I like the air hogs remote control vehicles for older kids. Ds8 has the air hogs heli and it's a lot of fun. Even the grown ups wNt to play with it.
I got into RC airplanes in 2006. I went to the local airfield when they were having their annual airshow/funfly. My daughter absolutely loved watching. A hobby store had a tent set up and I was talking with the owner. He showed me this little tiny airplane and told me how great it flies. It was just a toy. I was skeptical.
That little airplane was an Airhogs Aero Ace. I came home from the airshow thing and googled for some info on RC completely wiping the little toy from my mind, wanting more information on actual hobby RC flying.
I found a huge forum on RC, much like this forum and about the same size, massive. The first thing I find on this forum of extreme very expensive hobby RC fliers is a thread on this little toy airplane. It wasn't just a thread, it was a huge thread. It wasn't just a huge thread, it was about 1500 posts long. It wasn't just
a 1500 post thread on this little toy airplane, it was the
3rd opening of this thread! The other 2 threads were closed because they had reached the maximum of 2500 posts!
These hobby RC flight guys were going nuts over this Airhogs toy. These are guys with $1000 controllers. These are guys with hundreds and hundreds of dollars into their big gas powered airplanes. These are guys who in other threads talk about "sneaking by" another airplane past their wives because they already have 20, 30, 40 airplanes in their garages. They are all going nuts over this little $30 toy airplane.
I bought one.
I lied. I didn't buy one, I bought two! One for me and one for my daughter.
It was shocking how this little thing flew (no wind at all, mind you.) I got hooked. I was outside in the back yard every night in the evening after dinner at 34 years old with my stupid little toy airplane (my daughter didn't want anything to do with it.)
My wife one evening opened the kitchen window and yelled out at me asking why I have the stupidest looking grin on my face and to tell me I look like an idiot. I pointed up in the sky and told her to look. Something about the two little motors, something about the frequency of sound they were emitting I guessed, drew..... birds! Some kind of swallow. I don't know where they came from, but within 5 minutes of flying my stupid little toy airplane, I had literally 20 birds all swooping around. It was crazy, it was hysterical, it was a blast!
I spent all of the summer of 2006 evenings out in the backyard dogfighting with swallows with a stupid little toy airplane and I was having the time of my life!
So, yes, some of those Airhogs airplanes are a blast. They really do fly and fly well. I have to say though, I also have the Airhogs helicopter and it isn't nearly as fun. It is difficult to control in the house because of tight space and flying it outside is impossible (even the hint of wind and you can't fly it as well as it is infra-red instead of RF, so it hardly picks up the signal from the controller when it's light out.)
Even though the helicopter can be fun, the little Airhogs airplane called the Aero Ace is really the top of the leader in the Airhogs lineup. The Aero Ace would be a great gift for any child.
