Random thoughts after recent visit to WDW

Just got back yesterday. My SO was at a conference. We did the parks together 2 days and I went by myself 2 days. No rhyme or reason to any of this … just thoughts that have popped into my head after spending lots of time in the parks last week:

Overall, parks are being better maintained than what I remember from my last visit. Main exception was the restrooms. Towel dispensers constantly empty, water splashed everywhere, some faucets not working properly. Many didn’t smell very good either.

CMs still quite friendly considering the recent tensions and the fact that they have to put up with so much idiocy from guests which I often witnessed!

Is that wall around ex-20K ever going to come down?

Had never seen Mickey’s Philharmagic before. Great fun!

For those of you who feel compelled to demonstrate to others your intimate knowledge of HM or TOT by talking along with the pre-show spiels which you know by heart because you’ve been through each attraction about 20 dozen times, trust me we’re all very impressed. Now please stop talking and let the rest of us soak up the experience!

Sorry, but I think $8 is a bit steep for parking. Not a very warm Disney welcome when you arrive on property and you’re having to fork over 8 hard-earned bucks right off the bat. I wondered how many potential Disney guests have been slighted and turned their cars around and gone elsewhere because of this.

I have driven in lots of U.S. cities and Orlando officially has the worst drivers of any U.S. city I’ve ever been in (I realize these are mostly tourists).

I realize this is probably pipe dreaming on my part but I hope they never touch Spaceship Earth. Refurbish it a bit, yes, but many of those sets are just too awesome to retire.

My favorite scene in POTC is the skeleton steering the boat near the beginning of the ride. Very other-worldly.

KTK tour was good but not quite what I was hoping. Rae, the guide, was great. She was very patient with some of the more “irksome” people that were on the tour. But more than half of the information shared on the tour was stuff I already knew. Plus, I think it would be neat to actually go behind the scenes of at least one attraction, rather than just riding through them. I also thought it would be cool to see the computer “nerve center” of the MK which, alas, was not part of the tour.

Splash Mountain is now my 2nd favorite ride at WDW, behind HM.

I liked Mission: Space. And I usually have a very sensitive stomach.

Still can’t get over how they ruined the Imagination ride. I gave it a second chance on this trip and can’t help but lament what it once was in comparison to what it is now.

La Nouba was great but not quite as good as the Vegas shows. Whereas the Vegas shows were more “adult,” they were a bit more artistic IMHO. La Nouba was geared toward kids a bit. Still very impressive and I loved the music.

Finally ……… weather was picture perfect. Not a drop of rain and perfect temps! Crowds very light at all parks except MK, where they were perfectly manageable. Despite my few rants above, all in all it was a great trip!

We also just got back yesterday from a seven night stay at POR. I agree with you about the crowds, they were great! They did seem to pick up quite a bit on Saturday, but all of the other days were wonderful. The weather couldn't have been better. It was a great trip.

Thanks for the peek into your vacation. Sounds like you did a lot and had a great time!

Do you remember if CoP was open while you were there? I really hope to take my DDad to see this attraction 12/5-12/15. (OMG - that's in 12 days :earseek: )

I think the wall around 20K might as well look like a tombstone "Behind this wall lies a great ride that was taken down for very un-great reasons, we're sorry"

I agree about the OLD JITI ride.....It use to be one of my fav's....the new one doesnt get going till the end when you enter figments world....My oldest son loved the old ride...My youngest did not get a chance to see it....

The price for parking is really not that bad compared to other places. Six Flags Georgia charges $12.00 for parking. If you stay on property you can drive and not get charged for parking, but I am glad your overall trip was great. I just wanted to let people know parking is more expensive other places.

I've had that happen quite a few times on Rock N Roller Coaster and it is very irritating!

The only thing that I have done on occasion is to give a little scream at the beginning of ToT when newbies think that there will be a drop. ;)

One of our trips on ToT last visit during the ride there were a few seconds of darkness, which I've never had before. When that happened I said "uh oh", not really trying to be funny, but everyone cracked up. Of course I wasn't giving anything away and I totally agree with you about the showoffs who talk through it.

