Rented points problem

Wow, so sorry that happened to you. I wonder why it takes so long to be notified by DVC of a problem like this. Assuming the charges are from your renter and not fraudulent, the renter must have noticed that $1400 of charges never showed up on their CC statement. You'd hope they would speak up about the error. Then again I think a lot of people look at mistakes in their favor as simply good luck. Most of the time if I tell a cashier they forgot to charge me for something they look at me like I have three heads and seem surprised by the honesty.

Wow I can see being held responsible for damages with in the unit but once a resort takes a cc for charging privelages they should be responsible and it should never get to 1400.00! I am wondering if the guests card was compromised like pp had said and they are disputing the charges (because maybe they never made them) Contact the renter and find out their side of the story. Good luck

I agree that you need to contact your renter ASAP! Get their side of the story and make sure the charges are real before you proceed. Then give the renters a timeframe in which to make it right either with Disney or with you. I'd probably make the timeframe pretty short! Your only other recourse if the renter doesn't respond is to go to court. I would certainly find out what the legal process would be before hand. Contact an attorney and show them your rental contract to see if you have covered yourself well enough in it.

I had the exact same issue that the OP had a few years ago and was never notified. When I asked DVC why I was not notified they say they don't do any notifications on amounts due.

Thankfully the "renter" was my BIL (he didn't rent we just made a reservations for him). He had charged all his meals, gifts, etc. to the room. When he went to check out they said there was no balance due. He argued with the front desk that he had charged many items to his room but they said their computer showed no charges. BIL had a plane to catch and figured the front desk would figure out the issue and charge his credit card. He left for a business trip. A week later still no charges on his credit card from BWV. He called they said they still showed no money due so he gave up on the matter. We only discovered the charges on our account a few months later when I went to make a reservation.

OP maybe something similar happened to your renters.

OP, I have nothing to add, but this sure gave me an uneasy feeling about ever wanting to rent out my points. I hope you get it resolved!

OP, are you able to contact these people? If you have contacted them, what did they say?

This is one reason why I don't personally rent. I'm not against it for personal purposes, but there are a lot of pitfalls.

it is very easy to get to $1400 in room charges and you can charge up to $1500 at DVC resorts before they need to charge your CC.

IMHO, Rental agreements are meaningless pieces of paper unless you intend to go to court to enforce them.

OP, that is horrifying!
I don't have any help. But I sure hope you'll get this resolved quickly and let us know what happen.

To anyone who is interested, after several conversations with MS, I'm stuck paying this if the renter does not. I've already Emailed and called the renter multiple times with no response. Amazingly, when she did answer the phone and I said my name, the line went dead (honestly!). I can't believe this as this renter works at the University of Tennessee in some professional position. I had Disney fax me the folio showing all of the charges and they certainly all look legitimate. I live in Massachusetts, the renter is in Tennessee. I'm waiting to hear from my nephew who is a lawyer to see if small claims is worth it. For $1400.00, I'd fly to Tennessee for a small claim action if I had to, I'd still be ahead. I'll post if I can get this resolved. All I can say is be careful. I know this renter is familiar with this forum and is very knowledgeable about DVC, even telling me she is an owner. She used my points as she said she didn't have enough for what she wanted to do. She had a great trip, cost me 186 points which I received $8/each and I get to pay for their food and entertainment. I'll end up making about $100 for 186 points, what does that work out to, $.54/point. She kept their charges just below the $1500.00 threshold so Disney wouldn't put the charges through until after they left, knew just what to do. What a deal, what a scam.....
Thanks
Jerry C.

Sorry this happened to you. In dealing with another owner, it sounds like it would be best to do a point transfer instead. Then they would be responsible for the incurred charges.

You may get stuck, as they could bounce payment to you, but at least DVC wouldn't put a hold on the use of your points. So you may lose the points you transfer, but I would think that is preferable to having your points frozen.

that's pretty cold. i wish you could bring criminal charges since she's basically trying to steal from you... :headache:

hopefully, she'll start to show a little conscience and be willing to straighten things out.

$1400?!?!?!?! Were they having a frat party? Oh my gosh. I hope this gets straightened out for you!

Yep, that was my thought, someone knew the system and IMO, that's just too close to the amount to get the charge run thru.

Goodness gracious!
I hope you do take them to small claims court... and I hope you'll tell the mods who they are just in case they are still actively trying to scam other members.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! It's people like this who ruin things for everyone else and make people unable to trust one another! I rented points from a couple members last year and i'm renting points this year as well from a different member and NEVER in my life would the thought even cross my mind to do something this horrible! The way I see it...The member is doing ME a huge favor by renting his/her points to me so my family and I are able to stay at Deluxe resorts for a fraction of the cost. This is so unsettling. I really hope you are able to get this resolved! This person needs to be banned from the boards, but unfortunately there is nothing stopping her from just creating a new account and doing this to someone else!

The OP has already stated that this rental was not done thru the DIS Rent/Trade Board.

Understood, but if OP is correct and that this person is active on this board maybe the mods could keep an eye on this person. Just in case...?
Maybe not since the transaction is not done on dis rent/trade board ... but just a thought?

Sorry to hear about this! Is there anyway when making a reservation to let MS know that you are not allowing charging privalges of any kind to the room? Not sure if possible but when I made a ressie for my daughter I did mention to MS that I did not want any charging on the room. The fact that she does not have a credit card made that easy!

I do know this but when I worked at a resort we would put a hold on the funds so much per night stay (pre approval) of the credit card and that would assure the credit limit on the card was not exceeded and that the card was valid.

Disney does not do that. They just make sure the card is active for charging and they don't charge anything TO the card until you hit the pre-set limit, which is $1500 for deluxes/DVC properties.
