Rogue One catch all thread

Now that I know how to use the spoiler tag...

So I kept myself very spoiler free. I figured the movie would end with someone handing Leia the plans, but we'd only see her back. So when we saw Carrie Fisher's face I was shocked...still am. And that ending...having Vader just mow down all those Rebel soldiers really reminded us that he is a villain. That was no Kylo Ren throwing a tantrum.

I was so shocked and happy to have Red Leader and Gold Leader show up!!! And poor Red Five. As soon as you heard his call sign it was like ugh, clear the way for Luke. It all makes so much sense now for a New Hope. I always kind of wondered why Luke got assigned an x wing. I mean...yeah Leia probably mentioned he was force sensitive but giving him an xwing?! I guess it was cause most of their pilots got wiped out at Sarif. Most likely had more ships than pilots.

The Tarkin actor and makeup was really good.

I'm glad that C3PO and R2 got the cameo, this way they've still been in all the movies.

I was super excited for the Rebels cartoon shout out. When their pleas to the Rebellion to go get the plans were turned down, you can hear someone paging General Syndulla, who I have to assume is Hera.

But that ending though...on the car trip to the theater I said I'd be surprised if more than one, two tops, of the crew survived. I never thought they'd wipe everyone out. As soon as the robot went I was like oh no, here it all comes.

I also appreciate that they left it up in the air if the one guy was force sensitive or not.

And ugh, how much of a tease was the whole thing with the Jedi temple and the old abandoned statues in the desert.

Tarkin was totally CGI. No actor and makeup involved which must blew me away

All I can say is wow.

There are trilogies that deal with redemption, victories, and characters dancing with ewoks. And then there is this…pretty much the antithesis of a jedi-centric trilogy movie. Everyone dies…period. But man did I love this movie. No repeat plot elements like Lucas loved to do. No cute, cuddly ewoks, fart gags, overdone CGI everything or just plain bad acting. And oh yeah, Diego Luna's character clearly shot first in the alley at the beginning of the movie. Talk about dark; that little moment pretty much set the tone right away.

I found the acting to be excellent. The basic plot was just fine for this type of movie. And the special effects were of course top notch. And by the way, from what I read online, Tarkin's face was a CGI face (just like Leia's). That was NOT makeup. I will have more thoughts on this when I can. As of now though, this is in my top 3 (RotJ is not)

I think there was a lot to love about the movie...

I am surprised they wiped them all out...i thought there would be something vague about it. Like you weren't entirely sure what happened to some.

One thing that cynics are going to complain about forever is that they had the Death Star blowing up "parts" of planets multiple times. They can explain it away...but it's not gonna play with those who are looking to nitpick.

I totally missed the Rebels reference...don't worry, I'll see it again (maybe today )

I thought Tarkin was great...I loved that they took bail organa and fleshed him out a tad...considering how awful the prequels were.

And the leia thing was great and I loved how they made an obiwan reference. Let's face it: Carrie fisher looked so awful due to here own physical self abuse last year that this brief appearance was a relief...I mean...that IS it, isn't it? No marble mouth.

Edwards embraced everything...he wrapped his arms around the ethos of Star Wars...even the things that pompous people pick at to look cool. He had one shot and he took it. It's like he said "f%*& yeah - we grew up on Star Wars, we love it, and I'm not gonna apologize... go screw off"

Can't thank him enough.

And boy do I love the Mon Calamari...how can you not?

As far as Vader goes...the costume was off. It's obvious they redesigned the costume in 1979 for empire...and then again for "fat Vader" in 1982. It didn't work here as the original was "skinny Vader". Edwards did make a fantastic tongue in cheek joke with the "emperor"...I loved that. And I'm so glad they got this movie done while James Earl jones was still living...really great. But I was left thinking that there was an art form to how david prowse moved in the suit as well...a quiet, giant sort of "gliding"...that was missing here. The scenes make up for it though...so we'll forgive them.

Wow...first time i can't wait to go back again since the Gipper era

And yes - it makes the prequels look that much more awful...and yes - it makes Abrams look like that much more of a coward for the reboot. They really needed lawrence kasdan to "write" that? Cranky harrison ford bickering and rehashed everything else? Jeez

Really?! Geez, I didn't know that. They've come a long way since
the new Tron

Until the movie was over, I actually did not believe they would do a SW movie without a Jedi. I guess there was a lightsaber, Vader's, but it was actually refreshing to not have Jedi. They were pretty rare and this shows that they couldn't drop in to save the day all the time.

