Salty Dog at HH

This place is recommended often on this board. I went to their website and it mentions activites for kids such as tye dying shirts. Thought it might be a fun thing for the kids to do before or after dinner. Does anyone know anything about this, such as when these activities are offered? Thanks.

Salty Dog is not exactly at Disney's Hilton Head Resort. It is on Hilton Head Island, but clear at the other end of the island. We went on our last trip, had a drink, walked around the shops. It's a cool place and a lot of fun, but frankly, it's a bar. I guess if you stretch it, you could call it a bar/restaurant. Great drinks, open air, tropical music, some seafood and pizza. Lots of little shops right close by. They have a store with their own tshirts and other logo items. I didn't see any "activities" for kids, but then I wasn't looking. There was a fun pair of parrots to talk to and watch.

The website said there was an inside and outside bar and an inside restaurant. The menu was quite extensive and there is a nice kids menu. I just thought any additional activities/entertainment would be a nice addition. Well, I guess I'll find out when I get there. I did realize it's in the Sea Pines area. Thanks.

JFI, Salty Dog is in the Sea Pines resort. You will have to pay $5 to enter as a visitor and they will give you a one day pass.

Not sure if the cost has gone up, this was last year's rate.

Salty Dog is a fun restaurant right on the water. Not the ocean, more like the wetlands. During the summer months there is face painting and balloon animals almost every night for the kids. They have a great female clown that comes out and hosts. I'm not sure about the rest of the year.

I believe the other restaurant there is called Lancaster's? If you're looking for seafood, I thought there selection was quite good. Menus for both restaurants are posted outside so you can decide which fits you best.

Also check out "The Old Oyster Factory". I believe you can see it from the Disney property.

Just to clarify a bit, the $5 admission to Sea Pines is per car, not per person. Also, parking in Harbourtown or South Beach is pretty close to impossible. You're better off entering Sea Pines, parking right inside the gate, and taking the free shuttle to either of those areas. You will still have to pay the $5 at the gate, and the guard can give you more info on the shuttle.

Both Harbourtown and South Beach will be very crowded during the summer months. Be prepared to wait! That's why they have all those activities out there! It can be a lot of fun, but not if you are tired and hungry and expecting to have dinner right away!

BTW, you can pretty much expect to wait at most of the family-type restaurants on HH during the high season. They don't take reservations. Either get there right when they open for dinner, or be prepared to eat a little later than you might have anticipated.

Don't let that scare you off from visiting Hilton Head though -- it's a great place, as long as you know what to expect!!!

There is both an outside cafe and an inside restaurant. We've dined inside the last several years and it's my DS9 favorite restaurant on HH. All year long he looks forward to ordering their onion loaf, his absolute favorite. It's breaded, very thin sliced onions, dipped in a batter and deep fried.

Both our DS's ordered from the kids menu and were pleasantly surprised to find out their dinners were served inside a frisbee. Something to take back to the beach to play with.

As others have said, there are no reservations and the wait can be long. We try to get there before they open to wait in line for first seating. A couple weeks back, we didn't and waited for a good 50 minutes for a table.

We did see the tie dye booth but I tried to avoid that. It's right by the parking area.

They also have a webcam. My kids get a kick out of standing for their picture and then coming home and seeing themselves on the internet. I believe they store the pictures for a month at a time. Make sure to look for the yellow foot prints as to where to stand.

Going down to South Beach in Sea Pines is great!! One of our favorite resaurants are there...The Lands End Tavern - they used to also reimburse you the $5. I didn't see that ad the last time though. So there is more that just the Salty Dog resaurant in the area....all walking distance. It is set up like a New England Marina....have some drinks and hang out while you wait for your dinner. A great time. My kids love it. Every year we load up on Salty Dog merchandise!!!!

Thanks for all the good tips...particularly parking inside the gate and taking the shuttle! It seems like it will be lots of fun and waiting never bothers me when I'm on vacation. We shift to laid back mode and go with the flow! Love the kids meal in the frisbee idea...that'll be a big hit if they still do it! Thanks again!
