Does anyone have info on renting a car midweek for a couple of days while at the hotel. We need to get to Universal and Mears is expensive. ($14pp round trip). This gets high for 2 days with 4 people. What about taxis? What woud the cost be?

The Car Care Center is close to MK. There is a National and Alamo at that location. If you make a reservation at one of those, there is a shuttle bus (you have to schedule that) that will pick you up and take you to the rental place. There are also other rental places (don't know what brands) at some of the DTD hotels. Taking a taxi would get VERY expensive. One year I forgot to reserve the shuttle and didn't want to wait for an hour so bell services called a cab for me to take me from POFQ to the Car Care Center. It cost about $12 (not including tip).

You can also rent National/Alamo at the lobby of Dolphin Hotel in the EPCOT resorts area.

As an additional option, you can even rent it in WDW midway through your stay and keep it until your departure date, using the car to travel back to the airport. There is usually no additional charge to return the car to MCO when you rent in WDW (or vice versa).

Be sure to check mousavers.com for discount information related to car rentals.

I believe there is an Avis at the Hilton in DTD.

It seems to rent a car for 2 days will cost about the same as a Mears shuttle. The shuttle is $14.00 r/t per person. Does anyone know of a less expensive way to get to Universal?

i think shuttle and taxi are gonna be your only options if you don't want to rent a car. but--with your own rental car....you have the flexibility to come/go as you wish...not wait around on taxi or shuttle, bring food/snacks, etc...... That is, unless of course, you don't want the hassle of driving!!

The problem is we're gonna take advantage of the Magical Beginnings free shuttle to your hotel. I think this is what it's called. This leaves us without a way "inexpensively" to get to USO. We had planned on renting a car the whole week but didn't want to pass up the free shuttle. So I was thinking of only renting for the days we go to Universal. The only problem is my husband would have to shuttle over and pick up the car and drop it off 2 days later and shuttle back. Seems like a lot of hassle. We'll already have groceries. We plan on using Wegoshop. Don't know what to do. Any other suggestions. Wich USO had a cheaper way to get there. It's gonna cost us $122.00 for 2 days 4 people.

By the way, your son is a cutie. Is his name bubba by any chance?

Seems like a lot of hassle with getting the rental car, but you may have to decide what will work better for you....the hassle or cheaper?? (if it indeed IS cheaper to shuttle).

Personally, I would skip the shuttle,& get the car at the airport. Preregister with the rental company online , it makes it very easy & quick. Then you have the car the whole week and don't have to worry about an extra trip to get it. It's very, very convinient to have your own car there, even when staying on site.

but the OP wants to save money. We are having a car pick us up at MCO and take us to our resort. After we are finished our visit, we are going to take Disney bus to DTD, to Hilton and pick up our reserved car at Avis. Then, back to resort to claim luggage, and on our way........ The OP is just trying to figure the cheapest, easiest way....but, I don't think she'll get both. She might have to decide between "easy" and "cheap". :rolleyes2
