Hi,

Wondering about the drive between Charlottesville and Dulles - what kind of a road is Route 29? I know that right in Charlottesville, it's very congested with lights and shopping centers. Is it like that the whole way or does it become a quicker drive. Specifically I'm thinking about the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and trying to get a college student home - Dulles seems to have better options than Richmond. Thanks to anyone who can offer some info.

Hi there, I live near Charlottesville and the drive up 29 is not bad at all to Dulles. It's mostly a divided highway, 2 lanes on each side. The only time it's slightly congested is in Cville and then when you hit the Warrenton area. By then you're right there at I-66.

I take that route from Cville to Philly to visit relatives and that stretch of 29 is the only time of the trip I relax! Rolling hills, scenery. Places to stop if you need to. I recommend Spitony's Pizzeria for the cheese fries!

Watch your speed on 29 - at times it's patrolled pretty heavily.

Allow some extra time if the drive is during any part of morning rush hour. 29 from Warrenton up to I-66 and I-66 to Dulles can be very congested and slow until about 9:30 am. Evening rush hour shouldn't be an issue on this route.
