Runners UNITE! We've graduated C25K, so let's keep on going!

Hi ladies!

Allie - I can't believe your klutzy luck! Your poor knee. I think this stuff happens whenever you use a muscle in a way that it's not expecting. They just take time to acclimate to the new motion, the new demands.

I have to say that Joint Juice sounds more recreational than theraputic, if you know what I mean. I was taking those glucosamine/chondroitin supplements for a while. It did seem like they helped a lot with my formerly crunchy knees, so hopefully you'll get some benefit as well.

You've got the idea with the ice bath. It's a few inches of cold water with a couple dozen ice cubes dumped in.

c4m - the idea is that the ice really brings down inflammation a LOT, allowing things to settle down and heal. A warm bath definitely sounds better, more enjoyable, more relaxing, and if you have tight muscles, it might be theraputic as well, but if you have an injury with inflammation, it would most likely cause expansion of that inflammation and potentially slow down the healing process. Of course, heat can also bring more blood into an injured area which can help healing. Sometimes the recommendation is to alternate heat and ice, even!

The magic purple lotion is something I get from my chirorpactor called "Anesthall" I've never ordered from this company, but here's the first link that showed up http://www.creekwaterwoolworks.com/Anesthall.html

If I have a complaining muscle, oftentimes I put this minty stuff on it at night and in the morning, it's all eased up. Amazing. I like it better than Biofreeze, which is very popular with a lot of people too. I don't use anything for run of the mill muscle soreness, pretty much I get out the lotion when I've got an acute spot or pull.

The shoe question. I am sure the more experienced runners have better developed opinions about this - I think that serious runners tend to reserve their current pair (or pairs) of running shoes solely for running and may retire them to daily use after they are mostly worn out. They say 400 miles to a pair of shoes, I think? Kim and I were figuring on shoes lasting about a year, but if you are wearing them to walk in as well, that will put more miles on them faster. I think they may also wear differently with walking because the stride is different. I try to reserve my running shoes for running, but with my walking shoes being injury-related this week, I have had to go with the running shoes a couple of days.

Finally, it's so great that you are loving the running. It's a little more work with the extra weight, but I have probably 30-40 pounds left to go, and I LOVE it as well. It is a lot easier than when I was 30 pounds heavier than I am now, and I am sure it would be even more fun if I were another 30 pounds lighter, but it really is amazing what wonders the training is able to work, even with the extra weight still on board!

I am back from Kung Fu night and am not any the worse for wear. 6 mile run for me tomorrow, with any luck!

Thanks for the tips on ice baths and running shoes! Ice baths will be my motivation to prevent injury :rotfl2:

Corinna- Thanks for the shoe advice, I never thought that walking would wear them differently.

Leslie, I also go on coolrunning.com I like to keep track of my runs and graph my results. I also like mapmyrun.com to check out new runs and find my mileage. Last weekend I was visiting my parents and had mapped out a run before getting down there. It will also work as my pre-thanksgiving run. :)

I'm on my way out to run in the cold (45 degrees) I'm hoping the cold will make me pick up the pace!

Katie

Hey Katie - how did it go today out there? Did you enjoy the cooler temps? For myself, I definitely appreciated the less SWEAT aspect of the cooler temps, though mine were warmer than yours by a good margin!

I had just about ideal weather here today. It was about 60 and partly cloudy. Very nice. I was able to charge right up ALL the hills. I think there are 3 massive hills (and a couple of little ones) on the loop I ran today, each of which has forced me to a walk in the past, but not today! :yay: The reduced temp helps a lot, but I felt new power in my legs today, the potential to go faster. I still was not significantly faster than I have been in the past on these long, slow runs, but maybe a little faster. :-) The new music on my shuffle was also quite welcome, but I was glad that I only had one earphone in as I was passed rather suddenly by a bicycle and did manage to hear him before he was passing by!

I am thinking that my mileage goal for the month is probably a bit on the HIGH side.

Hey girls,
I do like the cold weather running but its Thursday and I haven't been out since Sunday:mad:
I'm worried that the Holiday crunch is just around the corner and it will become harder and harder to get out there and run.

How do you gals do it? Juggle work, keep a "liveable" house, take care of kids and manage to get in a run?

Katie

:wave2: Just popping in real quick - I haven't been doing much of ANYTHING this month! I did one 1.81 mile run a couple days ago and Pilates this morning, but other than that, I've been "sprinting" on my Nano (500 words in 20 minutes!) and settling in with my family.

My sister LOVES ice baths, by the way. She's a physical therapist and she definitely thinks they're the best thing for sore legs. I'm still not brave enough to try it. :rolleyes1

Hey there guys!! Remember me? :confused3 ;)

I finally got that cortisone shot today. It actually wasn't as bad (pain-wise) as I thought, so that was good. The ortho suggested I continue to ice/stretch twice a day and see how I'm feeling in a week. If I feel good - then I can run!! He said no long runs (he doesn't know me very well, does he? :rotfl: My long runs are like 3 or 4 miles. )

But the plan is, next week - to get out there. Most definitely more walking than running and at a slow pace. What's most important to me right now is to get MOVING!! I've been sedentary for too long now.

