Refinishing baseboard heating units.

well, how much do you know about plumbing?
It was much easier to remove and replace the cover without the heat pipe in place.

I forgot that the back metal plate had flanges holding the pipe...

that is not a disaster... this is! it started by looking like my pictures above.
and then we checked the sub floor and it looked like this:

this is the finished demo, after everything rotten was removed.

Yikes! I don't know much about plumbing. Is it something I could learn? ;) Where does the water go when you take the pipe apart? If the heat isn't on and the water isn't circulating is the pipe empty?

DawnCt1 & Mikeeee,

Thanks for convincing me not to poke the sleeping tigers that are my 3 old bathrooms! I'm better off not knowing what's going on beneath those sloped floors and armor plated baseboard covers.

Oh, did I forget to mention that it is smelly water? It is not often replaced. Unlike potable water lines where fresh water is constantly flushed through the system. It is not as bad as fire sprinkler water though.

we have galvanized pipe and the water is black with an oily smell. Do not get it on carpet or fabrics.

the lines are always full of water. you need to drain the system at the lowest drain, after shutting off the supply.Make sure the boiler is off so it does not run.

with our galvanised pipe there are unions that can be unscrewed with the big monkey wrenches. Copper pipe might have to be cut and resoldered.

Ignorance is bliss...as I've discovered every time I've tried to do a simple thing in my old money pit of a house.

My plumber friend showed up! He struggled but he finally got the old one off and the new one on. Then he asked me for the end caps. I thought that they came with the cover. Nope! I had to go back to Home Depot, buy the end caps, remove a screw that I can't get back in but it looks okay. I am painting tomorrow. While he was here I asked him to measure the 6 ft unit in my master bath and told him to get whatever brand he likes to work with. So he will be back. No more plumbing projects for me.

I'm glad it's all working out for you :yay:
