Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me which of the rides at disney/universal might be considered scary. My girls love the thrill rides - going upside down, backwards, fast, big drops etc are all fine (for them anyway!). However the older two especially are real wimps when it comes to theming that could be considered scary. Which rides do you think we may need to avoid or at least show them on youtube first? :)

Just like my DD (and me to an point as well) so we have never been on the Haunted Mansion! Yet she loved ToT :confused3

How old are they? Youtube videos formed a large part of my assessment strategy with my daughter.

I've seen kids flip out about Harry Potter's Forbidden Journey at Universal - quite dark and lots of creepy crawlies etc. The Mummy Ride is dark and rams you around a lot, but the queue is dark and I guess could be considered creepy, so maybe a warning on that one (the line is much worse than the ride itself). The T Rex is pretty menacing on Jurassic Park. Otherwise, nothing particularly scary at Universal.

My boys didn't like the dark bits on Pirates of the Caribbean and were also scared on Haunted Mansion but enjoyed it once the scare factor was over.

They were 7 and 4.5 when we went last year.

Dinosaur in AK also may be a bit much for anyone who gets a bit 'jumpy'.

My daughter didn't even make it through the intro for Dinosaur last time we were at AK. She burst into tears when they started playing the video. She's seen Exp Everest on video and isn't sure she wants to try it when we go next month because she's afraid of the Yeti.

it depends on the age and on the kids...
DD went on space mountain at 6 and loved it.
DS resisted pretty much everything until after he was 10, when he switched to loving thrill rides)..

you don't say how old your kids are...

potentially scary rides at WDW?
haunted mansion (MK), pirates of the caribbean (MK), tough to be a bug (at AK), Dinosaur (AK), Tower of Terror (DHS),

those are the ones i can think of..

if you child is claustrophobic they might not like mission space.
I had a woman start screaming in my pod when they started it....
really screaming....i managed to calm her down (i was riding alone) so she was ok, but it was touch and go for a bit there!!

My DD is terrified of most things and I would add Stitch's Great Escape to that list.

yes, but it's such a horrible ride, i would say that no one should go on it.
They totally ruined it when they changed it from alien encounter.
and how stupid were they......they changed it because they said it was too scary (and there were certainly lots of screaming children)..
so they did the stitch thing and it's still scary.....they're idiots!! alien encounter was sooooooooooo much better!!!!!

Hi, thanks for all your replies.

My girls are 11, 9 and 6 at the moment but will have all had another birthday before we go. :goodvibes

I have listed dinosaur, Its tough to be a bug, harry potter forbidden journey, jurassic park, the mummy, mission space and EE to look up on youtube.

We have visited dlp several times and they don't enjoy phantom manor and TOT there so I think we will probably give them a miss unless they suddenly feel brave. In Paris pirates is a big favourite so I don't think that one should be a problem. :goodvibes

Are there any other rides that are so bad no one should go on?

You have got to go on this and get your head swapped over with a ghost. It's one of the most brilliant imagineering moments at Disney!!!! My kids freaked out in the queue for this and refused to ride their first two visits. It was just the thought of it as they had no idea what was coming really. I honestly don't think it's scary really. Give it a go. My kids love it now.

I don't like big coasters myself but I quite like been freaked out a bit!

that's the only one that comes to mind.

However, don't take my word for it. Maybe you'll like it.
In fact, don't take anyone's word for anything.
you can read lots of reviews, but in the end, you need to try things for yourself.

i'm sure every attraction has its haters and its lovers.

you have to decide for yourself what you like and don't like.

for example, we hate universal studios and islands of adventure. Really hate it.
But lots adn lots and lots and lots and lots of people love it.
so don't take my opinion. Decide for yourself.

there are aspects of stitch's great escape that are interesting.
though it indeed might be scary for kids because of the dark.
And that's the reason tough to be a bug scares some very little kids - because of the dark.
But your kids are older than that - so you shouldn't worry about tough to be a bug.
it's scares toddlers.

You are so right Beth! Agree 100%

The first year we went, stitch had just opened-and stitch was ds favourite disney character.

We visited the ride/attraction over 10 times-
I have no negative feelings towards stitch at all-
However, I know I'm in the minority:dance3:

I'm a total ride wimp-
Rode splash mountain-and it was hideous!
Also hpfj was not scary but extremely unpleasant.

I've never tried any really big thrill rides-and have no desire to do so.
I actually think voyage of the little mermaid is scarier than dinosaur or haunted mansion. Ursula makes my skin crawl:eek:

I would add the Mummy at Universal.

It's quite intense, dark, jolty and fast, but very fun. However every time I ride it, it's more intense than I remember!

My Eldest DD has riden all the of "thrill rides" she is tall enough for and is keen to add Mission Space and EE to her list of rides she's done when we go back this year.

But she hates Shrek! Go figure. Not scary but doesn't like getting squirted by water, But will ride Kali River Rapids til the cows come home :confused3

I have never riden Haunted Mansion as I hate things like this, but have done every other ride. The thought of Hm freaks me out lol.

Thanks we do like to try things for ourselves but I know that we won't have enough time to do everything so may just save some of the less popular things for another time. :goodvibes

I think the little mermaid should be ok as they watch the film. :goodvibes
I'm the ride wimp of our family too, BTM is about as thrilling as I like - the girls are thrill seekers though!

I would add the Mummy at Universal.

Children are funny with their likes and dislikes! My girls aren't too keen on getting wet in this country they like the ride itself but don't like walking around wet afterwards - I think in Florida being wet may be a good relief from the heat. :goodvibes
