Rape Attempt at POP

I travel solo several times a year to Disney and I have always felt safe, until this time.........I stayed at Pop and felt that I had an extremely long walk from the parking lot to my building6, I just felt very uneasy late at night and I also sent this in the survey that came once I returned home. So although it is hard to believe I could see it happening especially if you were coming from a parking lot, and there also seems to be a lot of "dark areas" away from the hub bub.

I agree about the dark areas around the world. Last December I was going from MGM to DTD. I went to the TTC thinking I could catch a bus from there. After finding it out I needed to go the Poly to catch a bus, I proceed through the back of the Poly resort towards the bus stop. I have to admit this was the first time I was uncomfortable at a Disney resort. It was dark and there was absolutely no one around. I didn't see anyone until I got to the bus stop at the front of the resort. I remember thinking that if something would happen, who would even know who I was or where I was. Yes the Poly is a beautiful resort but I will not take that path again. Just too dark and dangerous alone.

I agree. The path from the TTC to the Poly is not one you should take alone in the dark. It is isolated, bordered by much foliage and not well lit at night. I recently went to the Poly solo for the first time and for safety reasons did not take this path at night. If you are alone and need to get from the TTC to the Poly, take the resort monorail.

I can't believe that her husband was sleeping at 6:00pm.!! For us, there is still another good 7 hours left of the day. Its Disney, who sleeps!

We always do! We almost always take that famous "midday rest". If you had late dinner reservations or Pleasure Island plans, a nap before you go out (and after a hard, hot day at the parks) is just the ticket.

Why don't we all let this be a warning to us to be more careful and avoid questioning women's "stories". I think that is an insult to all women who have been assaulted.

Working in law enforcement for ten years, it never ceases to amaze me how many vulnerable people will put themeselves in bad positions. I have heard the story time and again about meeting a guy (unknown name) at a bar or whatever and then agreeing to meet by the pool, waterfront, whatever. Usually late when nobody else is around. The Halloway girl on vacation with her class met a boy which she knew nothing about. Its a shame people dont stop to think. I am not saying that this happened in the situation at POP Century.... Just an observation from cases I have handled. BE SAFE

I was at Pop in June & while there I met a guy (completely innocent lol) and we met by the water area on the bridge every night just to talk & hang out. Well I got there a bit early (we were meeting at midnight to hang for a bit) but I wanted some fresh air away from my friends first so I went at 11:30 to be myself for a few mins. Well almost immediately these two police officers came up to me and asked me tons of questions. They were asking me where I was from, who I was staying with, why I was by myself, why did they SEE me out there for the past two nights, then they asked to see my Room Key & State ID. At first I got kind of nervous because I had no idea why they were acting that way but then they said they just like to check up on people especially women out there alone. They said a lot of the college age groups go there & some end up drunk & then get into things they shouldn't be. Right at that point was when my friend (that guy) showed up, they then asked him the same questions- they even wrote down our room numbers! The guy was kinda aggrivated but at the same time, I guess I can't really complain. Everyone should feel safe at Disney, and you gotta do what you gotta do to keep people safe. So I hope things like this can prevent something horrible from actually happening. I will note though, for that week, we saw the police drive around the area so many times we lost count!

Judging by the area you were in, and the fact that they specifically mentioned college age girls getting into trouble, I'm going to say it wasn't so much for your safety from a would be attacker, but Disney's safety from a would be law suit. You see many college age people, and for some reason especially girls, get drunk and try to A) swim in hourglass lake or B) climb the "fence" for lack of a better term at the end of the generation gap bridge and go explore the other unfinished section of the POP resort. I can tell you cast members catch people trying to do one of those two things almost daily, and if you were out at night, in that area for several nights in a row they might have thought you were working up the nerve to try something, or watching cast member movement through the area etc.

It always amazes me how some people are so shocked by the idea that crimes can be committed or bad things can happen while people are on vacation.

I live in a beach resort town. I'm not a native, I moved here a few years ago. During the summer months, it totally shocks me how some tourists act. I can't tell you how many people cross the street without even looking to see if there's a car coming. Or the people who know each other from home and see each other from across the street and meet in the middle of the street (even with strollers!!!), oblivious to the fact that cars must screech to a halt to avoid making them a stain on the roadway.

People who have alarm systems at home leave their front doors open here while they are at the beach or out to dinner.

And Jerry Seinfeld had it oh-so-right in an old stand-up routine of his about people who bring their wallets to the beach and then stick the wallet in their shoe when they go into the water ... like a diabolical criminal mind would never think to look there.

No matter where we go, we are always in the real world. Even if we feel like we are on vacation, we are still in the real world. Cars can hit us. People can steal from us or harm us. We darn well shouldn't live like Nervous Nellies, but we also shouldn't vacation believing that our vacation dollars also buy us a protective bubble.

Criminals go on vacation, too. Sure, there are some who prey on vacationers, but there are others who are on vacation who find that, as much as they promise their family, they can't leave their work behind them at home. C'mon, who here hasn't snuck away from the family to check work voice mail or call the office to see if the world is getting by without us running it? I imagine some criminals might miss work, too ....

Good points for all of us to keep in mind. Let's face it....they can check resort id's all they want for incoming cars but there is NOTHING stopping anyone who wants to hop a Disney bus from being let into any resort on property.

You are so right. Criminals prey on vacationers because people on vacation are usually relaxed and have their guard down. I have known so many people who have had their bag stolen or been pickpocketed by thieves while away.

It's sad to think you can be a victim in "the happiest place on earth", but it's reality. :sad1:
