Recommendations for a small, lightweight, foldable scooter

As a category those scooters are more suseptible to breaking and are more expensive to fix. Warranty tends to be parts only with 2 service calls required to fix it. I made the mistake of not buying a service contract.

The lithium battery they use are more expensive then the SLA battery used by the transportable units like the Pride Go Go.

I have the Pride iGo scooter.

It's similar to other foldable scooters. After it folds you can split in half each half weighs less then 35 lbs. The battery weighs less then 5 lbs. You can remove the battery and charge it off the scooter, if that works better for you.

Skip the accessories. Most of them have to be removed when you fold the scooter. Get a water bottle with a loop and hang it over the handle bars. Instead of a basket hang a backpack on the back of the seat.

It's great if you need the ability to easily transport it in a small trunk. Offset that against reliability, cost and battery life.

Why foldable? I have a GoGo Elite 3 Wheel Traveler that I LOVE! It’s not foldable but it does come apart for easy transport.

I have a TravelScoot, which I love, but haven't flown with yet. Search this forum for Mamabunny's posts, which are extensive. It may be easier to search her scooter names...Angus or Max. Those are older models. The newest TravelScoot version is the Escape.

A hotel elevator in Spain wasn't deep enough unless I folded the scooter.

A different hotel. The elevator was small. The doors were 90°apart. Folding the scooter was the only way to get in and out of the elevator.

Fold it, trolly mode then roll it up the ramp on a Disney bus behind scooters using the tie down spots.

Fold it when in a very small hotel room or in a location where finding an out of the way convenient and easy place to put it isn't evident

Room in your trunk for other stuff.

Things to look for. Some of the earlier models don't have reverse. Fred Flintstone reverse.

Some have the same auto braking operation full size scooters have. Some have hand operated brakes, like bicycles.

The Golden Technologies (not to be confused with Gold Mobility) Buzzaround CarryOn is a nice scooter, they are also coming out with one later this year that will be an HD version with a 400 lb weight capacity. 47.5 lbs for the heaviest piece. 14 mile operating range, I believe they have up to 18 miles with extended batteries, but the extended batteries may not be airline approved.

Are the foldable scooters as comfortable as the break apart ones (like the go go pride or Golden technologies buzz around)? I am specifically thinking about for a long park day. My husband's scooter is nearing it's replacement time. I would love to get him a foldable one just to take up less space in the house/car.

Honestly, that is going to depend on the person, best items to go to a local medical supply store and test them all out.

Not as comfortable as the captains chair on the Pride units. Weight and size issues. You can buy a gel cushion for some additional comfort. Pride sells one or buy one that's the right size.

Or Spend the money to overhaul your current ECV.

THAT SAID my wife has never complained about the iGo seat. It's more then OK.

Scooters like the Pride Go Go traveler gives you value, battery life and durability.

Foldable offers compact sizing. Only buy foldable if it's necessary.

The Golden Tech.scooter mentioned by PP folds but doesn't split. Great if you can easily handle 50 lbs. The Heaviest piece drops to 30-35 if you buy a unit which splits.

Call a vendor like Spinlife.com. They sell every brand and can help with recommendations.

Buy a service contract. The factory warranty is only for parts.

My unit was damaged twice by airlines. Three if you count the time it probably broke but I didn't notice it soon enough to claim.

The company which coordinates the claim told me they get a lot of claims with the foldable scooters. The technician went so far as suggesting buying a backup scooter. He doesn't sell scooters.

Yes, you are right it doesn't come apart. DH feels the scooters that split apart are better too and easier for him, but the OP specifically asked for foldable, which is why I mentioned the one I did.

And good catch on the warranty being only for parts, they bury that in the fine print, don't they?

I wasn't clear. Scooters like Pride iGo fold then can split in 2. It's definitely a folding scooter, that can split if weight is an issue

Just be aware that when you split the iGo, the heaviest piece is just over 32 pounds. The heaviest piece on the Elite Traveler (or is it Traveler Elite? I have one and keep messing up the name) is 25 pounds, OK for my 74 yo DH.

Thanks for the info!

I said foldable because I wasn't sure how else to word it. We usually drive so I would need to put it in a SUV(GMC Acadia).

I’ve put mine in the trunk of a small Prius before - now I drive a Honda CRV and only need to remove the seat and fold down the tiller - it fits great.

I also have a Travelscoot, and I agree it's been a life changing purchase. Even with the battery, it weighs under 35 pounds WITHOUT collapsing or disconnecting parts. I lower the handlebar and put it in the back of my small SUV. Haven't flown with it, but have read of many who have. It is quite pricey however. I don't regret a penny since I finally broke down and got it around a month before my husband was hospitalized (in a BIG hospital) for almost 4 months. Having B.B. allowed me to visit him daily. I've had her for almost 5 years without a problem.

Having said that, I also purchased another scooter for my son. He ONLY uses one in the parks, so I got him a SuperHandy for less than $500. Also lightweight, but a little more difficult to get in to the car. Battery doesn't last as long (but it comes with two), no platform or basket for putting "stuff" and probably much less durable, but it works very well for what we bought it for.