I'll keep you guys posted!

How's everyone else doin?

Welcome back! I am also on the injured list- heel pain and sciatica so we'll both be going slow.
Maybe we should change our thread name to "C25Kers in Recovery":rotfl2:
What's your plan to get started? I'm thinking of doing my usual route (3.5ml) but walking at least 1/2 if that feels OK. I got the Dr.s OK to do whatever feels good.

Hi Kim - how could we forget???

Add me to the pathetic list. It's been it seems like forever since I ran. I don't think I've mentioned my chest-flutters here. I occasionally have some sort of weird sensation in my chest with heavy exertion and I've started to think I should get it checked out, so I go to my primary doctor on Thursday and will maybe get a referral from him? I also have some blistery callouses on my toes from this crazy Disney trip. They feel better today, so I am going to do a couple of treadmill miles nice and easy after I pick up my older kid from school. That is the theory anyhow. I have a 5K in 2 weeks. :scared: But as Austin said last night "Ach, it's JUST a 5K." :)

Katie - yikes! Sciatica! Heel pain! I'm sorry to hear it. I hope the ramping back up goes well for you. Sounds like you've got a good plan.

Kim, hope the cortisone shot does the trick and you're running circles around the rest of us again soon! I am still holding out hope for 2009.....

Well, I am still nursing my injuries here too. I tried running last week, and my knee didn't hurt while running, but it sure did all day! I may have to break down and go to the Dr. I am thinking about just going to an ortho. instead of my family practice Dr. I know she would probably just send me to an ortho. anyway, so I ought to just save the $30 copay, and just give it to the ortho. :rolleyes1 We go in just over a month, and I am getting worried. :scared: I am beginning to wonder if I will ever be able to run again. :sad2:

Allie, you are breaking my heart here. Your poor knee! Can you just go straight to an ortho? That sounds like a pretty good bet, if so. I can't believe your race is one month away. There is still hope, though. Is walking bothering you at this point or is it just the running? I am still sending out speedy recovery vibes, for all the good they'll do. :goodvibes

I can't believe we all got "benched" at once. Crazy!

Hi everyone! :wave2:
I am new to the boards and my story is over on my blog.
I walked the TOT 13k and I just finished a local Turkey Trot 5k.I missed the sing up for the AK 5k, but I am already sing up for the Minnie Marathon weekend.:thumbsup2
I have been working up to running.I can walk a pace at 15:28 right now. With some running in it.I just have a hard time with my breathing. Any advice??:confused3

I there Rae! Welcome to our little corner of WISH. Wasn't the ToT just a super-fun race? I'm planning on the Minnie as well, but haven't registered yet. Which of the races are you going to do?

As for working up to running, it sounds like you are doing a great job. The way we all did it was with the C25K program which basically has you doing 3x a week with each week building the length of time you are able to run. We'd be happy to point you in the direction of that program if you are interested. Otherwise, you can do the same thing yourself at your own pace if that suits you more. I liked the structure of the program, but different people have different preferences. You can start with however long you are able to run now and increase it gradually. Doing it this way, your breathing eventually stops being an issue because your heart and lungs and circulatory system all become more efficient as you train. I saw something that says that you actually lay down extra capilaries when you increase your aerobic training. To a point, anyhow. So as your system becomes more efficient, you don't have to breathe as hard to get the oxygen your body needs.

The other thing is to make sure you aren't working too hard. You don't want to be exercising at a pace where you can't get out sort of choppy sentences, if you know what I mean? Some huffing and puffing is OK, but if you can't talk, you have to slow down. The speed comes with time as well. Or so I'm told. :rolleyes1

I'm not sure if that answers your question or not.....

As for my running this week, I am back in the game, friends. I just did 4 miles on the treadmill a little while ago. I am always such a glutton for punishment, aren't I? I meant to do 2, maybe 3. The first 2.5 were tough, I won't deny it. But then after that, the music was good and I felt OK, and I thought that well, I won't get to 50 miles this month, not losing 2 weeks of running, like I did, but what if I could get to...I don't know.....30. So that's my new, revised goal, for what good it does me.

Hey guys -
Are we all too injured to run or even talk running? We were near the bottom of the page!!!

Got back from my doctor. He was going to do an EKG, but they had problems with their machine, so either I am a vampire or no EKG for me today. I'm getting a referral for some sort of imaging test as well, just to make sure everything is OK. My doctor isn't seeming overly worried and when I asked if I needed to avoid exertion, he said absolutely not, so I'm going to get on with things, I guess.

