Rogue One catch all thread

We happened to be at moana tonight and a showing of R1 came out next to us afterward...

Half were in tears...no joke.

I just kinda floated out, with this big stoopid grin on my face. My kids got tired of me saying "WOW!"

I stayed offa Facebook and the DIS for the past several days - avoiding spoilers - WOW! it's awesome. Everything I had hoped for, and MORE!

When I say tears....I'm talking grown adult "geek joy" tears...

There were some tween girl ones too...I guess the movie can be "heavy" to certain demographics ;)

I'm actually pretty upset that I'm traveling over the next few days and won't be able to go see it again for a while.

I was insanely excited for 3 movies this holiday season: Moana, Fantastic Beasts and Rogue One. I absolutely love Rogue One and Moana and, as a huge Harry Potter fan, just thought Fantastic Beasts was ok but a bit disappointing. 2 out of 3 isn't bad at all :)

Here are 2 blurbs from box office mojo:

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story delivered the largest Thursday preview of 2016 last night, taking in $29 million as it heads into 4,157 theaters this weekend. This tops the $27.7 million brought in by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and $25 million from Captain America: Civil War from earlier this year and serves as the seventh largest preview gross of all-time.

Additionally, the film has brought in an estimated $33 million internationally after its first two days of release in 47 territories including the UK ($5.0M), Australia ($3.6M), Germany and France ($3.1M).

We'll have a look at Friday estimates tomorrow morning, but for now you can check out our weekend preview below.

SATURDAY AM UPDATE:Rogue One: A Star Wars Story delivered an estimated $71 million on Friday, including $29 million from Thursday night previews. The question now is to wonder whether this one is going to play along the lines of a Twilight movie and settle in a little over $140 million for the weekend or a little like The Dark Knight Rises which also saw Thursday previews account for 40% of its Friday gross and ended up finishing the weekend at $160.8 million. At this point an opening just shy of $160 million seems a good bet.

Just saw it tonight, and thought it was really good. DH said that it was the prequel that we all wanted and deserved. I think I liked it a little bit more than Force Awakens, but I still like TFA a lot. Rogue One was nice though, because it told a complete story without any wondering or cliff hangers. I thought they did a good job with fakes for the original characters, like Leia and Tarken. Loved K2SO. I didn't think I would, because I don't really like how he looks. I thought a new Star Wars movie every year might be too much, but maybe not, now that I have seen how the story lines will work.

Of course I respect your opinion - but I think Rogue One is ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE better than TFA - and I liked that movie well enough! There were just sooooooo maaaaaaany hoooooleees in TFA, even though it was still good and entertaining. ...and a fair share of "stiff" acting...

Might want to put that spoiler tag on this...

The movie has been out for exactly 53 hours at this point

Nah...I believe disney on this one: they covered it...

Though I would love some more side stories or deeper takes on ancillary sideplots
Some are wondering if she makes an appearance in the Han Solo film or a separate independent film in the future. I don't think this would be a Rogue One sequel.

All of the main Star Wars stories after the first 3 have plot holes. I think it's just something you have to accept or end up disliking them all. I try to ignore the plot holes until I have seen them a dozen times at home;)

My interpretation of the article you linked is that the movie initially had an ending where she survived, so they had built the sequel clause into her contract, but that they changed the ending after the initial filming and of course...now she is as someone else put it - stardust...in more ways than one! Part of me would like to see her have a cameo in something else because I like her character, but I also kind of think her story has been told and any other connections to her with other characters would have to be really well done or would feel forced.

For those worrying about kids...it's not a happy ending type story...at all...but I didn't find it to be a "gritty war movie" either...it's depends on the kid if they will find it thrilling or downing.

I read the review that was posted earlier about taking kids, and he worked it up that there were some very deeply intense/disturbing scenes. Did you find this to be true? I have a 9 & 6 year old who are SW obsessed and want to go. They've seen the original 3 (as in the very first ones released), plus Force Awakens and hve been fine with them. We're just debating on whether to take them or not.

I wouldn't call anything "disturbing"...but that's a matter of choice.

The one scene meant to "disturb" was awesome...but it had an almost cartoonish quality to it as well.

There is a lot of what I would describe as "not happy"...so if you have sensitive kids you might want to sneak out on your own and judge it first.

I took my soon to be 9 and just turned 7 and they liked it/want to go back...no nightmares or visible emotional trauma ;)

They also seem to have framed it as Star Wars...not making it part of anything they associated with daily life.

Your call

I thought it was a very good, but not great movie. Better then the "bad" movies (Prequels/ROTJ) but not quite up to the "best movies" Definite worth a viewing or two though.

