Actually, Wanda Sykes, one of the Roseanne producers, called President Trump an Orangutan.

I never watched the show, but I’m not surprised by the tweet. It seemed just a matter of time before she exposed herself to all as just another hater. There’s just so much hate out there...

Calling a black woman half ape isn't even remotely comparable to the above. If you are American I hope you understand the long history of white people claiming that black people are part ape, or only partially human in order to subjugate them.

Again, the whataboutism needs to stop. Regardless of what anyone else did or said, in the words of Sara Gilbert, what Roseanne said was "abhorrent." There can be absolutely no defense of or excuse for what she said.

Because people don't seem to understand the 1st amendment, the 1st amendment states that "congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech." It means you can be legally prosecuted for exercising freedom of speech. It does not mean that you cannot be held personally responsible for what you say.

When you are the employee of a company you are considered a representative of that company. As such, they have to right to fire you if you injure the reputation of or misrepresent the values of that company.

Yes she is a well-known comedian, but I would hazard to guess that most people had no idea she was a producer on this show. Regardless, she is neither a mouthpiece nor a central character on any ABC shows.

The problem is that the show is owned by Roseanne so she still profits from the show even without her.

That’s what I’m saying. Same actors. New characters. It’s been done. They did it with Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad. Heck, that’s halfway what Golden Girls was. That was sort of a remix of Maude and the Mary Tyler Moore show. Even if she owns those characters, she doesn’t own the genre or that cast and crew.

You are correct. It's truly grasping for straws to deem the comments of each of these women as equal. Whataboutism to the max.

She does own the show so any attempt to create a show based on her idea with or without the cast will trigger a lawsuit. I liked the show a lot but it’s done.

What Roseanne tweeted was hateful and ignorant. ABC did the right thing. BUT that doesn’t change the fact that others that work for ABC and other networks have said things they should not have and continue working. It is entirely possible to see both of those things even though some here seem incapable of understanding that.

The problem may be that the characters were based on her comedy - so she might "own" them and they would have to pay her for their use. I'm sure they don't want to continue to work with her or pay her for anything.

Why is it in these threads you can never just admit someone was racist without caveat, or trying to point out something someone else said and trying to create false equivalencies or ifs ands or buts.

Could be. Roseanne has never been someone I thought of as completely stable. Then again drugs didn't put hate in her heart. If she was on them (or ambien) as she claims) all that did was lift the veil of discretion.

Since you chose to respond to her words and not the meaning of her words in the context of this thread, it should be pointed out that, while name calling is wrong, calling a white person with a bad, orange fake tan an orangutan is nothing like calling a black person an ape. Nothing.
