid school start at 7:50 and get out at 2:40. Elementary starts roughly at 8:50 and gets out at 3:20. If memory isn't failing, those were the elementary school hours anyway.

My kids go from 8:15am till 3:19 pm, with a lunch break and one recess. That's a K and a 1st, and they do great with it. Last year, we went 7:45 to 2:45, but they changed it for the buses.

K-5 go from 9am until 3:15. Middle and highschool goe from 8am until 2:45. Middle and highschool also have 9th period where you can stay and do work or other things, so any after school sports don't start until 3:30. In highschool if you are taking music or drama your science labs are before regular school hours, they start at 7:15.

My son starts K next year and his school times are 8:23-3:13 (K-5). Right now we have the option of full day or half day K. Half day ends at something like 11:30.

K starts at 7:45 around here and they can leave at 12 or stay until 2:30. (at least they could when I was in K). Everything else is from 7:45-2;45-3.

Just saw this and had to post.,.. We actually start a lot later than most of you at the elementry level.
Here it is All day K thru 6th and we start at 8:50Am to 2:50pm
And 7-12th it is 7:40am till 2:30Pm.
My girls are both "walkers" and home from school by 3:05Pm,,, I think they either run or their teachers let them out before the bell...

All schools in my district (regardless of grade level) begin at 8 and end at 3:15.
Where I went to school, HS and MS went from 8-2:35 and elementary schools went from 8:50-3:20

2-5 8:30 to 3pm Weds all get out a 2pm

Middle School 6-8 9 to 3:40pm
High School 9-12 7:30 to 2:30 block schedule with 1, 3, 5 and 2, 4, 6 on opposite days.

You have to love the 3:19, why not just make it 3:20 or 3:15????

Middle 8:15 - 2.30
HS 7:20-2:00 or 10:30 - 4:30 (depends on what session you have)

That is a way shorter school then we went to school. I think the extra time is needed and they maybe selling the music etc. to the parents and then add more acedemic classes later. The longer day is also better for the parents who work.

There's some data here in VA that shows higher test scores in elementary schools that have a higher content of art and music (most schools have it here only have it every 5-7 days). So it's possible that something like that is the basis for lengthening the school day.....

Elementry in my county is 9:00-3:45. Wednesday is 9:00-2:00.
