Raw Vegetables or Fruit That Makes You Sick

I ate some raw pineapple at lunch yesterday, and I was so sick by the end of the day that I went straight to bed when I got home from work (before 5 PM). I had an inkling that raw pineapple didn't agree with me, as I've had mixed drinks with pineapple juice previously and it upset my stomach, but I can eat cooked pineapple (on pizza, for example) and have no issues.

I have the same problem with raw broccoli. I can eat steamed broccoli just fine but raw broccoli really upsets my stomach, pretty much the exact same symptoms as the pineapple.

I did a little research today but can't figure out what the commonality is between the two foods. Any suggestions?

I don't know what pineapple and brocolli have in common. I have a very hard time with raw pineapple. It is extremely acidic and upsets my stomach.

The only raw food I have problems with all the time is peaches. Sadly, I can't eat raw peaches. They make me extremely sick. Oddly, I can eat cooked peaches with no problem.

You could have something called: Oral Allergy Syndrome.

I can only eat pretty much cooked fruits or veggie now as the heat from cooking breaks down whatever enzyme I am allergic too. People who are "Raw Foods" fanatics (who ONLY eat everything - and I mean EVERYTHING) raw, all thought I was making the symptoms up. But an allergist clarified for me, this IS a real allergy in some people.

I'm not at all stopping the discussion on this thread, just here is an old thread where we discussed it and you can read to see if any of the symptoms other people mentioned correspond to you in other ways. :goodvibes

I have a mango allergy. I've noticed in the last five or so years that mangos are in MUCH more food than they used to be. Did some political boundary open up our trade with a mango producing nation? They're even sold in McDonalds now!

To those of you with raw pineapple issues, do you also have an issue with canned pineapple? Raw pineapple can actually break down steak. It destroys (everyone's) tastebuds but taste buds grow back so quickly that we don't notice. Its a very volatile fruit, so to speak. However, the destructive component in the pineapple goes away by the time canned pineapple is consumed. I'd definitely give it a try!

I just heard a story on NPR about mango sales in the US. First, no, they've been sold here for decades and decades, and that mangoes sold in the US were originally nealy all Fla.-grown. However, hurricane Andrew decimated the mango groves and NAFTA, soon after, opened the floodgates for imported mangoes. The mangoes imported are the Fla. varietals though, as the Fla. varietals were bred back in the '50s to have the deep red tones on the skin, the extra sweetness, etc

The mango lobby is trying to do what the banana lobby did decades and decades ago, when bananas were considered an unusual tropical thing, and get the fruit more popular.

They said that mango consumption is up but in things; people tend to not buy mangoes much because, according to the nice people talking out my radio, they don't know what to do with them (to be fair, they had interviews with three people saying they'd never bought a mango because they didn't know what to do with them, so apparently true).

They also said that there's a new Indian varietal coming to market sometime soon that's moving away from the varietal we have now, that was developed when they tried to make things more bland and sweet to appeal to the U.S. market. The Indian one is supposed to be intensely, sharply, flavourful.

Thanks for the link, I just read the thread and there seem to be a lot of us who can eat foods that are cooked or steamed, but not raw.

I don't think my symptoms point to Oral Allergy Syndrome because I don't have the burning/itching mouth problem. My problem seems to come from digesting the food. My stomach gets so swollen and painful, and it felt like pressure in my chest like indigestion. I was so sick yesterday, and when I went in to work this morning you could tell that I'd been ill.

I once got terrible intestinal issues from eating raw spinach. Ever since then, I've been afraid to have spinach salad, although cooked spinach is fine. I also recently learned that raw cherries wreak havoc on my stomach. My dad has the same problem with them.

I don't have stomach problems from mangos but I have developed a nasty skin allergy to them. Unfortunately I have a mango tree in my back yard that decided this was the year to produce an over abundance so I tried to make mango jam (and I don't even like mangos)

No other fruit or veggie causes me stomach or other problems but for some reason I think I may get stomach irritation from beef sometimes.

Raw veggies and some fruits make my throat swollen and itchy. Cooked, they are fine, but raw I can't eat. Mostly melon, cucumbers, carrots, pea pods.

 That sounds like the way Coca-Cola can take the rust off of a coin.

The canning process requires a bit of heating. So the heat is just enough to heat the enzymes we are sensitive or allergic to, to break them down.

OUCH!

For those with a mango allergy, sometimes it is just a problem with the oil in the skin and not the mango itself. It is actually quiet common for some strange reason based on what I have read. If I cut a piece of mango and eat it with the skin on, my lips start to sting and swell. If I cut the mango off the skin (or better yet, have DH do it for me so I don't have to touch the mango at all) I can eat them all day long. :confused3 So odd but I found a forum years ago where a bunch of people noticed the same thing so I felt better knowing it wasn't just me. Glad I can eat them. I buy dozens upon dozens of them during the summer.

Buy some disposable plastic gloves from the dollar store. :thumbsup2

I have an intolerance to bananas . The give me horrible stomach pains , and it takes hours for the pain to subside.

I like peppers (yellow, red bell peppers)--but they really upset my tummy. So I have stopped eating them.

Also, raw zucchini seems to be an issue. But it might have been that I was eating too much at one time. (I tend to consume a whole vegetable in one seating sometimes--like a whole cucumber or formerly a whole zucchini as it makes for a nice snack.)

And I will never eat eggplant again. It did something to my tongue when it was cooked. I Swear it was like bees stinging it. I had to drench it in ketchup so none would get on my tongue. After being forced to eat it fried 2-3 x per week for all of 3rd grade. I will never eat it again.

My list is Bananas, Watermelon, Broccoli, Garbanzo beans, and Avocado. Oddly enough, when the garbanzos are in hummus or the avocadoes are made into guacamole, I'm absolutely fine. Otherwise those all leave me with the worst stomach pains :(
