I was at the local bookstore today and picked up a copy of Understanding Exposure. While there I was looking at books on my Canon XTi. There were two there - one was the Digital Rebel XTi/400D, Digital Field Guide by Charolotte Lowrie, the other was by Michael Guncheon and a company called Magic Laterns. Does anyone have either of these two books and which do you prefer and why? I need to get to know my camera better and the manual only does a so-so job of that - and I need more visuals!!:goodvibes
Thanks for your help and suggestions!

I have the field guide for the XT. I did find it helpful; easier to read than the manual that comes with the camera!

She does explain some things beyond the camera, such as talking about exposure, etc. She also provides some photographic examples to illustrate her points.

My rating would be 4 stars at best, because I thought she could still go into even further detail. However, it really was helpful when I first got my XT!

I bought mine on Amazon; I remember reading less than stellar reviews about the Lantern series at the time.

Good luck!

Thank you for your feedback Jen. I looked thru the Latern series, but I really liked the full color graphics in the Field Guide. I didn't really have time to sit and evaluate both books as I had the kids with me at the time - that's why all the questions! I was able to give both books only a quick glance at best!! Thanks again- I think I'm going back for the Field Guide this weekend.:thumbsup2

I picked up the Magic Lantern publication for my 30D. It was useful but it, too, does not go into any great detail about creativity. It's a rehas of the manual, for the most. One thing it did, I noticed, was help he decipher the manual. Once I read the ML pub, it seemed I understood the owner's manual better. I am sticking with the owner's manual for now. Easier to carry and is needed on the road for those times you can't remember how to ...

BTW: One more post and I am a DIS Vet --- Wahoooo!

Thanks everyone. I think I'm leaning toward the Charlotte Lowrie book. It has very good visuals - which I really need!;) I plan to take a day next week and take my camera with me and spend some time in the bookstore, comparing the two books. It's just a tad hard to give anything in depth concentration with 3 kids in tow!! (each of course wanting you to check out the book they're getting as well!):goodvibes
