Saving Mr. Banks

Saw it on Sunday and LOVED it...so much so that I am hoping to see it again tomorrow. I also just rented "The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story" and it was SO interesting and moving (especially after Saving Mr. Banks). I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed SMB especially for the nostalgia factor.

Agreed about the Sherman Brothers movie - a surprising story, and rather dark. With their body of work I was expecting sweetness and light - not so.

Dh and I saw it...we both LOVED it, It's definitely one my fave movies EVER. Dh,who isn't a disney-phile like I am, was so emotional he didn't even see the cool B&W photos at the end.... this movie is GREAT,personally I don't think it was too dark or scary for any kid,if they're interested in the story...I thought it was gentle, and lovely, and magical overall.... (yes, some stuff happened in her life, but it was gently shown IMHO)

Great movie for adults.
Kids? Depends on the kid, what kind of difficulties they may have already had in their young life and how many questions Mom and Dad want to answer afterward. ;)

From an adult perspective I thought it was great. I don't care if it wasn't 100% factual in every single detail. I think it probably captured the essence of the story if not every fact of the story. That's why it's called "theatre".

DH, DD15 and I saw it last night and loved it! I was surprised how much DD enjoyed it. I saw her crying several times during the movie.

Loved, loved the scenes with the Sherman brothers! I also really liked Ralph--even if he didn't exist.;)

My 22 year old and some friends just got back (3 couples) from seeing SMB. They left 1/2 way through the film. said it was absolutely boring.

I'm supposed to see it tonight with some girlfriends but now I'm hesitate.

I never was big Mary poppins fan but I do like Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.

Hmmm...22 is a tough age. they are so used to slam,bang,blow-up,thrill-a-minute movies they probably did find it boring. It's a story, not Die Hard. A GREAT story, but it is a mellow movie. I loved it!

I'm surprised any adult would find it absolutely boring, but what do I know LOL. My dd, 18 in 3 weeks, and my 20 year old son saw it with me, and neither of them found it boring.

I think that is one of the charming things about the film, you don't even need to know who Mary Poppins is, really. Tom and Emma are so wonderful in this film, if you like either of them, I suggest you go.

Love, love, loved it! Best movie I have seen in a long time. I hope to go again next week. :goodvibes

Thought it was fantastic.....not too often nowadays do audiences applaud at the end, but they certainly did after Mr. banks.

Went to see the early matinee with some girlfriends. Here's my review.

1) We thought it was good. not the best film I've ever saw but definitely not the worst.

2) really enjoyed Emma Thompsons acting but I did not like the Travers character. I found her excessively mean and condescending. On the plane was it really necessary to insult some one with a baby? Even with the flashbacks I didn't feel any sympathy for her, I wanted to give her a spanking.
3) Like every one else I enjoyed Paul Giamatti's character (sp?)
4) Can totally understand how my 20 some thing kids and their dates found it boring.
5) loved how the women dressed. cute little kitten heels and a line skirts.

Blown away by Colin Farrell. I honestly didn't know he was in the movie.

I envisioned a completely different movie, but after seeing it, I'm happy I didn't know. I might not have seen it. It was a beautiful movie and I spent most of it crying over PL Travers (or whatever name she wants to be called) heartbreak. Tom Hanks was almost a side thought, a supporting role. It was great. My family (ages 15 , 21, 43 & 67) were all equally touched.

I agree with you, everyone keeps talking about Tom Hanks performance in the film, and yes he did a great job, but Colin Farrells performance was amazing. So real and heartfelt. No one even says hes in the movie when they are advertising it! I too thought it would be different but was very surprised at how good it was, and yup i cried alot too! Am in north carolina now visiting family and want to take my nephew but its not playing here!

I loved the movie. After seeing the movie and reading a couple of reviews I decided to read more about Ms Travers. If you found her excessively mean in the movie, you need to read about her in real life. I think the movie tried to smooth over her character flaws. She seems to have been a very unpleasant lady in more ways than shown in the movie. I think there is an interview with the surviving Sherman brother who still has nothing kind to say about her. She was one messed up person.

Saw it tonight. I had a free ticket from the movie Mary Poppins. I loved the ending of the movie. I did notice a one slight flaw in the movie premiere. They were able to use original character costumes for Mickey, Goofy, and Pluto, but Chip and Dale were current costumes. Looked a little out of place.

Any case, I feel like I could see it a half dozen more times before I catch everything that is going on in the film. One of special features on Mary Poppins blu ray is a small conversation between one of the Sherman brothers with the guy who played him.

LOL - I also noticed the Chip and Dale costumes.

I liked the juxtaposition of Walt and Travers (what a freaky name to take). Both had difficult childhood. Walt raises above it and wants to make childhood a happy time. Travers could not raise above it and she wanted to teach children the harsh side of the life.

My kids and I had a good discussion about this very topic after we saw the movie. :)

This has PG-13 rating - is it a fair rating. I know some of the darker issues it deals with, ftr. Would you take kids any younger than that (thinking 8-10 yr olds)?
My 9 year old DD loved it while be 13 year old DD thought it was okay. But I overall loved it! Beautiful film!
