Renting DVC points?

care to share her?

I'll get in touch with her and direct her to this thread. That way she can reach out to you directly. I'm not comfortable giving out her info without permission, even via PM. Thanks!

care to share her?

also....
the vast majority of DVC owners only rent occassionally, as (1) points can be banked into the next year and/or (2) used for friends/family and/or (3) they do not have 1000's of points to rent to multiple parties

like the vast majority, i have rented to only a few (in my case, 2 families, multiple times), and transferred once - over the course of 14 years. if i had additional points, i would do 1 or 2 as above, then ask my previous renters (great people, great transactions).
very importantly (IMHO):
- research how renting points works (read the stickies, ask questions)
- check out past postings, length of time on boards, etc before initial contact
- before you contact a poster about renting their points, make sure you are ready to give a down payment of some sort (a contract is good, but can be difficult to enforce), and book immediately (as previously noted, inventory changes by the second).
- since all owners have the access to reservations at 7 months out, asking multiple ppl to check the same time frame/unit is futile for you, and frustrating for an owner to find out that they just spent gobs of time checking different dates, villas, etc, and that person was working with multiple owners (yes, i retain names of ppl that i will not rent to:rolleyes1).

on the other hand, i have truly enjoyed renting to the few i have. i loved helping them plan their special vacations, seeing their children grow year by year, and seeing how much they enjoyed themselves :goodvibes

whatever you decide, have a great time :)

Something else you might want to take into consideration - not everyone who reads and posts on the disboards is an honorable person. Now that you've put it out there that you are interested in renting points, you may get contacted via PM by people who don't play by the rules (ie they read the boards but rarely post and they don't put their points for rent on the rent/trade board). Those people may or may not be legitimate. You cannot post a "points wanted" thread or include dates/resorts preferences in posts on the DVC boards for a reason. It's to prevent scammers from contacting members via PM to offer them "outstanding deals".

In all honesty, the safest way to rent is to go thru a friend or family member who owns at DVC. If that doesn't work for you, then third party intermediaries like David's are a pretty safe way to go. It's almost worth it to pay the little bit extra in order to have that security. Going thru the rent/trade board is just a little more risky than going thru David's. The last way you want to go is through a DVC member who initiates the contact with you.

...I asked for half at the time of making the reservation and half 30 days before checkin. As an owner we run into problems if it is cancelled or changed because our points go into holding.....

You will seldom find an owner who accepts final payment at 30 days or less because at 30 days (if the renter decides to cancel) the member's points go into holding and must be used by the end of the use year (the twelve month period the owner has to use the points) and they can only make reservations 60 days out. So if the renter cancels in September and the member has a Dec or February Use Year, they are going to get stuck with those points because the resorts will be sold out for the rest of their year.

Unless the owner can rerent that reservation, they have just lost their points for half the payment by the renter. Maybe not even enough to pay their annual dues.

And if you find one like MinnieVanMom who cuts it that tight, they need to be ruthless. If they don't have that money in the bank, via certified check, they need to cancel your reservation. Most owners are going to want to be paid in full with a little more time to make sure that your check clears.

Renting can save you money during the Holdiay periods but also are hard to get. We are renting from the same person for the third time and he had to work to get our New Years reservations. Even calling at the 11 month period could not get all four days with the same view and had to waitlisted for 12/30. We are paying almost the same for four nights BWV 1B Boardwalk View as we are for 4 nights POR.:cool1:

This board and another that has owner will advertise when they have a reservation for rent or points to rent. I've found points can go from $8 to $15 dollars a point the cheap points are usally ones that expire within the month. The high end are rentals during Holidays and Food and Wine.

Just because someone has points for $5-8 a point doesn't mean you will be able to get a reservation. Most of the time if you wait too late to book anything (and the owner hasn't banked her/his points), you might not get anything at all.

A two bedroom villa isn't going to be cheap even with "renting DVC points".

I think it depends upon what you consider cheap. I was looking at a two bedroom Villa through Dave's and it was less than $2,000 for a Standard Room 2 Bedroom.

Renting points is always going to be less expensive than booking through Disney (even with a decent discount). But the truth is, many people are under the impression that renting points is a "cheap" way to stay onsite and it's not. It is cheaper than a reservation made thru Disney.

And I'm not sure where you're seeing 2-bedroom units for 150 pts./week or less (David's rents @$13/pt.). The cheapest DVC 2-bedroom is at AKL during Adventure Season and is a Value unit for 185 points for a week. :confused3
Even at $9/pt, the only 2 bedroom units you could get for a week would have to go for 220 points and would be difficult to snag at a date late enough to qualify for "distressed' points.

No, I was saying that renting DVC points is not a *cheap* way to stay onsite. You could always pitch a tent in the campground for as little as $48/night. Of course, that would be in August or September. But if the heat doesn't bother you...

For that matter, a value room during free dining or with a code or a discount will be cheaper - may even be cheaper without any discounts.

And offsite can be a bargain. If I ever want to feel bad about my DVC purchase, I look at timeshares I could be staying in for $400 a week through skyauction.

I think it is because we are only going for 6 nights and 7 days, so we only have one weekend night (a Friday). Value is 155 points for our selected dates.

And were you actually able to book a value 2-bedroom?

... I know we have a board here but you can't post what you are looking for. You can only respond to what people offered. ...

You can absolutely post what you are looking for on the DIS DVC Rent/Trade Board in any of the threads where DVC members are offering to make reservations for others (Rent Points).

If you are looking for a reservation within 7 months of the arrival date, any member can assist. If you are looking for a reservation more than 7 months ahead you will need to find a member who owns points at the specific resort where you wish to stay.

Be sure to read the **How to use this Board** sticky near the top of the board. Using www.DVCrequest.com is also a good option and they are an approved DIS advertiser.

Good luck!
