Think you may be asking the wrong person this question. I'd put it out there addressed to "anyone who's visited Key West." Shirley from the Perfect Gift is from Key West and could probably help you if she's lurking.
I think Kelly's Place is Kelly McGillis (John Travolta's wife) restaurant. Don't know any more than that, sorry
Hi there - Kelly's Beach Club is owned by Kelly McGillis - Her first which is just known by Kelly's Restaurant and also Kelly's Caribbean Bar & Brewery is located at 303 Whitehead Street which was the Pan Am office during the 30's (well that is my earliest recollection) and 40ths --Kelly's Beach Club is located at 1405 Duval Street which is on the opposite end of Duval Street -in fact it is located on South Beach - its a restaurant sitting on South Beach - its new since the old one got knocked down by Hurricane George. Its nice IF the wind is not blowing from the North - was there on March 24th and had problems with being very windy - great food.
I have been to Kelly's on Whitehead Street since I wanted to check out how the Pan Am office, where my aunt so many year ago, worked and I wanted to see how it looked - I found it refreshing tho kinda of pricey BUT remember I mostly to go to "locals" hangouts ---To those that are going around May 11--the class of 52 will be hanging out in and out of lower Key West - even going on the conch train - believe me you will know these conchs - if you happen to run into them- introduce yourselves or most likely they will themselves - tell them you kinda know me (Shirley Nelson - class of 53) and they will all be thrilled to enlighten you on anything you want to know about Key West --but then conchs are very friendly and thrilled to answer any questions about Key west way back when --Meanwhile have a wonderful time and stay safe.
Always
Shirley
Shirley, how interesting about being in the old Pan Am office. Pan Am was one of the original international airlines, and I'm sure Juan Tripp was very instrumental in the old seaplane flights from Key West to Havana. But I love having insider's trivia like that.
cmatt, I have the web site (although I think I already emailed it to you), but I don't know anything else about it. For anyone else who's interested:
Hello Dave- hope all is well on your end - Whitehead Street was a very interesting area at one time since it was right next to the Gulf side - this made it very easy for the pirates to come ashore back in the time of pirates - Key west was nicknamed Cayo Hueso which meant streets of bones -- the Pam Am office was very small and I can remember my aunt working there in the late 30's - 40's many are responsible for keeping the "old town" side well perserved and the history kept which I was so glad to see - you will still see many of the old houses with widow's walk where many nights were spent by the wives looking across the ocean for sight of their loved ones - I was born and raised on Whitehead for most part - Key West was divided into sections - such as Bahama Village, Latin quarters, Jewish quarters etc, but everyone was entwinted with each other - conchs were very clanish and had a hard time with "strangers". We saw very little out of KW. anyhow if you would like more info on the pam am building, will get it for you next time I am down - which is next month.
Meanwhile take care and warmest regards to you and yours.
Always
Shirley
