Ring Worm

I think I have ring worm. It is on my chin and is close to a circle of dry reddened skin that is itchy and peeling. My daughter pointed it out to me. Too late to call the doctor tonight. Any suggestions as to what to do until I can get an appointment to see him. TIA

The fungus that causes ringworm is the same fungus that causes atheletes foot. Buy some athletes foot cream (like Lotrimin) and use that until you can see your doctor.

My DD9 got ringworm last year from the stray cat that we took in. It wasn't a big deal and cleared up quickly.

No, but my dd just went to the Doc for this. She said that steroid cream would actually worsen it if it is in fact Ringworm. Which reminds me...I need to go get her CREAM! Thanks...I forgot about it.

It is very faint on dd and we think it could be a mild case. If it is indeed ringworm the doc said it takes 3 weeks to begin to clear up.

Yup, athlete's foot cream or yeast infection cream will clear it up.

My son had it a few months ago on his scalp. He was over a friends house and and called us the next morning (Sat) in somewhat of a panic (he thought he was dying) Because I wasn't positive what it was, and it was the weekend, we ended up taking him to the emergency room... this is the first time in 18 years he had ever gone to the emergency room... and for ringworm at that! They gave him some internal medicine because of it being on the scalp. But it was no big deal. I would do what someone else said and put some antifungal cream till you get to the doctor.

My kitties had it way back when and gifted us all with the "worm"!!
Lotrimin worked wonders.....just remember to put it on with a q-tip and put it on frequently.

My daughter got it on her scalp once. I was brushing her hair and she complained that it hurt, so I looked under her hair and saw some NASTY flaky stuff!

I didn't know what it was and sent her to school. Big mistake, the nurse called and told me that she had ringworm and had to be sent home. It is quite contagious. She needed to take medicine by mouth since a cream wouldn't work on her scalp. I ended up catching it from her on a place were I had wore an estrogen patch. I used anti-fungal cream. It took a while to clear up but it did.

It sounds more gross than it is. It will clear up, you just have to be patient.

It's very contagious. I noticed a spot on DD last year in 1st grade. I couldn't figure out where she picked it up from. I figured that it was one of those things that kids pick up who knows where, so I began to treat it with Lotrimin right away. A couple of days later, I went to her class to volunteer and the boy that sat right next to her had a couple of large spots on his face. I don't know how the teacher could miss them, they were quite large and red.

My ds10 went through this two years ago, and his doctor had us use Lotrimin AF several times a day for a month on his skin (he had it on several places on his back)--it worked like a charm. We later noticed it on his scalp, and he had to be put on oral meds. for another month. He lost a patch of hair about the size of a quarter and it took almost a year for it to grow back fully. So if your scalp starts to itch, check it out immediately and let your Dr. know. Ringworm's yucky stuff.

Be sure to use the meds as directed, for 3-4 weeks....If you use it only until it clears it will come back and be even harder to get rid of. My dd had one on her leg several years ago. She was a freshman in college and caught it from one of the kids at the pre- school where she worked...It is very contagious. I had a little boy in school that had it in his scalp and it took a long time to heal and the hair fell out....It was very noticable....

I just did a search for ringworm on the DIS because I think it's what I might have. I teach a population of children in which ringworm is very common, so I'm assuming I picked it up at school. It's a red circular patch (not a ring) on my leg. It's sort of raised and bumpy and it itches. I really don't want to go to the doctor (long story) if I can pick up something over the counter to clear it up. Does it sound like this is what it is? Thanks so much!!!

How do you get ringworm?

My son started wrestling this year. Apparently you can catch it from the wrestling mat. It ran rampid through the wrestling league last year so the league stresses that the kids shower after every practice/meet, wash hands prior to eating & not wear their wrestling shoes anywhere but the mat. If you have a little dude that needs help with his shoes, he either puts his shoes on in gym or you carry him to & from the car with the wrestling shoes on.

That sounds exactly like ringworm. You can get Lotrimin over the counter for it. As someone else stated, if you have ringworm on your scalp you need oral meds for it.
