Sailing the Skyliner: Life is the Bubbles on Spring Break - A March 2024 Trip Report

Meeting Ariel

We reached the Ariel queue at 3:32pm. The standby wait was posted at 60 minutes, so I was happy to have a LL. We still ended up waiting 24 minutes.

Ariel is always one of our favorite meets. She noted we had the whole school of fish with us. She asked if the girls were sisters and talked about her six sisters. She said they sometimes like to match like my girls. She asked what their favorite color was so they could help pick the next flowers Ariel and her sisters would wear in their hair. They picked purple (DD7) and teal (DD9).

We ended up with 45 pictures of Ariel from the box camera, which was more than most meets. It takes a picture every 5 seconds so we must have been there for almost 4 minutes. She took a lot of time to interact with the girls, which was sweet (but I could also understand why the line was so long).

After 2.5 minutes of chatting with the girls, Ariel invited the rest of us in for a picture. Most characters insisted on getting the full group picture first, but I appreciated the girls had their special time with Ariel first.

Ariel7.jpg

Thankfully the camera caught hugs at the end. Not all of the cameras did (and maybe Ariel knew how long to hold the hug to ensure we caught these; if so, it was appreciated!).

Ariel8.jpg
Ariel9.jpg

Overall, it was another great meet with one of our favorite characters!

Ariel10.jpg

Ariel is Andi’s favorite princess and she loved meeting her on all our trips!
She was always very sweet and fun to talk with!

It's been a very long time since we met Ariel. Sounds like she really gave the girls quality time and luckily the box camera caught it.

Cold Treats and Meeting Mickey Mouse

Our next priority was to find a cold, sweet treat to enjoy in the shade. I knew I wanted the I Lava You Float at Sunshine Tree Terrace. It was one of my favorite treats on our last trip in 2022. We arrived at 4:08pm and my mom and the girls went to find a table at Tortuga’s Tavern. It’s a bit of a walk but I’m pretty sure it’s the closest place with plenty of tables in the shade.

I should have placed a mobile order in advance because the line was long. But mobile orders were 20-30 minutes out by the time we got there, and I estimated the line was going to be about 20 minutes, so decided it was better just to wait in line. We waited 24 minutes, so maybe it would have been better to mobile order and come back after all.

We placed an order for 4 I Lava You Floats, 1 chocolate/vanilla swirl ice cream and 1 Root Beer Float. I used 6 snack credits, bringing us to a total of 17 of 32 used. Our total for the food would have been $43.92.

I spotted big boxes of pop rocks while we waited for our food.

Ice Cream1.jpg

It was a hot day, so I took a picture of the I Lava You Floats as they were first coming out, before they melted too much. These were Fanta Strawberry Soda and Passion Fruit flavor served with DOLE Whip Orange and topped with Popping Candy, $7.29. A great use of a snack credit!

Ice Cream2.jpg

Pat ordered the Barq’s Root Beer Float served with your choice of DOLE Whip or soft serve, $6.29. He went with vanilla soft serve.

Ice Cream3.jpg

Pat’s mom wanted the chocolate/vanilla swirl soft serve, $5.79.

Ice Cream4.jpg

We struggled with getting the floats and soft serve back to the tables at Tortuga Tavern without them melting too much. It’s truly a struggle when it’s a hot day and there are a lot of crowds to navigate. But we made it! The girls loved these floats.

Ice Cream5.jpg
Ice Cream6.jpg

It's still one of my favorite treats in all of WDW! After sitting for a while we walked back toward Main Street for our next LL, to meet Mickey Mouse. He was only posting a 20-minute wait when we arrived at 5:22pm, but our LL was for 5:40pm so we could not tap in until 5:35pm.

I used the extra time to swap out my Fuel Rod at a shop on Main Street. I was surprised that the Fuel Rod had run out of battery before fully charging my phone but was thrilled that I could exchange it for another one for free. It was super easy and quick to exchange, you just drop the rod in a slot facing the way pictured on the machine and a new one comes out.

Around 5:25pm the Move It! Shake It! Parade came by. I didn’t realize there was an evening parade, but a lot of people had lined up for it. The girls watched from the porch of the building where Mickey meets while we waited another 10 minutes for our LL time.

Parade.jpg

As soon as the parade ended, around 5:30pm, people started streaming in to meet Mickey. The wait time jumped from 20 minutes to 45 minutes. We eagerly tapped in right at 5:35pm, 5 minutes before our window officially started. As a learning for the future, get in Mickey’s line while the parade is happening! We waited 11 minutes to see Mickey.

Mickey Mouse1.jpg

I think he was trying to point out that they were matching? We called out yes, they’re sisters.

Mickey Mouse2.jpg
Mickey Mouse3.jpg

Continued in the next post!

You're floats look so good. I haven't had one yet, but maybe we'll get one next week. I usually get a Dole Whip.

Meeting Mickey & Under the Sea

In hindsight, I realize that Mickey was asking the rest of us to come join him, but we thought he was trying to get a hug from the girls at first. He had signed DD9’s book but not DD7’s book and I usually like to get those signing pictures with just the girls (while I’m taking video), so it was a little chaotic. I’ve since watched TikTok videos with character attendants who explained that the characters want the full group pictures first, then individual pictures, so Mickey was probably trying to encourage that. But we didn’t get the hint, so he quickly shifted to sign DD7’s book next.

Mickey Mouse4.jpg

I was glad it was just the girls in these pictures, it makes for sweet pictures, and I love having video of the interactions.

Mickey Mouse5.jpg

We got our full family picture next.

Mickey Mouse6.jpg

Then our family of four. Pat and I seem to be looking at the wrong place for the camera.

Mickey Mouse7.jpg

Then the girls.

Mickey Mouse8.jpg

The girls finally got their Mickey hug, and I got one too.

Mickey Mouse9.jpg

I had picked up a LL for Under the Sea next, so we geared up to head back to Fantasyland. It was a lot of walking back and forth this day to take advantage of the LLs. As we passed down Main Street there was another parade happening with high school marching bands. At the end of the line, a cymbal player dropped their cymbal, and it went rolling down the street. The cymbal player just kept marching as though nothing had happened! Thankfully someone ran after the cymbal and delivered back it to the marcher.

We tapped in at Under the Sea at 6:02pm and were on the ride 6 minutes later. There was a 50-minute stand-by wait at that time. The girls both went with Grammas for this one, so Pat and I got to ride together.

Under the Sea1.jpg

We were stopped a few times on this ride, but our longest stop put me and Pat right in front of Ariel, with this view. There are many worse places we could have been stuck!

Under the Sea2.jpg

Funny enough, we got stopped at almost the exact same spot later in the trip. We took the pause as an opportunity for a family picture.

Under the Sea3.jpg

We were almost off when we were stopped once more in the fireworks room. No complaints from us!

Under the Sea4.jpg

The ride is supposed to be 7 minutes, but we were on for 11 minutes with all the stops. We checked out the carousel after leaving this ride. It had been down every time we walked by this day and was still down at this time. So, we were off to our dinner reservation.

I’ve since watched TikTok videos with character attendants who explained that the characters want the full group pictures first, then individual pictures,
Oh interesting! I would’ve thought individual pictures with the kids first, as that’s what I personally care about the most, then group pictures if there’s time.

But it looks like a great meet with Mickey either way, and a fun ride on Under the Sea!

Oh interesting! I would’ve thought individual pictures with the kids first, as that’s what I personally care about the most, then group pictures if there’s time.
I would have thought that too! I can't be the only parent who wants to take video of the kids first meeting the characters, before we jump in for a picture. I haven't seen an explanation just yet of why they want the full group photos first. A few character attendants did ask that we do a full group photo first before just the girls, but other characters (like Ariel) seemed happy to greet the girls first.

Skipper Canteen

Skipper Canteen has been our long-time favorite for a sit-down meal at Magic Kingdom. The food can be hit or miss but is good more often than not, the servers are usually fun, and we love the theming and all the things to look at in the restaurant. My parents had never been before, so I was excited to see what they thought. We arrived at 6:26pm, a minute late for our 6:25pm reservation. We didn’t have to wait very long to be sat.

We’ve been sat in the main dining room (the Mess Hall) and the S.E.A. room a couple of times, but this was the first time we were sat in the Jungle Room. Our skipper was light on the jokes this time, but he was attentive and helpful. We started with our drink order. I have always leaned toward the wine in the past and then wished I ordered the Kungaloosh beer after tasting Pat’s. So, this time I went with a Kungaloosh too.

Skipper1.jpg

This is an African-inspired deep amber ale brewed exclusively for Walt Disney World, $11. I really like the spices in this.

When we mentioned a few of us were vegetarian, our server shared that the Pao de Queijo (cheese bread served with cream cheese and chimichurri sauce) on the secret menu were vegetarian. I had already read/heard about these and was planning to order them anyway, but it was nice he shared about them. I didn’t know about these on previous trips! So of course, we placed an order.