I thought it was a bit odd. They actually have 2 names for Vader in the credits. My first thought was great, 2 more Vaders I need to meet at conventions. I wonder why there were 2. My boyfriend and I both couldn't get over how fat the neck of the suit looked.

I think this movie was very refreshing. With the main trilogies, the Empire was kind of almost a joke. Stormtroopers could never hit anything, you had absolutely no fear for the heroes and you knew the day would be saved. With this movie...it really shows how dire things were in a New Hope and what the Rebels were fighting for. This movie made the SW galaxy a bit more real. Good guys aren't all good (yeah, Cassian shooting that innocent, nice seeming guy because he didn't want him to give him away was huge), bad guys are actually bad and a lightsaber can't save every day.

Another thing I noticed, upon further reflection that I actually kind of missed, is that we had no signature ship in this movie, no Falcon. Of course we got the U wings, and I actually loved the Hammerhead ship.

Until I looked it up after the movie, I was thinking that the K2SO robot was actually the robot that Chopper had befriended and helped defect from the Empire in Rebels. But he wasn't.

I also applaud not having the opening crawl. It really set the tone that this was something different.

I like romance in action movies just fine, but it was also nice that they didn't go there here. I thought that Jyn and Cassian were going to kiss at the end (I mean, it was the end of everything for them) but I can appreciate that they just hugged. There doesn't always have to be an epic romance.

One small complaint is the score. Right now, I don't remember it being that epic. I'm going to listen at work today and maybe I'll change my mind.

Last thought, I also liked how they cleared up that pesky little Death Star exhaust port debate. How people would talk about how dumb it was to have that weakness in the Death Star. Now we know why :)

They explain the Death Star part. But in one line, so it's easily missed.

I will say I liked this way better than TFA. I would have liked it even more if they had built out the characters a bit more. I wanted to pull for them, but there was such a lack of back story for most of them, it was hard to get emotionally tied to them.

Chirrut and Maze were my favorite two, there's a story there that should have been told in more depth.

And yes, I'll be taking the boys to see this now. We got free posters last night, so they both got one as a "thanks for letting Daddy go alone!"

They actually explained the Death Star thing last night with a line and a couple of lines in 1977...

My point was it is gonna get glossed over and labeled as "corny" by those with a Star Wars axe to grind.

I'm with you on everything else...I thought all the actors did a pretty good job, the script was not terrible (the critics who said that are just 'bags...if you get my drift)...and I wanted more.

Can't get that much backstory in 2 hours though...just can't. I wish it were 3 (said that many times).

Not with the 45 minute/3 front ending...which Edwards did...as well he should

Something else to add here.

I love how Edwards and company treated the force in this movie. Not one mention of midi-chlorians - Hooray! They brought it back to what Yoda described it as in Empire. It was mystical again. It was something that was followed, that was worshiped, and feared. There were those that protected and defended the force that were not even jedi. It made it more of a religion which is what it always was to me. Lucas desperately tried to destroy that in the prequels. Lucky for him that Gareth Edwards and Kathleen Kennedy are bringing it back to where it needs to be in Star Wars lore.

Another thing I loved - and this is going to sound weird so I apologize ahead of time - and that is how the heroes each met their own end. It wasn't by falling off a high catwalk into the mechanical depths of some building. Each met their fate in a very real way - alone, helpless, against unbeatable odds. Some on the sand, another alone in the confines of a ship, another behind a console by those it used to fight beside. Such brave choices by the writers and director of this movie. I cannot laud them enough for the decisions that were made for this movie.

Something else I wanted to comment on was Diego Luna's character. I see other sites complaining that he wasn't enough of a Han Solo character. Well I say thank god for that. I hate cookie-cutter archetypes. And yes, they could have found a loud, funny, boisterous male lead to counter Jynn's character. But they did not, and instead opted to go with a more steely, quiet type that absolutely pulled no punches. I truly appreciate that they did that with his character.

Just continuing with more random thoughts, but how awesome was it to see Vader wipe the corridor up with the rebel fighters. For the brief amount of time that sequence lasted, you could sense how the rebels feared him. He became a monster in that short amount of time, the weapon that the emperor wanted Vader to become. It was genius to add that in during the end, to establish why he was to be feared as an enemy.

