Hi ladies!
Allie - I can't believe your klutzy luck! Your poor knee. I think this stuff happens whenever you use a muscle in a way that it's not expecting. They just take time to acclimate to the new motion, the new demands.
I have to say that Joint Juice sounds more recreational than theraputic, if you know what I mean.
I was taking those glucosamine/chondroitin supplements for a while. It did seem like they helped a lot with my formerly crunchy knees, so hopefully you'll get some benefit as well.
You've got the idea with the ice bath. It's a few inches of cold water with a couple dozen ice cubes dumped in.
c4m - the idea is that the ice really brings down inflammation a LOT, allowing things to settle down and heal. A warm bath definitely sounds better, more enjoyable, more relaxing, and if you have tight muscles, it might be theraputic as well, but if you have an injury with inflammation, it would most likely cause expansion of that inflammation and potentially slow down the healing process. Of course, heat can also bring more blood into an injured area which can help healing. Sometimes the recommendation is to alternate heat and ice, even!
The magic purple lotion is something I get from my chirorpactor called "Anesthall" I've never ordered from this company, but here's the first link that showed up http://www.creekwaterwoolworks.com/Anesthall.html
If I have a complaining muscle, oftentimes I put this minty stuff on it at night and in the morning, it's all eased up. Amazing. I like it better than Biofreeze, which is very popular with a lot of people too. I don't use anything for run of the mill muscle soreness, pretty much I get out the lotion when I've got an acute spot or pull.
The shoe question. I am sure the more experienced runners have better developed opinions about this - I think that serious runners tend to reserve their current pair (or pairs) of running shoes solely for running and may retire them to daily use after they are mostly worn out. They say 400 miles to a pair of shoes, I think? Kim and I were figuring on shoes lasting about a year, but if you are wearing them to walk in as well, that will put more miles on them faster. I think they may also wear differently with walking because the stride is different. I try to reserve my running shoes for running, but with my walking shoes being injury-related this week, I have had to go with the running shoes a couple of days.
Finally, it's so great that you are loving the running. It's a little more work with the extra weight, but I have probably 30-40 pounds left to go, and I LOVE it as well. It is a lot easier than when I was 30 pounds heavier than I am now, and I am sure it would be even more fun if I were another 30 pounds lighter, but it really is amazing what wonders the training is able to work, even with the extra weight still on board!
I am back from Kung Fu night and am not any the worse for wear. 6 mile run for me tomorrow, with any luck!