Skipper3.jpg

My dad doesn’t like much cheese or dairy, so he skipped these, but the rest of us loved them. The girls said they tasted like goldfish. We almost placed a second order of them, but knew we had a lot more food still coming. In hindsight, we probably should have placed a second order, because we ended up waiting another 25 minutes before our main entrees came out. We received our entrees nearly an hour after we were seated, which I think is unusual at most table service restaurants where they’re trying to turn the tables over quickly.

I ordered my usual, the Curried Vegetable Crew Stew (a favorite of the crew stew crew, especially Stu, seasoned vegetables and pineapple tofu in a house-made curry sauce served with coconut rice, $23). The quality of this dish has varied over the years but this was a very good version. My only complaint was that it was very light on the protein (tofu), I think there were literally only 6 bites of tofu. Even with food prices today where they are, compare that to the portions of meat below; I think Disney can do better. That said, the tofu and rice were both flavored nicely and I ate almost everything on my plate.

Skipper2.jpg

The girls ordered their typical mac n’ cheese, both with fruit on the side. This came with 2 sides, for the 2nd side they each chose a dessert; DD7 picked the Volcano cake and DD9 picked the chocolate-covered banana pieces.

Skipper4.jpg
Skipper5.jpg
Skipper6.jpg

My MIL ordered the “Tastes like Chicken” Because it is! This was crispy-fried chicken with chili-soy glaze, Jasmine rice, and pickled vegetable slaw, $28.

Skipper7.jpg

Pat ordered the Sustainable Fish, listed as “Not Pirahnha” served over bok choy, lotus root, bell peppers, and shiitake mushrooms in a light ginger-lemon grass broth, $32. He thinks it might have been mahi but doesn’t remember for sure. We’re pretty sure my dad ordered the same thing (I’m missing a picture).

Skipper8.jpg

My mom (or my dad? We can’t remember) ordered what we think is the Dr. Falls Signature Grilled Steak (marinated hanger steak lomo saltado-style with roasted peppers, onions, tomatoes and aji Amarillo aioli, $38), though from the picture I think it might be the “Hardy Har Char” Siu Pork tenderloins, which says it’s served with house-pickled vegetables and Jasmine Rice, $29.

Skipper9.jpg

No one remembers ordering the steak or pork or whatever that mystery meat is, but some of them remember “tasting” it. I clearly should have taken better notes or pictures, but the fact that the adults could not remember who ordered what tells me that these entrees were not especially memorable, though everyone thought they had a good meal. So, take that as you will.

For this meal, Pat and the girls were on the dining plan, and I was not, having used my table service credit for my more expensive meal at Rose and Crown instead. Therefore, Pat had dessert included and ordered the Coconut Bar with Pineapple-Basil Compote and Vanilla Cream (Vanilla chiffon cake and coconut and lime-white chocolate ganache, $9).

Skipper10.jpg

Dessert came out 30 minutes after our main entrees, just before 8:00pm. We were running low on time for our upcoming LLs (Big Thunder Mountain and Peter Pan), so we asked for the check while we ate quickly. I love the coconut bar dessert! Overall, it was another great meal at Skipper Canteen, and this will continue to be a must-do on future trips.

The total for 1 adult TS (4 of 16 credits used) and the 2 kid TS (4 of 16 credits used) came to $79.88 with tax. This brought our running total value on the dining plan to $748.86 of the $1,746 we paid for it.

That's really slow service. I wonder if they were having an off night?? Disney usually wants to turn tables MUCH faster than that.

Skipper Canteen is a family favorite for us too. Dennis would eat here every trip if we had the time.

I'm thinking the mystery meal is the Pork. I've had it before and that was my first thought when I saw the picture.

We love Skipper Canteen too, though we also definitely have had some misses.

100 agree - it's soooo good! And I also am always debating on getting a second order :D

I thought the same thing! They usually want the table and would be moving our meal along quicker. I'm not sure what happened, but definitely an off night for pacing.

I think we've eaten there just about every trip! And thank you for identifying the mystery meat!
We love Skipper Canteen too, though we also definitely have had some misses.
Even with the misses it's still my favorite sit-down at MK!

Big Thunder Mountain, Fireworks & Tea Cups

I had booked two LLs for after dinner. Pat, his mom, the girls and I were going to ride Big Thunder Mountain. My parents didn’t want to ride BTM (and I was actually shocked both girls agreed to ride it), so I got them a LL for Peter Pan at the same time, which is one of my dad’s favorite rides.

We got in the LL queue for BTM at 8:12pm. The posted wait time was 55 minutes, but we waited 9 minutes. My parents were already off Peter Pan before we got on our ride, so they must not have walked right on. TP says the posted wait at that time for Peter Pan was 65 minutes and actual wait time on stand-by was 50 minutes, so the LL really came in handy this day.

