Red Sox Win!!!!

I went to sleep around 11 sure that we had lost. I was happily surprised this morning. I have two questions regarding baseball in general. First why did they have to change a 4:30 start on Saturday to after 8pm. My dd8 really wanted to watch the game. She can watch the beginning now but won't make it to the end.

The second question is something dd asked me. I've always lived in MA/NH and have been a red sox fan. DD asked me if every team has a "nation" such as the red sox nation. I know baseball is big in NYC etc but does every team attract such a wide following like the Red Sox Nation?

Waking up this morning I thought I may have only been dreaming, but they really did win! I cannot believe they were down 7-0 in the seventh, with only seven outs left to a loss, and they came back to beat Tampa 8-7. AMAZING!!!!

GO RED SOX!!!

I think Red Sox Nation is unique in several ways. First, devoted fans were desperately waiting for a win for almost a century (1918-2004)! My father lived his entire life without ever seeing them win it all. This was the case for generations of Red Sox fans - year after year they were bitterly disappointed, yet they never lost hope.

Then of course, there's the whole issue of the Babe :rolleyes1 (being sold to the Yankees for peanuts to finance a Broadway play; you know, the Curse of the Bambino and all...) And Fenway Park is one of the oldest ballparks in the country where going to your first game remains a rite of passage for scores of little New Englanders, just like it was for their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents when they were little.

Loving the Red Sox is one of the most passionate traditions there is around here!

Even this die hard Chicago baseball fan stayed up to watch this game!!!

Well, they made it to the Series in recent history ('67, '75, '86........), so there was a reason for hope.

The Cubs have only sniffed it once in the last 64 years. Now, the White Sox had gone since '59 before making it, and ultimately took it in '05, so maybe there's reason to believe.

Anyway, unbelievable comeback last night. Glad I didn't turn it off. But do the Sox have the same magic they had in '04 to continue on? . . .

I am SO, so glad that DH and I stuck with the game last night. It was so exciting! We were jumping all around the house and screaming after they won.

Of course, I am so very, very tired at work today! Thankfully it seems that everyone else is too!

I shut it off in the seventh inning when it was 7-0! :headache: I couldn't believe it when I saw it crawl across the bottom of the screen on the news this morning. What a game!!! Watch out Tampa, now we're on a roll!!

That was us! Even if we go to bed, we usually put it on to fall asleep, even if they are losing, so the crowd noise will wake us if anything big happens...I really had discounted them though; it would have been one thing if their bats were awake in the other games, but they had been doing NOTHING! So I saw it on the news this morning and ran back into the bedroom to tell DH, who immediately put NESN on.
Go BIG PAPI!

Simple answer: No. Just check out some Sox away games. There are often more Sox fans than home team fans. It is crazy. It is history. It is life here.

We went to a Baltimore/Sox game last year in Balt. The Inner harbor was wall-to-wall Sox fans. Couldn't get into a restaurant, couldn't even get into the aquarium. Several of the vendors in the Inner Harbor area said it is the biggest weekend of the year when the Sox are in town. The Ballpark was so full of Sox fans, I said to DH, this is more Sox fans than you get at Fenway 'cause the STADIUM is bigger! And it is true!

The Cubs have a great following too, I believe, but it's not a "blood-type" like the Red Sox.

It was awesome! I am so glad we stayed up to watch it. I am now an official JD Drew fan. :worship:

Go Sox!!!!

It was a beautiful evening last night in Boston and I had windows open. I guess I was screaming a lot, I had no idea how loud. DH thought the neighbors would be worried, lol. Big Papi's 3 run homer, the incredible hit by Coco after nine pitches which tied the game, the missed throw to first when Youk got on base, and JD DREW!!! A two run homer AND the game winning hit to drive home Youkalis. UN-FREAKIN-BELIEVABLE. :jumping1: :hyper:

It's going to be tough tomorrow. Beckett simply has not been Beckett this year and we know he is injured and in terrible pain right now.

Maybe he should wear the bloody sock!

Yes, other teams have "nations," not all of them call their followings such. I know the Cards do.

The top drawing teams on the road are usually the Yankees, Sox, Cubs, and Cardinals. Remember, the Cards always had the Midwest and good portion of the south going back. What constitutes Red Sox nation is the fact they appeal to the entire New England area which doesn't have a team to call their own, and over the years they've naturally spread about the US. The Yankees of course have an immense base in town which has spread, combined with 27 Championships garnering masses of fans from other areas. The Cubs grabbed the nation with WGN back in the early 80s, broadcasting to areas which traditionally never had access. LA has a nice following with ex-Brooklyn holdouts (similiar to Giants fans), and of course, the sheer size of LA. Atlanta cultured a nice following too during the 90's.

Well, congrats to the Red Sox for making it as far as they did!:cheer2:
I hope they enjoy some well earned time off this winter!:woohoo:
See you back in Fort Myers for spring training!