Review:
The first act was the best for me. It was visually different and had the most gritty parts of the movie. The character were introduced well, especially Chirrut Îmwe and K-2SO who had some stand out scenes. The first act also posed questions that unfortunately were dropped after the first act of the movie. Watching Cassian in the first scenes and later Saw Gerrera really showed the Rebellion (and the splinter cell Rebellion) in different light. It is a shame that some of the acts (Cassian killing the informant, and then killing one of Saw men in the street battle) are never really touched on. Also the interrogation/torture of Bodhi Rook is never really examined (cool monster though). The destruction of Jedha was a powerful moment though, maybe more then the ending.

I feel the movie falls off the second act in a big, but not movie breaking way. The second act just felt unnecessary. First is Krennic meeting Vader. While it was interesting to see Vader "at home" I really did not see the point of the scenes other than to just introduce Vader to the movie. Nothing really progressed in it. Although I can forgive it in a fanboy way to see Vader in the Bacta Tank and the return to Mustafar.

Worse though were the detour to Edo (sp?). It really provided nothing. No new information was really gained (they knew from the hologram message that they needed to go to Scariff already) and the Jyn/Galen reunion was to cliche and short to really mean anything. With no evidence or proof and just talking out my sides the second act seems made up on the fly to pad the runtime after movie runtime came up short or because the reshoots changed the plot around and they needed it to clear up some loose ends (mainly Galen who all his scenes could of taken place on Scariff with no affect on the movie).

The act act things picked up greatly. The movie did fall into a little more "standard movie mode" (It seems like when there is not a Death Star to blow up the next best thing Star Wars movies fall back to is taking shields down) but made up for it with great action and cameos and (mostly) earned emotional sacrifices. Like the first act of the movie everyone had there moment, both in heroics and sacrifice. Everything moves briskly and there are no slow parts. The ending is sad but hopeful. It does make watching A New Hope a better experience and even downplays Luke a little bit which is nice. While Luke is instrumental in the Rebellion victory watching Rogue One makes me think that if not Luke, someone would of stepped up in his place. When Yoda (admitally in Empire) says there is "another" I now have the feeling the Rebellions was full of Lukes ready to make there mark.

Random thoughts;

I thought the plot was a little needlessly complicated. Rebellion needs Jyn, to find Saw, to Get Rook, to find Galen, to get to Scariff, to get plans. That seems like one to many steps.

The same complication happens in the end. I cannot even describe the steps, but the short version is: Find plans, get to dish, Rook connects a wire, another guy flips a switch, now dish needs to be aligned, ect. It gave people things to do in the end but still a little much for me.

Chirrut was one of the best parts of the movie. Loved his devotion to the Force and his friendship with Baze really shown through. Especially in the end. I could totally see both of them becoming force ghosts and hanging out together. Although I so though his walking stick in the end was going to turn out to be a lightsaber and he was going to use it to deflect the shots until he got to the switch.

I also loved how Saw Gerrera was like a proto Darth Vader. From his robotics to his breathing.

No trouble with the Cameos or CGI characters. I was surprised how big of a part Tarkin had. But it was a good surprise.

Darth Vader in the end. Both epic and a little silly. Epic in seeing him really show his brutality. But a little silly seeing how the one guy at the end of the very short hallway kept screaming for people to take the disc yet Vader takes his time getting to him. Give him a force yank away from the door real fast. I would of loved to see a longer version of this scene though with the disc being passed through multiple people sacrificing themselves to protect the dish.

While the movie focused on a Jyn and a few people in the Rebellion not enough credit goes to the unnamed people who gave there lives up for Jyn. From soldiers volunteering for the mission to the pilots in space bringing down Star Destroyers, this was a team mission through and through and I liked how it was not just one person saving the day.

Order of sacrifices in emotional weight:
Honorary Mention: Everyone in the Rebellion or on Jedha/Scariff who died
1. K-2SO
2. Chirrut Îmwe
3. Galen Erso
4. Baze Malbus (
5. Bodhi Rook (not enough time with the character for big impact but the suddenness of his death gives it the gritty edge.
6. Jyn and Cassian (to cliche with a romantic component really not needed)

Finals Thoughts:
Rogue One might not be a movie that needed to be told, but now that it has I am glad it was. It opened the world up and showed a imperfect rebellion finding hope. Some of darker themes in the movie are dropped in favor of standard storytelling by the end, and the middle of the movie is redundant and unnecessary, but the highs (and emotional lows) of the movie outweigh them to make a movie that, ending considered, still makes you (or at least me) leave the movie uplifted.

8/10 for me.

I definitely liked Rogue One better than TFA. But as far as plot holes in TFA go, that's pretty much expected for any trilogy or story arc. They're supposed to leave holes and open/unanswered questions so that they can be explained in forthcoming films, as did with the original and prequel trilogies. Another good comparison would be Clone Wars to Rebels... I don't know if you have ever watched either of those shows, but Clone Wars dealt in story arcs that left holes all over the place. The story would unfold over many episodes, where as in Rebels the story unfolds episode to episode.

That being said, I think Rogue One was amazing, and as a PP said, its the prequel we've all been waiting for.