T&B

Thanks for sharing your insights!

The parking price is pretty much on par with all the other theme parks we visit. I doubt anybody changes their mind about visiting based on the price to park.

I'm glad you liked Phiharmagic. I can't wait to see it again! :hyper:

Ever been to Boston? ;)

Also, I don't think $8 is that bad for parking. If you think about it, that's actually quite cheap for Disney--$8 would buy you a hot dog and a coke in MK. And as far as people turning around and leaving because of it... I don't doubt it's happened, but I don't think it's as common as you suspect.

Again, I live in Boston, where you have to pay $20 to $30 for 3 hours in a parking garage in the Prudential  Never again, ugh.

D4D, I'm pretty sure CoP was open on Thursday as I saw people crowded around it and CM's standing nearby, but I honestly don't remember if it was open the other days. I kept making a mental note to go back and see it since 1983 was the last time I ever saw CoP but I never made it back there.

Sorry I can't be of more help :(

Re: the bad drivers, I still have this terrifying image of watching this truck after suddenly deciding it needed to exit, swoop across five (5!!!) lanes of traffic during rush hour in order to barely make the exit ramp. My SO and I were clenching our teeth. Also, lots of tailgating in Orlando. And of course there's I-Drive ...

I have to admit I wasn't aware that theme parks charged that kind of money for parking now. I just kind of have a problem with "paying to go pay." Sort of like if Wal-Mart decided to charge for parking to one of its Super Centers. Except Wal-Mart is less fun than Disney of course. :teeth:

jonrex,

I agree with you 100% about Spaceship Earth. I like Test Track and Mission Space and I'm sure I'll like Soarin' too. But none of them make me cry. SSE is still the best attraction in Epcot (except for Illuminations). There are better thrills than acceleration.

FWIW, our local amusement park charges $9 for parking. Or is it $10? Fortunately we get season passes which include free parking.

Apparently they are actually doing something with 20K now. Maybe when they're finished with it, the walls will come down.

Very true. I rode it twice and it leaves you mesmerized. That's the Disney that I know.

Even though I did enjoy TT and MS very much, you just don't get that same feeling of awe walking off those rides like you did with the rides of the "old" Future World.

You might want to look into going on the Behind the Scenes Tour. It's almost 8 hours long, but includes lunch and a lot of behind the scenes info. When I took it, we went backstage at the American Adventure, Body Wars, DAKS control center under MK and some others I can't remember right now. Make sure you have your questions thought our ahead of time, or you won't remember them during the tour. If you have a good guide, there is so much info given out it's hard to keep track of everything!

Actually, I think the $8. parking is a good thing. It lets people know right up front that they're coming to Disney and EVERYTHING is going to be expensive that day. Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.:teeth:

FWIW, DL charge $9. per day!!!

I completely agree with you about SSE (DH and I call it the big ball). That is our favorite ride of all time. I also can't get over how they ruined the Figment ride. That used to rank right up there with SSE, but now it stinks. I wish they would just put the old ride back in. Glad you had fun!

When we did Keys to the Kingdom last year we went behind the scenes at Splash Mountain and Haunted Mansion. We just rode Jungle Cruise but got our own boat without any wait.

CoP was open on 11/16.

I just came back this afternoon. I don't like the change to Journey Into Imagination. And I really didn't like the new Tiki Room. My dd3 fell asleep during it. I'm not kidding.

Thanks, wdw4us2. That tour is definitely next on my agenda for next time!

Yeah, I don't like the change to Journey Into Imagination either. I felt like I was on an acid trip or something (not that I would know, but I "imagine" that's what it would be like hehe).

The only think I like about the Tiki birds (the old show and the "under new management") are the windows with the thunderstorms.

Also just back, late last night. The crowds were so low 15-19, then they began to swell, especially MK...there is nothing like seeing at noon, Splash was only 15 min! (Think that was mon, the 15th)

I agree about Imagination, did not like the new set up, and the bathrooms def. need some attention.

I plan to post my trip reports soon, just now I have to deal with all this depression of "return blues"....:(
