Hello,

We are looking to purchase a re-sale. When looking at various listings, I can see points for 20-21-22. Let’s say it is a 200 pt contract with October use year. The points are: 100/300/200.
Would I need to use 2020 points (100) by the end of September 2021? The 300 points would be available Sept 1, 2021 and the 200 points in 2022 are available sept 1, 2022. Correct? What am I missing?
Also, why is use year so important? What do I need to consider when choosing a usenyear besides the time we usually visit (Usually Nov-Feb). Never doing summer again! Ha!

thanks!

Points allocation: you need to pay attention to the allocation of points and their status. In your example, I'll assume that the 100 points are 2020 points that were no banked, so they do expire at the end of the use year. The 300 points would be 100 banked from 2020 and 200 2021 points, so the 200 could be banked a year forward, but the 100 would expire at the end of the 2021 use year if not used.

An appropriate use year essentially gives you some extra insurance in the event you need to cancel. If you cancel a reservation within 30 days of check-in, all points go into holding and can no longer be banked. It's better if that happens early in your use year to give you plenty of time to book a new reservation. You also want to make sure you cancel any trip before your banking deadline, so any trip in the last three months of your use year presents the highest risk; if you cancel, you won't be able to bank those points.

Sounds good so far - Sept and Oct are good UYs for Nov to Feb travel.

The points are: 100/300/200.

Yes. Realistically, those points aren't useable at this point if you aren't getting access to those points in the next week or so, and so they will probably disappear into the void for no value.

Remember that Use Year is about when you "use" the pts for a stay. If you can't book and complete a stay by Sept 30, 2021, they are goners.

I think you mean Oct 1.

Just making sure you understand that those 300 pts in your 2021 UY are already "available" for booking right now. You can book 11 months out at your home resort.

Those 300 pts are valid for stays from Oct 1, 2021 to Sept 30, 2022. So if you had owned last year and wanted to book a stay starting on Oct 1, 2021 with those 300 pts, you could have gone online on Nov 1, 2020 to book that stay for up to 7 nights.

If you banked 200 pts from your 2021 UY into your 2022 UY and wanted to book a stay starting on Oct 1, 2022 with those 400 pts (plus up to 50% of 2023 UY by borrowing - so up to 500 pts total), you could go online on Nov 1, 2021 to book that stay for up to 7 nights.

Some people think they have to wait for the pts to become available, but it's all about the dates of your stay.

With an Oct UY, your points are good from Oct 1 until Sep 30.