I've got a Jingle Bell run coming up on the 15th. My dad says he's all registered for it and traveling to run it with me. I just hope with my lost training that he doesn't end up leaving me in the DUST. After that, I guess my next race is the Minnie. Not registered yet, but it does seem to be the plan. I have hopes of running the 10 mile on the 4th of July next year in Michigan, and then maybe the Twin Cities 10 miler - my friend Sara, Austin's husband keeps talking about running it, but says she knows if she ropes me into it I won't let her off the hook, so she's scared to rope me into it. Seems like I'm maybe already a little roped. Wow. I was feeling like I didn't have any races coming up.....but it's just that they are kind of far away! It's winter here and I am already looking forward to spring.

Has anyone else considered getting winter running shoes?

Funny you should reply because I was going to later. I am off to the Ortho. dr. in about 15 minutes. I'll let you know what he says. I just need a professional to tell me what I did to my knee and hip.

DD (maybe) and I are planning on doing a Rudolph Run (5K) on the 15th too. You can preregister as late as the 14th, so I am going to wait and see what the dr. says today, and decide for sure. We have 41 days until we leave! :woohoo:

It is hard to believe it is almost here.

Welcome Rae! We'll have to run vicariously thru you as it apears we have all been benched.

This sciatica is literally a pain in the butt :lmao:
I'm on lots of ibuprofin and if it doesn't get better then its off to imaging for me too. I'd like to TRY to go for a run but the "suburban shuffle" has been keeping me busy. I have high hopes for a run on the treadmill tommorrow as it will be too dark to go outside.
We are also coming up on the holidays which means that things will get even busier so I'll have to try harder to run.

Corinna, what are "winter running shoes" ?? I've always worn my regulars with ski socks (and I live in New England).

Good luck at the Dr, Allie. I think it's smart to find out for sure what's going on.

I have my echo cardiogram scheduled for the 14th. Very exciting. I'm just hoping the equipment is working......

Allie, it would be fun if we were running races on the same day! My whole family is now registered - there is a 2K that DH and the kids are going to do while I do the 5K with my dad and Austin. Provided it's not too cold. I mean, I think I am in for whatever the temp, it might not be as much fun for the kids if 5? out there.

As for winter running shoes, I'm not sure how much there is in that line, but I was reading about a model from Nike that is warmer and more waterproof. I now forget what it was called, of course. I know the ones I'm wearing now are not a BIT waterproof, so that appealed at least a little. I've been walking in my running shoes, as well. My feet did so great at WDW overall. I'm pretty sure that the serious runners don't wear their running shoes all the time, though. Not 100% sure if that is because they wear differently or just to save them in general or what, but it makes me feel a lot less hardcore to wear my running shoes all the time. My knees feel good though! :)

Winter running shoes? Ski socks?? Man, I've been living in a cave! When the weather here got cold, I put on pants, long sleeve shirts, maybe a jacket, sometimes a hat. But warmer socks? Never thought of it. Winter running shoes? Who'd thunk it. :confused3 I'm learning so much from you guys. :goodvibes

Corinna - I hope everything checks out ok for you. Sounds like your doc isn't overly worried, so that's a good sign :thumbsup2

This really has become the injured thread...maybe we should change the name? :confused3 Nah, that might scare the people in the C25K thread. :rotfl: I have confidence that we'll all be back out there soon, doin' our running thing!

Have a great weekend, ladies!

Well, I did it - I pulled out my goal for November. Granted, my revised goal, but with 4 days remaining, I wasn't going to get 20 miles run, not even for you guys. But I did manage 6 today. So it's been a full day. I broke the EKG machine and then proceeded to crank out a 10K. Sheesh. Maybe I need to get my head examined next, right? You're right, Kim. My Doctor didn't seem overly concerned, given that I hadn't passed out yet. He said that what I was describing wasn't a terrible thing, but he wanted to make sure to check things out, so evidently, I have taken that as a green light of sorts. It was 6 miles on the treadmill with my DH sitting right nearby with a phone, though, so maybe I'm not as cavalier as I might seem. I even feel pretty good, though after about an hour, I needed an infusion of Sport Beans. It's amazing what a little sugar can do. And I am loving the fresh music in my shuffle. Kate - if you are out there, I listened to OUR song tonight. No, not the Brady Bunch - it was Na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye. Man, what a run that was.

Anyhow, it feels darned good to get that 30 miles polished off. I can now concentrate on shopping and cooking tomorrow for the "Friend Thanksgiving" which is on Saturday and completely vegetarian.

As for changing the name, I think that there is no need. It says Runners UNITE! This month, we were united in injury and distraction and rehabilitation. I tell you, I feel great after my however long it was without running. My PF is all healed and happy, my hammies are a little tight, but not painful, and my cardio didn't even suffer all that much. Sometimes some concentrated recovery can be a good thing. We'll all be out there again soon enough, I'm sure. :dance3: :dance3: :dance3:
