Real aligators in Aligator Bayou at POR?

::yes:: There are GATORS in every body of water in the state of FLORIDA! And...YES, there are some rather "large" adult gators residing in the Sassagoula river canals which runs off the main route between POR/DTD. In fact, there are DISNEY-FRIENDLY signs posted at the entrance to some of these canals, which feed off this river. They are painted with the image of a LARGE friendly-looking smiling gator, standing upon his hind legs, with a bold RED CIRCLE around him and one RED LINE through him. I asked a castmember driving the express about these signs one day, and she told us there are LOTS of VERY large adult gators living JUST OFF the river in these waterways.
She has seen them on the banks of the canals, and also basking/floating on the surface of the water.

DH enjoys fishing in rivers (catch and release), and frequently sat at the edge of the Sassagoula across from Old Man Island late in wee hours (whenever we visited this resort). On one occasion, he was sitting in a chair about 5 feet from the water's edge, when he "felt" something odd. The water rippled ever so slightly, and everything became DEAD SILENT. He calmly but rapidly moved away from the water's edge, and the river. He has always used great caution and awareness while engaging in this activity. He too, has encountered gators in various locations on Disney property.

As he was climbing the bank, he noticed a POR service associate sitting in a cart which had stopped on the bridge above where he had been fishing. He told my husband a huge gator had been "watching" him from just beneath the water's surface, about three feet from the shore. This man could see him from above, and noticed him the same time my husband was moving away. He told DH the gator was most likely preparing to "lunge" and grab him if the opportunity arose (if DH went close to the edge, or turned around, washed his hands in the water, etc.). This man said he could barely make-out the top of the massive head, as it was about midnight, and the water is black/brackish with tannin, etc. He was in a state of momentary shock, as he was almost in disbelief as to what he was seeing. He told DH he even wiped his eyes, and stared again...to insure he was truly seeing a gator. DH informed him although the eyes of this reptile never broke the surface of the water, he could "sense" his presence directly in front of him. 10,000+ years of evolution rarely error/prove to be wrong. :confused3

This man informed DH the gators "frequently" loiter and troll through the river, mostly at night (as they do not like the boats). They are opportunists, and look for an "easy meal" whenever they can find it. :confused3 My husband told this man he had noticed everything go "silent" in that moment when he knew something was wrong. It's as if all the creatures scatter/hide and pipe-down when this creature comes along. Even the crickets stopped chirping.

We have had even CLOSER encounters with Gators on Disney property & surrounding areas in Florida, and I've posted some photos of these incidents in the past. Be very cautious when ever you are near ANY water in Florida, as Gators are transitory and extremely crafty when it comes to accessing areas which appeal to them. They have phenomenal eyesight under the water, and an even better olfactory skills. Opportunistic as they may be, they are also tremendously adept predators. I am always on the lookout for them, wherever we travel on/around water. Never, ever permit your children to play unsupervised near an open body of water while visiting Florida (even on WDW property). And, please...use caution with respect to your own safety. ;)

A very good reminder by Dreamflight. The gators are no longer afraid of humans because so many people, especially at Disney, feed them. This makes them percieve every human as something that will give them a quick and easy meal.

I recall driving down the drive way of Shades of Green and seeing a big ol' gator basking on the green lawn just about 20 ft from the drive way. We pulled over to watch him from afar. Some teenage girls behind us, obviously with the mind set that "nothing bad happens at Disney", got out of their car and ran towards him. The gator, being the gentleman that he was, slithered off into the pond. Good thing for those girls. I wouldn't have believe it if I didn't see it. I have seen plenty of gators at WDW, I have just never seen guests running up to greet them.
Oh BOY...I HAVE!!! Once, on "Spring Break" in Florida, I witnessed something incredibly ridiculous, and similar to your story! We were staying at a resort hotel, with a large river running near/behind the property. Some of us had gathered near the bridge to see the numerous LARGE ADULT MALE GATORS appear, as they did every evening. They apparently had grown accustomed to humans, and lacked a natural fear. It was also breeding season, and the "bulls" would make a low growling/rumbling sound, which vibrates the water...causing it to "dance" as it resonates off their back. It was truly something to witness.

