Hi,

I am not a DVC owner yet, but I was wondering how the renting aspects of DVC works.

Can you rent your points to anyone?
What do the people that rent need to supply you, as far as personal info?
When they are renting are they get all of you perks?
How does the process ususally work? Meaning getting the money and getting them all of the reservation documentation?

Thanks in advance for the answers. I am looking into getting a DVC membership, but I know we would not be able to go every year and renting might be a great option.

Thanks
Jim

You should read the rent/trade sticky at the top of the boards here. That has all kinds of info about renting.

The bottom line is - it's always a private transaction between 2 parties, so whatever those parties agree on is what it is -- that goes for price, payment, terms, etc.

As far as I am aware, you can rent points to anyone. You would need the renter's names, addresses, and ages of any children under 18. Perks are not guaranteed to pass on to renters, but sometimes they can be used like the TOW lounge at BLT. Even this is not guaranteed although I recently rented points and was able to access it.

The process typically would be to set up a post with your terms and you would check availability for renter's replying to your post. If renter agrees to you terms and there is availability you would change the reservation to their information and send them confirmation after DVC mails it out to you. Than the renter would normally give you a deposit and the balance based on your terms via your accepted payment methods.

I am renting now and the process is very simple and straightforward. Just keep in mind you would are in control of the reservation and as such would need to make any modifications i.e. dining, magical express, room requests for the renter.

yep.

renters get all "onsite" perks, including free parking at the resort and parks, EMH, access to the DDP, delivery of park purchases to the resort and such.

renters are not supposed to get DVC member perks, like pool hopping and dining and AP discounts. some renters may have gotten dining discounts in the past but they might be asked for the blue DVC member card, which would disqualify them.

some use paypal, others prefer checks. when i rented from an owner (before i bought in), i used paypal and got the confirmation by fax. it varies.

You don't really rent points. A non-member needs a reservation. They contact you. You make the reservation using your points. They pay you for the reservation. You become their travel agent because they cannot contact Member Services for any reason. So you notify MS if the non-member wants Magical Express or the dining plan. In the near future, members wil have to pay for the dining plan when they add it to the reservation. So if your renter wants the dining plan, you will have to get that from them as well ahead of time.

Thanks everyone for the answers. I knew I could find the answer on this board.:thumbsup2
