Has anyone used Rimadyl to help control their dogs arthritis? Did it work?

Our baby just turned 13 and with todays vet visit we asked about something for her pain..while not too bad, she does have one leg that she favors and a little bit of a stiff hip.

I really want this to make her feel better, but am so worried about it making her sick or worse yet.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Our older Border Collie took it for a couple of years. It did seem to make it easier for her to get around. Never seemed to make her sick and she just seemed to feel so much better. She never complained before so we felt bad after she started on it and we saw the difference in her. She has since passed away.

The only problem we had was that our puppy got into her meds and ate them, too much of it was not a good thing. Had a very sick puppy :( Child proof is not puppy proof! He just chewed the lid off.

My dog was just on Rimadyl for a knee problem which has since cleared up. Vet said torn cruciate ligament but within a day and a half of Rimadyl, she was walking normally. So much for the vet's dx!

Glad my pup's better. She's a 10-y/o Siberian Husky.:wave2:

Hope the meds help your dog!

My in-laws' black lab, who is 13, was on Rimadyl for her arthritis -- what a difference it made for her! She was able to get around so much better for about 6 months or so, but then the Rimadyl caused some problems with her liver function and she had to go off of it. She's now back on glucosamine and is doing okay, but not as well as she was on the Rimadyl. The vet said that it sometimes causes problems with the liver function, so it might be something to watch.

LtlTee-The liver thing is what I am afraid of...but, I guess at this point we can try it and bring her in to be tested for liver problems a couple of times a year. I just really want her to feel better. WE have a cottage on the lake and now that the snow is melted we took a ride down there and it is really sad to see her like this in her favorite place....sure hope this works....

My 10 month old chocolate lab is taking Rimadyl now. She has been on it about a month. She is 2 weeks post-op for a ruptured cruciate ligament. She had the staples removed yesterday.

At times I think the Rimadyl might mask her pain in her leg and she puts it down. The vet said we have to keep her crated for the next 8 weeks!!! OUCH!!

good luck and hope the rimadyl helps............

KLAIT,

I would definitely give the Rimadyl a try -- just monitor her liver numbers, which I'm sure the vet would want to do anyway. Some pups seem to be able to tolerate it -- we have a friend whose Golden Retriever has been on it for some time and has had no problems at all.
What a difference it made in my in-laws' dog. She is their baby, and while on the Rimadyl she was almost like a puppy again, chasing her favorite ball and swimming in the lake without hesitation. It made so much difference in her quality of life....I wouldn't hesitate to try it if it were my baby. After all, they're just kids with fur, right?:p

We had our Sammi on it, but she was end stage with her arthritis. It didn't help much and she spent most of her time vomiting. But like I said, she was end stage, we had her put down 2 weeks ago. :(

My dog took it for three weeks, but the vet said any longer and it will affect her liver. I have a smalll dog and don't want to take any chances, so we did not continue. I would love to get a doggie ramp so she could walk off my bed instead of jump. I know that's gotta hurt her. I tried the glucosomine, too. Didn't notice a huge difference. I didn't with either, actually. It's so hard to tell sometimes since dogs cant talk.

My dog has heart problems...vet said from old age :(

I use Rimadyl on my 14yo collie. Its a little hard for her to get up and down and it makes her feel alot better. I feel at 14 making her comfortable is the most important thing.
