Roseanne back

I'm sorry I don't meet your standards for indignation and righteousness.

To me, hate is hate. Namecalling is namecalling. None of it is okay to me, and I sincerely try not to be selective in how I judge it.

Really? I definitely try to use some judgement when dealing with namecalling. I have kids. I try very hard to teach them not to call anyone any names at all. But their punishment would be *far* more severe if the name they called a classmate was particularly offensive or racist or preying on a person's vulnerabilities rather than if they called someone "booger breath" as my 6 year old called her brother yesterday.

Calling a black woman half ape isn't even remotely comparable to the above. If you are American I hope you understand the long history of white people claiming that black people are part ape, or only partially human in order to subjugate them.

Again, the whataboutism needs to stop. Regardless of what anyone else did or said, in the words of Sara Gilbert, what Roseanne said was "abhorrent." There can be absolutely no defense of or excuse for what she said.

Because people don't seem to understand the 1st amendment, the 1st amendment states that "congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech." It means you can be legally prosecuted for exercising freedom of speech. It does not mean that you cannot be held personally responsible for what you say.

When you are the employee of a company you are considered a representative of that company. As such, they have to right to fire you if you injure the reputation of or misrepresent the values of that company.

So, if I own a professional sports organization, and many of my players refuse to stand for the anthem, then it costs me revenue due to less fan interest, can I punish those employees?

I am sorry you don’t understand. It is very possible to say that what she said is wrong while also saying that other hateful comments and tweets made by some on television are also wrong.

What a child does is say that they shouldn’t be in trouble because “Sally did it too”. Is anyone saying that Roseanne should not have been fired?

Yes, The View includes strong opinions as does Fox News. My problem with your comments is the seeming lack of realizing that Roseanne crossed over to blatant racism. Many shows currently in the "news" genre are opinion based. Some of those opinions are offensive and over the top for me (everything on Fox News) so I don't watch. Racism is crossing a line.

She has said she was on Ambien at the time.

I also read that the actress who plays Harris called her manager to quit, but was told the show was canceled. It seems like her costars are furious. I don't think John Goodman or Laurie Metcalf have spoken out yet. Sara Gilbert has.

Isn’t that actress Sara Gilbert’s DD in real life?

What does the NFL have to do with a racist tweet except to try to insert your pet peeve?

And yet, as much as I don't like the suppression, the NFL has the right to require their employees to behave in a certain way.

I work a government job and I cannot be involved in politics while on the job or will be fired. Many companies have behavior standards.

#Whataboutism

Although now the NFL will have to deal with the fallout of all the people that support the players, me being one as an NFL season ticket holder.

I have heard rumors of other methods of supporting Black Lives Matter such as raising a fist or linking arms and bowing heads or the worst rumor, a strike. A strike would hurt their revenue even more if they can't hold games although I see that as unlikely.

I have clearly said, at least twice, if not three times that what she said was racist and ignorant. Not sure how that is "a seeming lack of realizing that Roseanne crossed over to blatant racism". Seems to me that its saying the same thing but maybe I am not understanding you.

We are not rating the hatefulness of other's remarks.

This may not be what you were inferring, but typically bringing in other's lesser actions is often seen as only an attempt to lessen the impact of a person's wrongdoing and to subtly give them some leeway by saying, "Yes she did xyz, but see, others do bad things too."

Are you saying anyone who participates in name calling should be fired?

LOL I know who and what you think you are getting at. Please do not insult my intelligence. You have absolutely no idea what my opinion of that person is. But I can say this, I can dislike what is said immensely and see that a person is doing a good job too. I can also see that while one person's job and how they do that job is very much a necessary thing, a racist idiot on a comedy show or a blabbering idiot on talk show isn't one of those jobs.

Name calling is not the same thing as hate filled speech. What Roseanne did is hate filled. What others do is hate filled just for different reasons. What he does is childish but not necessarily from hate.