BTM.jpg

I rode with DD9, DD7 sat in between Pat and Grammas behind us. Going up the hill, we felt the emergency brakes and stopped hard. This always seems to happen on BTM. I never mind because it’s a great opportunity for pictures.

BTM2.jpg

As I was taking this, DD9 was begging me to put my camera away, nervous we would move at any moment. She was right, we weren’t stopped for long. I always forget what a thrilling ride this is! I had described it to DD7 as a “fast train” earlier in the day. I didn’t remember any drops or anything too scary, but I obviously didn’t remember the ride well enough. DD7 did not like the ride. I just asked her what she thought of it, and she gave me a thumbs down. At the time, she was mad at me for having convinced her to ride it and I felt so bad! She definitely could have gone with my parents to Peter Pan instead. DD9 loved it though and wanted to ride it again later in the trip.

Our plan was to meet my parents in Fantasyland to watch the fireworks at 8:30pm. I’d really love to see the show from in front of the castle again someday, but with Spring Break crowds, we didn’t want to find spots as early as we would have needed to, and it turned out it would have been a challenge since our meal took over 1.5 hours, longer than we expected it to. We were fine to watch from behind the castle, where we thought the crowds would be a little lighter.

We were off the ride and walking to meet my parents in Fantasyland to watch the fireworks when they started at 8:30pm. We were in Liberty Square and continued to walk through Fantasyland. My parents texted they had found benches where we could sit across from the carousel and PhilharMagic, but the crowd got much thicker when we reached the front of Pinocchio Village Haus so we decided to stop there to watch the show with the crowd and find my parents afterwards. I was sorry we didn’t all get to watch together, but it was a great show.

One thing to note if you’re going to watch the fireworks behind the castle is that you’ll have to keep turning your head back and forth. Some fireworks come from the castle itself and on either side of it, and others are further back, behind Pinocchio Haus. If you’re standing in the middle, it’s a lot of head turning, but still a fun and moving experience.

Fireworks.jpg
Fireworks1.jpg
Fireworks2.jpg

After the fireworks ended our group needed a bathroom, so we walked back to the Tangled bathrooms. I checked the TP app to decide what to do next and saw that the Mad Tea Party was posting a 5-minute wait with an expected 4-minute wait. The girls had been wanting to ride all day, so I suggested we head there quickly.

I had no interest in riding the teacups, and neither did Pat or my dad, but thankfully both grandmas were willing to ride with the girls. They’re technically old enough to ride on their own now, but they wanted an adult and both grandmas wanted to go with them. It was fun to watch their bonding time. While the wait was posted at 5 minutes at 9:01pm when they got in line, they ended up waiting 16 minutes, likely due to the post-fireworks crowd.

Teacups1.jpg

The girls went so fast! I got some great video of the four of them flying by and posted it with the caption “Brave Grandmas” because I was glad I wasn’t in there! When they got off, DD7 told me they should rename the place “DIZZY World” – it took me a few minutes to get the joke, and then I couldn’t stop laughing.

Teacups2.jpg

They had a great time! I had two more LLs stacked for us, one for Dumbo starting at 9:20pm and one for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at 9:25pm. The park was open until 11:00pm this evening but I figured we’d go on those rides and then head out for the night. After all, I had been up since 5:30am and we left our resort rooms at 6:30am. And this was day four of early mornings. We had no plans to close the park down. So just two more rides, right?

Dumbo, Tomorrowland Speedway & Buzz

We tapped into Dumbo at 9:25pm. There was a posted 15-minute wait, and we waited 11 minutes, so the LL wasn’t super helpful for this one. I wished we had made it here during the day for some of the classic pictures we get on every trip, but it was really pretty lit up at night. The grandparents decided to skip this one.

Dumbo1.jpg
Dumbo2.jpg
Dumbo3.jpg

On our way to Buzz we saw that the Tomorrowland Speedway was posting a 10-minute wait. We had never taken the girls on that ride, it’s always been a “maybe” ride that we ran out of time for. We asked the girls if they wanted to stop and they did. The grandmas decided to skip this one. We waited exactly 10 minutes.

Speedway1.jpg

I took the solo ride. I forgot how hard it is to steer these things! I was bumping back and forth and thinking to myself that the grandmas were smart to skip this one. But it was also pretty at night

Speedway2.jpg

The girls loved being able to drive. It was almost 10:00pm when we got off, and I needed another Fuel Rod. We stopped by a store in Tomorrowland and got my 3rd Fuel Rod of the day. I wouldn’t normally rely on something like this for a charger, but I was realizing how handy it was to have the ability to swap these out, and there were enough stations around the park that made this a convenient option.

We got in the LL queue for Buzz at 10:04pm. The posted wait time was 35 minutes, we waited 8 minutes. The LL line looked really long, so that was a better wait than I expected.

Buzz1.jpg

I had read tips ahead of time to become a galactic hero and was determined to achieve that rank. I found the first target easily and hit it 2-3 times, but I couldn’t find the others. I scored 509,300, which was only halfway there, but for the first time ever, I beat Pat. I think he scored in the 300ks. He couldn’t believe I had beat him until I admitted I had done some research. I let him in on the targets we were watching for before we rode this again later in the trip.

So hard to steer! Occasionally I feel like I've cracked the code (like just don't steer, just let it do it's thing) but then I try again and I bounce all over the place. *shrugs* adds a "fun" element of randomness to the ride :D

oh nice! The LL for Buzz often backs up super far (or at least looks really long) - nice that you only waited 8 minutes.

Nice! Congrats! Finding those high value targets is such a high :D and you're so nice to share with Pat :D I'm curious how you'll do later in the trip!

I am getting caught up! And back to the boards... I had quotes and lost them. ;( Sounds like a great night.

We love Skipper Canteen. We need to get back, it's been awhile for us.

Yes, this one always seems to get backed up - the LL room seems to hold a lot of people and the line still seems to go outside.
and you're so nice to share with Pat :D
I know... I just wanted him to think I was really good for a minute there 😅
I'm curious how you'll do later in the trip!
I'll share a spoiler... he beat me the next time around!

Aw, glad you're still here! I am very behind in reading other reports too, I need to get caught up. It was a really fun evening and not quite over yet!

People Mover & MK Summary

We all loved the People Mover on our last trip and had not made it yet today. Although it was later than we planned to stay out, we decided to do just one more ride, on the People Mover. I think the posted wait time was 10 minutes, but we only waited 5 minutes. The walking track stopped abruptly when the rest of the ride did too while we were in line. We were on at 10:25pm and split up into two cars.

People Mover1.jpg

People Mover3.jpg

It was the perfect way to end what had been a perfect day at Magic Kingdom.

It was after 10:40pm when we were making our way back down Main Street, and it was lit up the same as it had been when we arrived before sunrise that morning.

Main Street at Night.jpg

As we were approaching the exit, I remembered that I needed to stop at the PhotoPass help line to get pictures we were missing from four rides that day. If it hadn’t been so many pictures, I probably wouldn’t have stopped, but I really wanted those pictures. I was in line at 10:47pm and we didn’t leave the park until 11:07pm, so it took about 20 minutes. Finding my pictures went quickly because I use the notes app during the day to track times (for this report) and I take a ton of pictures so I had time stamps and could say fairly quickly what time we should have had a picture taken. But I heard CMs telling other people they should take pictures when they are about to get on a ride, to have a time stamp for the future.

They weren’t able to find two of the pictures and gave me a number to call later on. Pirates had a 9-minute gap so they didn’t think it was likely I was going to get that one, and they were correct. I couldn’t recover Pirates or the picture from HM for Pat and his mom, even when we got back home. Disney told me later the camera had an issue, so neither of those pictures were captured.

We completed an early entry rope drop to close day at Magic Kingdom! We were exhausted but happy. DD9 had fallen asleep while waiting for me at the PhotoPass stop and DD7 was almost asleep.

We reached the bus stop at 11:12pm. There was a bus at the station, but it was already full. We waited 5 minutes for another AoA bus to arrive. That bus was taking awhile while it struggled to load a scooter, and we could see there was another scooter to load after that one before they could fill the bus. There were quite a few people ahead of us still, so I didn’t think it was likely we were going to get seats. It had been a 17-hour day at this point and we were feeling it. Another bus pulled up 5 minutes later at 11:22pm and I was SO grateful when the CM managing the line ushered us to get on that next bus, while the first was still working to load the scooters. We were the first on, so we had no issue finding seats. We put the girls on our laps to open up seats for others who needed them.

We were back at our resort at 11:41pm and back to our room at 11:50pm. A 17-hour day after 4 early mornings had completely wiped us out (or at least, had wiped me out). This was the first day we got back to our room and the room had been cleaned. We also realized we had not done Wordle yet (thanks to DD9 reminding us; she and Pat were doing it together each day), so we scrambled to get that done in the last minutes of the day. Wordle resets to a new word at midnight.

As tired as I was, I also felt like I desperately needed a shower, so I pulled myself together for that. It was nearly 1:00am before I eventually crawled into bed to sleep. I was so grateful we had a rest day coming up the next day and would be able to sleep in.