Well, in the midst of this event...some (apparently UI of a type of narcotic/alcohol) student bolted into the middle of the crowd wearing ONLY his white brief underware, a belt and a knife (in a fashionable holder attached to the belt). Before anyone could even react, he quickly jumped on the bridge, and announced he was going to "hunt himself some gators" and then plunged into the river! As he did this...all the gators gathered & visible around this area just moments before---SIMULTANEOUSLY DISAPPEARED BENEATH THE SURFACE!! :earseek: When he hit the water, I believe the shock of what he had done instantly sobered him a bit--and as soon as he surfaced he yelled in a panicked high-pitched tone, "Where are they?!?" Some guy laughed and answered, "They are all right underneath you man, coming for thier dinner!" This kid literally WALKED ON WATER to exit this river! He was on the bank in a flash, blood fully drained from his face, bravado 100% absent, and his underwear completely VANISHED!!!! LOL... :rolleyes1 :rotfl2: :rotfl: His BELT/KNIFE were still oddly around his waste! It was the craziest/wierdest thing I'd ever witnessed, and probably tops most everything to date! :p :teeth:

Stay away from the lakes, ponds and other wild bodies of water. Gators come out at dusk to feed.

this thread has me creeped out!!!! seriously!!!

Years ago, my sister and I stayed at the Golf Resort (I don't know what that resort is called now.) We saw an alligater.

dreamflight99-Wow. You told those stories so well, you gave me chills! :earseek: Whenever we stay at POFQ I always wonder what lurks beneath the surface of the Sassagoula River. I'm always very aware of where my kids are, but when we are near the river, I am extra cautious. We've never spotted an alligator in WDW, yet. I had a nightmare a few months ago about an alligator lunging out of the the Sassagoula at my boys, it was awful! After that nightmare, and after reading threads like this on here, alligators officially creep me out!

We live in Florida. Our subdivision has several retention ponds. We can only report gators over 4 feet for removal from the ponds. Gators under 4 feet are protected in residential neighborhoods. I have seen small gators in the retention ponds around the outskirts of WDW property. I have never seen a gator in the water at any of the resorts or parks. However, I have seen plenty of snakes. I've seen 2 at BB while on the lazy river, I've seen a couple at MK and AK. They were black racers, non-poisonous, but scared me anyway.

I love the gator at BCV. I make it a point not to leave Disney without seeing Al E. Gator each trip. I know they removed a gator last fall at BCV, but guess what, he's been spotted again (or a good look alike). I just tell myself it's the same Al E. Gator. (No I don't feed them, lol, just like to watch them from the bridge. )

I've seen them along the edge of the brush/water as the boat passed to carry us to MGM. The friendship Captain informed me they are "always" invading the lakes and areas around the parks/resorts. I've even seen them in the water under the canal which runs through YC/WDW Dolphin (near the entrance to the property--where the employees park and pass over a bridge). I've seen them in ponds scattered all over the property, and even near the poly in the large lake the ferry uses to transport guests to/from WL & TTC. Security informed us on one occasion, they have had to remove several from the lake in the MK (around TS island), and the moat around the castle (very fitting~!). :goodvibes

Yes, they are everywhere in WDW and Florida. BUT...the water in the sassagoula river seems to be the most freaky when it comes to this subject. The color lends an ominous appearance to an otherwise serene setting, making me leery to venture too close. I am always reminded of the scenes from the discovery channel, which highlight the massive "salties" of Australia as they LUNGE from just beneath the surface to GRAB their prey by the head before disappearing into the blackness!! :earseek: NO THANKS!! It would be a sure-way to RUIN a VACATION!! :p

where is the sassagoula river?? so I know this sounds silly, and probably
more than a little paranoid...but have any ever to your knowledge been
found at SAB??? :worried:

Just came home this afternoon - as far as gators - we saw 3 at Shades of Green - 2 on the pathway that will take you to the Poly.

The other is in a "canal" on the road that Fort Wilderness is on. It is across from the golf course right next to Fort Wilderness (Eagle Pines maybe??). He is usually laying on right side of the bank if the canal is on your right. We saw him there in Nov, Feb, last week & then saw him again today as we were leaving WDW to come home!

He's the real thing. Some days he's there - others he's not. :earseek:

The Sassagoula River runs from Riverside past the Port Orleans French Quarter down to Downtown Disney past Old Key West.

No alligators in SAB but there have been a few snakes and ducks.

This may be a silly question but since we are talking bodies of water, has anyone every seen one at the 'beaches' at CBR?

Okay, and I had just been thinking about staying at POR for the first time on my trip with my DS next year! Now I'm seriously considering NOT staying there! :scared1:

I was just wondering the same thing about the CBR. With all the beaches right on the water, and playground real close, maybe I should think twice about letting the kids play there?!? Any one see any there before? :scared1:
