After reading through a slew of Threads I still have this question:

Once I purchase points for a rental, the reservation is made for me (in my name) and I receive the confirmation, do I have complete control, some control or absolutely no control over the reservation. In other words, (theoretically) could the DVC'er cancel the reservation at the last second (with or without notify me) leaving me without a reservation?

You have zero control over the reservation itself. You can call and confirm it independently, and I believe you can change requests (NS, view, etc), but not the accommodation or dates.

I don't think you really need to worry about someone ripping you off. Renting points requires trust on both sides, but we rarely hear of any problems with rentals (and with our "lumpy pillow rule," I'm sure we'd hear even the slightest complaint). When we do hear of rare rental issues, they are usually problems with the people renting the points (non-payment, bounced checks, etc), not the DVC owners.

The member will have full control of the reservation until you check in at the resort. Even though your name may be on the reservation, the member will be able to make chnages, including cancellation, to tat reservation.

Once within 30 days of arrival, there are limitations placed on cancellations, so the member would not have unrestricted use of the points if cancelled.

These transactions do require some trust between the parties involved. I'd suggest asking for (and checking) references for the person you want to rent from. You can often get a good idea about them by reading their contributions to this site.

Good luck!

Thanks, that is very helpful. I won't be paranoid in buying points.

I have now rented points for 3 Decembers in a row, and all these members were strangers to me. I trusted them; they trusted me, and all these transactions worked out perfectly fine. It's a good option ! :goodvibes

Note that the member has "limited control." Cancellation policies for points are significantly different than the ones for CRO. Even if you give the member 30+ days notice, if your reservation is at the end of their use year, you put them in a spot - their points must be used by the end of the use year - so many members who rent will not give you back all of your deposit. Requests such as non-smoking and view can be made, but are not guarenteed and the member can't do anything about your ending up in a smoking room - happens to us members as well.
