This will be our very first cruise and I was wondering how the weather is traveling from San Diego to Catalina/Ensenada in January. Will the pool be too cold to enjoy? Should we pack jackets, or are shorts doable?

Yes. Maybe. Depends.

The pools are heated and if you live in a cooler climate the 60-mid 70s may feel balmy to you. On the other side the evenings can feel a little chilly and need a light jacket if your from a warm climate. The pools are heated so again it just depends on you. The hot tubs will as usual, probably be full.

We just did a Merrytime cruise on Wonder in December and definitely did not go into the pools. We are from San Diego so this wasn’t pool weather to us. It was maybe 68 as a high temp and fairly windy for a good chunk of the cruise. During day shorts were fine, once the sun started going down it was jeans for us on deck. Hoodies for pirate night and fireworks.

We were on Wonder in November during a relatively cold spell and only wore shorts on Cabo day. Otherwise highs were in 60s. When the ship was moving, it was breezy and downright chilly after sunset. Definitely pack jackets.

I agree with the previous posters, and I’m from the UK. Really warm in Cabo, chilly at night on the ship.

I did a cruise from San Francisco to San Diego/Ensenada over Thanksgiving in 2021 and definitely wished I had brought more warm clothing. I thought 'cruise' and brought mostly Caribbean cruise stuff. It was alright during the day, but definitely warm (and windy) at night.

March can vary. 60s or 70s for highs. They can start telling with some accuracy maybe 7-10 days out. One March I remember nice warm beach days but that’s not the norm.

We are taking our third cruise out of San Diego this month as well. First was in Nov (San Diego - Ensenada) second in Dec (San Diego - Cabo San Lucas).

Pack warmer clothes than you think you’ll need! Nights are chilly and the wind can be strong on the decks. I only needed shorts one day last month. I wore capris and pants the remainder of the time.

I packed sweaters and sweatshirts and was so glad I did! We sail next Friday (1/13) and I’ll be packing warm clothes!

Also - I had wished I had a small umbrella because it rained more than we anticipated.

This time of year we can get heat waves (Santa Anas), but mostly it's chilly especially near the coast. Bring sweaters, or at least layers! Highs might get to low 70s, but low 70s in SD is not like low 70s in other parts of the country. OTOH, I still wear my flip flops everyday.

March you will typically need to go down to Cabo or even Puerta Vallearta for consistently warm weather. It could be warm or it could be in the 50s or 60s in March. The key factor is that the West Coast is dominated by the Alaska current which (not surprisingly) flows south from Alaska along the coast. In March that water is COLD. This is also why you get highs in the 50s in San Francisco in June and July and frequently run into tourists in San Francisco shivering in shorts and t-shirts on the 4th of July. To cut this explanation short it will likely be chilly in March. At least until you get into the bay in Cabo or all the way South to PV. Warm weather in this part of the country is more likely in September-October.
