I need to get another battery though, so I'm going to go over the $1,000 I was seeing if I could stay under for starters.

Playing around with things this morning, reading through the manual, playing around some more, reading more through the manual...

Go to Sterlingtek for extra batteries. Inexpensive, but quality.

Check the mAh on your current battery (it is listed on the back of the battery). The higher the number the longer the battery will last before needing to be charged. The one at sterlingtek is 1100mAh. On ebay there are Canon brand batteries for more money but are only 750mAh.

LOL; I just ordered a second lens for my XT, and have stopped tallying the cost-to-date!!!!

I bought a spare battery from SterlingTek, it arrived quickly and works great!! No problems at all.

Third nod towards sterlingteck. The canon battery was like $30 or $50 dollars. At sterlingtek I got 2 batts and an ac/dc charger. Now I can charge in the car on trips. Very handy...
