Saving Mr. Banks

There was one glaring error that they didn't catch (one that drives me crazy!). Anyone who doesn't want to know, pass by this post!

Remember how P.L. Travers kept correcting everyone's grammar? "It should be number 17 Cherrytree Lane." When Walt shows up in London, he says, "I don't know why this was so hard for you and I." ARRRGGGHHH! It should be "for you and ME"! There's no way that Mrs. Travers would let that one pass!

The acting is superb. The film's charm comes from seeing Walt and the Shermans on screen. But the story itself? Clunky and poorly put together. I'm honestly shocked at the praise it's receiving. I enjoyed it very much for the nostalgia factor, but in order for a film stand out you can't rely on nostalgia alone.

I didn't find it at all clunky and poorly put together. We all loved it including DS 16 and DD 18. Of course, everyone always has their own definition of a "great movie." I find I usually hate the ones most people rave about.

I gave DD the choice today between going to see Saving Mr. Banks or Walking With Dinosaurs and she chose Saving Mr. Banks. If a non-animated movie can hold a 4-year-old's attention for 2 hours, it's good. I thought both the story and the film were incredible. :goodvibes I'm one of those people who will watch a movie once and then not feel the need to watch it again, but I will happily sit down with this one again!

You allowed a 4 year old to choose a PG-13 movie?

You allowed a 4 year old to choose a PG-13 movie?

You do know PG 13 means children under 13 should see this movie with Parental Guidance, right? So unless the 4 y/o was sent in alone it's all good.

PG-13 means a parent should accompany a child under age 13.

My parents took me to see a rated R movie when I was 14.

It's not like the movie is NC17 and the parents snuck them in.

This is an adult movie. I found it an incredible story and would see it again. A child would also see it as an adult movie and be bored out of his/her mind.

Depends on the child I think. My 11-year-old (so not a very young child) adored it. But then, she's interested in Walt Disney. She's loved going in
One Man's Dream since she was seven (she's also both seen and READ Mary Poppins). It takes knowing your kid, I think. It's a quiet and deep sort of movie. There are kids that appreciate that. And there are kids that are bored by that.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. From what I've read here, I think my almost 10 year old would love it & my 8 year old would be bored. Like you said, depends on the child and their personalities are so different!

Saw the movie yesterday with my 12 year old son who usually has poor tolerance for anything other than kids films, and he was completely into the film. But he is a Disneyholic.
We had never even seen Mary Poppins, but came home and rented it on Amazon. Paid attention to some details about MP that we probably would not have had we not seen Saving Mr Banks. Pretty cool.

I can't wait for this open here in Australia. My DD and I saw the preview tonight when we saw Frozen and are both looking forward to it.

I noticed that, too. I figured at that point in the story, she was just tired of correcting everyone.

We saw it yesterday, me, dh, dd17 and ds20, we all loved it!!! We spent a lot of our dinner time talking about it. It was wonderful. I really want to watch Mary Poppins now, but I want to buy the Blu Ray now that it's out, so my poor beat up DVD can have a break.

This has PG-13 rating - is it a fair rating. I know some of the darker issues it deals with, ftr. Would you take kids any younger than that (thinking 8-10 yr olds)?

Just back from seeing it. no, I wouldn't take my 9 year old twin or my 11 year old DS. There are some very dark themes in her childhood that I don't think is appropriate for them at this point. gut wrenching scenes. on the other hand, I loved the movie. one of my favorites from the year. really touched by it...laughed and cried and so happy I went. :)

We went last night and I really loved it. I thought all the actors did an amazing job, and the movie was both very funny in spots and very touching.

I think that now it's so routine now to misuse the pronoun "I" (although it wasn't in 1962) that no one on the film even noticed that it was wrong. I was surprised that Hanks let it go. (As you can tell, it's one of my pet peeves!)

DH and I saw it today and we both loved it. I haven't cried that hard in a movie since The King's Speech. In fact, I'm pretty sure I cried harder in Saving Mr. Banks.

It was absolutely fantastic. And I'll never look at pears the same way again.

We saw it today as well (DH and I). I thought it was very well done and Tom Hanks was amazing (in fact, the entire cast was incredible).

There was clapping at the end and I could hear sobbing from every corner of the (packed) theater.

Mary Poppins is one of my favorite all-time movies. :goodvibes

Saw it on Sunday and LOVED it...so much so that I am hoping to see it again tomorrow. I also just rented "The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story" and it was SO interesting and moving (especially after Saving Mr. Banks). I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed SMB especially for the nostalgia factor.
