Thoughts on Cars Land replacing Tom Sawyer Island at The MK

I loved the lack of development on Tom Sawyer Island and the peace in the middle of controlled pandemonium but oh well guess it’s time for progress to envision another look.
Me too! Why can't disney just put cars land on another site, and keep this one? They have plenty of land but seem to like to build over or rebuild older attractions. Just because TSI isn't a thrill ride doesn't mean it isn't enjoyed for what it is.

I think they could easily still keep the "river" itself, which has the key function of looking pretty at night AND providing a place for rainwater to drain into when the sky opens up as it so often does in Central Florida. If the large boat was removed they could just bridge the river to let guests cross to Cars Land the same way as they do from the hub to the rest of the "lands".

Either way, PLEASE don't concrete the entire area. The amount of concrete that is there already creates a such a heat island that heat-related illness is a huge problem in the Florida parks. They need to put that vaunted Imagineering to work to create and install porous walking surfaces all over the parks, which would greatly reduce runoff and make them considerably more comfortable in Florida's heat and humidity. They definitely have staff with the smarts to do it; so lets see it.

TSI needs the "I" to be updated, not demolished.

This proposed attraction is more of an Adventureland product. When I think of Frontierland, I envision a pioneer and exploration into an unknown region associated with a time period. The time period of the current Frontierland is established by the location and feeling; I think the 3 elements are intertwined (time, location, feeling).

Glorified dune buggies racing around hills and valleys isn't very pioneering to me.

Agreed.. I had posted this on a previous page, but it can be done, & still get a lot of land to use for the new areas.

Green is filled in with dirt (to become Cars/Villains)
Yellow is new walking path (& extended) to make it easy to access both sides as well as the new areas
Black is a walking bridge (moving), similar to the one they use already for the train to cross the boat path to 7 Seas lagoon.

Just thought I would bump this since there has been discussions of the Muppets on this thread as well... The Monsters Inc. land will be taking over the Muppets area, but the Muppets are moving:

"To make way for the monsters, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends will be moving right along to Sunset Boulevard! But there’s more to the story: The Muppets will be taking over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival!"

As I have said, Tom Sawyer Island should stay, and Cars Land should be built on undeveloped land on the borders of the Magic Kingdom. I see that is exactly what they are doing with Villains Land, so baffles me why they aren't also doing that with Cars Land.

I bet you a Dole Whip it comes down to $$$$.

That's what I don't understand. I would think they would save money by not having to tear out the existing attraction. Construction costs for the new should be nearly identical no matter where they build it. I mean, they have owned the land for what, over 50 years?

In order to get to where Villains land is proposed to be requires enough means of egress to avoid bottlenecks where possible. Most pathways in WDW are 20 feet or wider. In order to have a pathway next to HM or BTM you also have to consider clearances from the queues and attraction. That also cuts into the clearances for the 27 foot wide Liberty Belle.

At a certain point you run out of feasible clearances without also substantially shrinking TSI to the point where it’s left with very little infrastructure to still be able to functionally keep the riverboat.

So the decision comes down to, do we leave the island and boat even smaller than before to build beyond it, or replace it and provide means to access additional land in another expansion at a later time. Also factoring in that there has been diminishing guest utilization of the riverboat and TSI over the years.

We had no plans on going to WDW this year, but after reading of changes to some of our nostalgic favorites we booked a quick 3 night stay last night to see Muppet theatre, Tom Sawyer Island, Dinosaur & Tree of Life one more time in their current incarnation.
We leave in just under 3 weeks, making this the most last minute trip we've ever planned. Oh well! Only live once, and since we didn't have plans on going anytime soon we will at least get to see these attractions one more time.

Disney officially responded to the questions with SFWMD who now has 30 days to review.

Latest drawings do show a complete removal of the River to the lock.

I didn't know something was happening to the Tree of Life. I don't see how they can possibly touch that.

Chances are folks will have a lot of time to say goodbye. I doubt any earth moves on this for another year.
It’s not the earth we’ll miss, it’s the water, and they may have to drain it first thing before they can do much else. :(
But I do hope it gets pushed back to 2026. lol

Yea that would crush the parks’ vibe. It’s the bugs that are going away. ;)