^ I can say without a doubt, that it'll be added to my Blu-ray collection in April, and will likely see more play time than TFA did.

Yes, tough to build them out in two hours, but a little less blasting for more character building would have been okay in my book.

Here's a video review from our preview last night, but it's NOT spoiler free, so proceed with caution!!

Then again, Williams supposedly did the force awakens score and I thought the trailer song was better than anything Williams wrote for the movie.

Agreed...and that's on Abrams/Kennedy/etc for doing a reboot...not a continuation.

As I expected...I hate Abrams so much today...what a Hollywood schill...that's so...ummm..."disney"...

Are you talking about the almost haunting arrangement of the original Princess Leia theme that they played in the trailer when the falcon dips into the canyon chased by the tie fighters?

That was my favorite part of that movie and it wasn't even in it. It's such a bummer when I've watched it since. It's like they "got it"...but really didn't...

Can't agree with you guys more today...

I thought jones was good...but I thought Diego Luna was FANTASTIC. Wow...did he create a good Star Wars character...if even though he will be trapped in a short time frame with it forever.

What the hell were those snotty critics watching?

The movie was not perfect but they picked the wrong things to complain about.

The complaint should be that the pacing/cuts were almost too fast...which is the lucas prequel mistake And exactly what empire strikes back is not.

And the music was written for a different Kind of movie...not Star Wars. Thats a "lucas" type move...fixing what isn't broken.

And the empire is - finally - ruthless, tyrannical and evil...not since palpatine in Jedi...or Vader in empire.

Enough anakin/Kylo ren "torn"/whiney stuff. Shoot/stab first...ask questions Later

Now that's somebody has made an actual Star Wars film...it's all on Rian Johnson...

Hopefully the Star Wars fans lap it up and blow the box office away...hopefully the foreign markets show up this time...

Because there should be expensive reshoots talked about between the presidio and Burbank RIGHT NOW if episode 8 isn't more of "this" and less of "that" from 2015

And one more: this movie did more to serve the Force Than the last 4 that were allegedly all about the force.

They returned the mysticism to it...the one that was created by a subtle elegance by Alec Guinness and Frank Oz and mark hamill and Ian mcdiarmid 30+ years ago.

The "defenders" of the temple...did more to advance the storyline than talking light sabers and midichlorians...maybe the most since the key force scene that really solidified the legend of the whole story: yoda lifting the ship and the Williams piece with it in empire

I'm emotionally spent...in a good way...

Yep, the song that was used in most of the force awakens trailers. Starts out with just a piano. Was not written, or perhaps, arranged by, Williams and wasn't in the movie but is still my favorite song associated with the movie.

Jones was good. Her story was the most fleshed out, so it was easier to "root" for her. They kind of missed the mark on the odd developing love story with her and Cassian...I think that's what was happening....what did this movie take place over? Like two days?

Like I said, I really rooted for Chirrut, and Maze. There was a connection there, that needed a little more fleshing out. As well as Chirrut's ties to the Force.

I can't keep up with Rebels (I don't have DisneyDX), so trying to go back and watch all the Clone Wars stuff would be overwhelming, so Saw was kind of lost on me.

I thought they captured some of the daily Empire stuff fantastically. Power struggles - Tarkin is/was a creepy, plotting, bad *** dude.

I'm not a huge fan of Mendelson (I hated him The Dark Knight Rises), but he was pretty good as Krennic. Little guy (literally) trying to climb the Imperial Ladder. Vader's snark to him in their meeting was perfect.

I've read good things about Rian's take for Ep. VIII. I hope it all rings true. I think Disney is doing a pretty good job on taking a massive catalog, storyline, and creating something even hardcore fans can get behind. None of the movies are without their faults.

i think a big mistake was Whittaker...

I think they needed a crazy, forest Whittaker type character...so they said "hey, let's get forest Whittaker!"

It ended up "the last king of tatooine"

I think jyn and andor ended up what often does happen in real war and does provide "grit" to a story like this: two people with a connection who don't know what to make of each other who are helpless against the fast paced violence and plight they are in.

I think they did a good job of that...

I'm sure back on yavin the pols would have been saying..."gee...the death toll was a little "high" for some maps, wasn't it?"
